That is far and away the most pleasing, and most hilariously buried version of Happy Birthday, in the style of Bach! As a Cantata, as though it were a Martin Luther hymn set to accompaniment by Bach on organ!!!! I especially like the modulation into minor, for the Happy birthday dear (******) which was wholly unexpected ! FABULOUS !!! For an entirely different and also very creatively satisfying journey of Variations on Happy Birthday theme, search Nahre Sol. She does almost every composer's style (12?) brilliantly, but her Bach is much more full of Bach's artifice, and technical rhetoric, in the style of his toccatas and fugues, than the gentle sweet reverence for the sonorities of peacefulness in your example. Shine on brightly....

Thanks Geopholus for Your very appreciative, savvy and kind comment, that humbles me to no end. This was a gift for a friend who is an almost pathological Bach fan as i am, and accumulation of years of being in awe and love for Bach´s endless invention, and mystery (and truth) in every note, chord or larger structures of his music. Don´t know what would be life without that. I have to say that, the most important thing to me is to feel and hear this harmonies on an emotional, intuitive level, like a non verbal story or declaration being made.
Yes!, I Know some of the work of Nahre, She is an astounding brilliant musician and she´s produced amazing educational videos, i was amazed by her Bach reverse engineering.
      Thank You!.

@@SergioValenzuela, i'm also busy trying to follow Bach's inspiring lead. I guess i'll be putting up some original works on YT soon. I hope. Here is Nahre Sols, th-cam.com/video/ToO7OXDiV04/w-d-xo.html happy birthdays in the style of 10 composers. i think she far surpasses John Cage , and creates a very Lisztian Piece that is a bit more soulfully appealing to me than most Liszt!

Since you mentioned Martin Luther, Have You read "Music in the Castle of Heaven " ?, by John Eliot Gardiner ?. I can't express enough how delighted i am reading through this wonderfully written text (Gardiner = Genius) about so many historical details of all things surrounding Bach, specially cantantas and his intense life, specially how new evidence and superb research by Gardiner , reveals a far more human and flawed person (in a consoling and beautiful way) than the sanitized idealization of early biographers. Fascinating really.

The value of the works of J.S.Bach is not limited to his compositions. It is the style of his music. You apply here in unique way the power of this style. Thank you for this cordial "greeting card".

The way you were able to keep the notes in each voice consistent “(i.e, 16th in the top voice) and the middle and bottom voices being in a different tempo makes your counterpoint very evident

    • @SergioValenzuela

Thank You Aaron!. Adding to what a fellow composer commented, this elongation of the melody (happy birthday), opens up a kaleidoscopic and fun way to harmonize with streams of 16th notes. Bach is restless in finding new fresh harmonic meaning at every turn through his music, in astonishing ways, such as B flat minor fugue from WTC book II, or contrapunctus XI of the art of the fugue among ...infinite other examples. This contrapuntal settings allows to be able to "say it" harmonically in a different way. Thanks for listening.

@@SergioValenzuela Cantus Firmus is an incredibly fascinating compositional principle
      - especially because the polyphonically played melody in augmentation allows a wealth of harmonizations
      - and this often with motivic processing of motifs from the Cantus Firmus...
It was, of course, already the young J.S.Bach who set the standards for this in his Little Organ Book, but also in the later Schübler-, Kirnberger-,
and ClavierÜbung III chorale arrangements to this day.
I find it all the more gratifying that the compositional examination of these exciting topics does not stop - they have not yet been fully explored...
Bach showed us the depth to be explored.

@@thomasmrf.brunner Thank You for listening and your very knowledgeable comment. It´s always joy to share music with kindred spirits who love and marvel at harmony. I´m not an Organist (wish i was, perhaps is not too late ), but i adored Bach Organ Music from an early age. In relation to your comment, exactly, it´s magical the way in which Bach gives color and meaning to the notes of the cantus firmus as time progreses , to magical effect. "Wachet auf ruft uns die Stimme", the first piece to enter my ears as a kid, made me appreciate this interplay between melody , beautiful bass motions and what the flowing harmony is telling . Don´t know whay would be without Bach. besides are You an Organist ?. Cheers!

I'm not an organist, but I play three of Bach's Cantus Firmus pieces (BWV639 / 675/735) on the piano. My friend Michael Stein was an organist, to whom I posthumously dedicated my own Cantus Firmus composition on "Vom Himmel hoch" - the KorgM1 demo video of it is illustrated with pocket photos from our Switzerland tour and the two-day ascent of Mont Blanc. Cheers.
