Love all of your tutorials, both here on YT and on Skillshare. You do such a good job of breaking it down and making it approachable for a relative beginner! You're talented at both painting and teaching. :) Thanks for the work you do!
Amanda Webster aww thanks so much! I’m also still learning to bring better content for everyone 😊😊😊 I’m so happy you’ve been enjoying the tutorials and classes
So gorgeous and I love your narrative and explanation as to what you’re doing and why. I have loads of color but not rose madder, what is a good substitute? I hope you do more fruits, I love painting them!
No need to use the same colours :) Rose madder and crimson lake is very similar? But you can just use a different type of red as well, the tone of the colour mixture might be a bit different but it's okay :))
I only found your channel yesterday and have only watched two videos so far, including this. I usually use watercolor to color a pencil sketch and I’m so excited to try out your technique. I’m usually intimidated to start painting straight with watercolor but the breakdown you do is very helpful! Thank you for sharing your techniques!!!
Yea I usually do sketches too. But sometimes I like to try to paint without an outline and I feel like it loosens my way of painting which is good practice for me 😊 hope you enjoy painting along!
This is amazing . . I stretched a couple pieces of Strathmore 400 2 days ago and then couldn’t figure out my mojo what I wanted to paint , lol . Now I’m going to grab some pics of our olive tree in the backyard for inspo!! Thanks, subscribed!
So enjoyed this video as I truly learned so much from color mixing to composition. Also very much appreciate the wonderful videography such as the excellent close up visuals to the written notes/visuals along with the verbal cues for colors and the details given during the paintings. Thrilled to have discovered your channel and to learn you are on Skillshare. I will definitely be joining some of your classes.
Aw thats so sweet of you! I'm glad that you're enjoying the tutorials so far. I do try to make shorter lessons on youtube and longer ones on skillshare, so if you're interested for more complex pieces, I have a few classes there, but I'm also trying to include different levels of paintings on my skillshare. Hope to see you there aswell ^_^
This is so beautiful! I love your style and method of teaching. I’m wondering what more do you offer on skillshare? I will surely try to paint this! Thank you!
You cn actually have a look at the list of classes I have there. I mostly do food illustration, but I've made some basic watercolour classes as well. The food illustrations are more of a semi realistic approach so it has more detail. I teach much slower on skillshare and divide the class into shorter lessons, so it's a bit easier to follow.
I really loved it, nowadays l am watching your videos specially ( food illustration tutorials) I tried to make these olive branches and the result was amazing. I want to ask something! ( who is your favorite youtuber)
Very good video, thank you. I often get confused from one instructional video to another from what the instructor says. As examples; some have said put the lighter values in the background to show depth & less in focus and to add more value first going to lighter & the reverse. How do you suggest? Thank you.
This just depends on what's easier for you to work with. With watercolours, it's always easiest to start with lighter colour because it's hard to take off paint once you put it on in comparison to say acrylic and oil which you can just pile any value on top of one another. This means that watercolour would require you to think ahead before painting because it's harder to fix mistakes. However, for me, when I'm painting more complex paintings, it's easier for me to start from base/light colour and rough placement of midtones, then sometimes I go to shadows then go back again to the mid tones. You can do this if you work in sections and think of shadows and highlight more as shapes or silhouettes themselves. This might be a bit confusing but there are several ways to go about this and the more you paint, the more you will be able to recognise the method that you're comfortable with :) Hope this helps...
Lovely demonstration. One quick question - how did you get your paint pallete to not bead in the mixing areas? I just scratched mine with a piece of steel washer but it hasn't worked. Thanks in advance.
I think my palette still beads, but I use my palette and clean it quite often so thats probably why it doesnt bead so badly. To be honest.. I'm nt really bothered by it so.. I never experiment with it but I've heard you can try putting toothpaste and then cleaning it to prep new plastic. But the best option is probably to use a porcelain plate or palette if the beading is really an issue for you 😊
This is so elegant! Absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for sharing!
You are a super teacher, amazing. I love how you explain part by part.
