I was catching those Bob Ross vibes as well. I like it! Considerably peaceful and easy to listen to by comparison with all of the TH-camrs that feel the need to scream at the camera.
This is why I like this channel so much: Mr. Heaton out in the field creating stunning images and wonderful stories around them. Keep up the great work!
I absolutely love this mentality - "My images might be rubbish, this might be rubbish, but I don't care. I'm... right now I'm really in the moment and enjoying it, so... yea. What a beauty." This is what photography should be all about - a way to immerse yourself in the moment and find beauty all around you.
Luke Orwin I think so as well, but there's also the other X-T3 images, not discussed in the video, that are very wave like as well. I'm glad he decided to share them in the video. And the last image had an alien feel to it when I first saw it. I found myself asking if it was really taken on our planet. Keep up the great photography and I look forward to the next video.
For the life of me, I don’t understand why you four, in conditions of high wind or other adverse circumstances, don’t employ the feature in each of your tripods that allows you to further spread and lock the legs for much better stability? With a wider spread, the stability of the camera platform rises exponentially. Maybe a topic for a “lessons learned” video sometime in the future. As always, thank you for an excellent video, not only in photographic creativity, but entertainment value as well. Very much appreciated.
Very impressive images! I have the feeling that the Hasselblad is taking your photography to the next level. I'm following you since several years but hardly saw you so joyful and exited in a long time. Great to watch and looking forward to more! Cheers from Germany
Loving the first and fifth photo. As you said before, it's easy to be overwhelmed by those beautiful scenes, but there are lots of details hiding in plain sight and that's what makes the shot unique and 'of your own'.
I very much liked the direction of your work in this video and encourage your persistence. I have seen the iconic views of Iceland hundreds of times so that they now hold little emotional value nor I believe commercial value. Keep up the good work in search of your unique and satisfying images.
These kinds of videos cannot last me long enough. The texture and the lights in this shot is such an enjoyment to wacht... I think there is room for a second book. Looking forward to the vlog of this sunday!
Great video Thomas, really liked that last photo, loved the soft purple tones. Beautiful! I hope you don’t lose the new found passion for this film photography with the Hasselblad, loving the new journey it is taking you on :-)
Thomas you keep saying I don't know how it will turn up. Man you are a genius and I think you are nailing every shot on Hasselblad.... Amazing love your work..
I want to personally thank you for your videos, especially during this whole covid issue. They remind me that sooner or later, our lives should return to a semblance of normalcy. That there is still beauty and majesty and grace out there, patiently awaiting all of us. This video reminded me of what I call a motophoto trip. My last motophoto chapter involved the usual suspects, my old bike full of decent photo gear, terrible camping gear, and no maps. As I drank my coffee each morning, I drew a crude "X" on the ground with a toe. (points of the X are compass points) Flipped a coin over the X. Where the flipped coin landed determined the direction my travels would take me that day. Spent lots of time on mountain gravel roads, just looking for light and compositions, not aiming for any destination. Eventually found myself 1,700 miles from home at White Sands national park, doing minimalist photography. Anyway, Thank You, Mr. Heaton. You're unconsciously doing nothing less than performing a mental health service for some of us here.
Excellent video Thomas...minimalist is good particularly if your image has the right balance of colour and texture. I liked all of your images particularly the first showing snow on the rocks.
"I like it" you looked like a kid in a candy shop. Brilliant!!! Sorry about Thor's smashed filter but glad it wasn't anyone's camera. Whew. Loved the sky in the last image. After watching your in the field of this trip and seeing Adam and Alister's minimalistic style, I'm quickly becoming a fan.
Very beautiful photographs here. I love the minimalism, it fits you well. And I am very happy you are using film now as well. As I only use film myself, I like to watch your videos now even more than before...
You’ve got me to start and crop some of my images to square; it’s actually amazing how much of a different look it can bring; especially to the high percentage of my photos that I never thought initially worked too well; I can go back and put some life into them and actually use them. Thanks for the tips.
I like the first image as well. The reflected purple-pink light on the snow plays so well off the dirt below it. The Fuji Velvia 50 just magnifies those amazing colors in the second. I can truly see the influence of your peers as well as the effects of using the Hasselblad, on your compositional vision these days. Keep it up, great stuff.
I loved your light in second image of the video. The soft pink reflected the foreground in a strange way. Whilst the film talk loses me at times, I'm new to this, its your approach to the scene and challenge you put upon yourself that I can resonate with. And now I'm beginning to look at potential images with a minimalist viewpoint at times. Great work.
I love the stories about the taking of a photo. When I'm at the Dr office and about to get a blood pressure reading I look at one on my photos and remember the story that was the taking of that picture. My pictures are not like those Mr. Heaton takes, but I imagine that most of us can remember standing behind the camera for a favorite picture, adjust this or guessing that. Every time I watch these episodes my stories are a little better and the Dr is more pleased with my blood pressure. Thanks Thomas! PS. Great pictures this episode.
I've only recently discoverd your channel and I have been binging your vidio's ever since! Love your work and love your video's... thank you for all the inspiration you bring!
The reveal of the detailed texture on that first shot really made it for me. Superb! I also loved the last one on the Provia film. The colours in the sky were also reflecting off the snow, and it almost looks like there's a hole through the hill! I'm really enjoying this trip - thank you :)
For me, the bookends (first and last) gave me goosebumps. I’ve always been attracted to shapes and their interactions and I could look at the sand/ snow shot for hours. The contrasting green and purple hues in the last shot really got to me too. The other pics were just, well, very good! Thanks for another great video
I'm also enjoying your channel, it feels like I'm traveling with you to these exotic locations doing what we all love to do most - find amazing compositions, breath in nature, and challenge ourselves creatively. Thanks Thomas
What a stunning set of images, some of your best yet, there is something refreshing about watching you explore and just enjoy yourself with the film camera. Thanks for bringing us along. Cheers, Duade
The markings on the snow in the first image make it look like water - and this does my head in because there is nowhere for the "water" to "flow"! Great images leave the mind wondering and this is one.
Love the minimalistic s**t and those totally abstract shapes in the landscape that so many people would overlook. Your images seem to be taking on a new dimension Thomas. Excellent!
Love the curves and 8 sorta seconds purple shot on provia. Brave images and strong. Beautiful really deep down in a special way. Great videos. Have to give you a compliment. You are a first class citizen. Saw the video from 2018 where you finish having lunch with pasta and spicy sausage (it was warm food on a cold day). Along the way you picked up trash. You took the time to make that statement. That matters a lot and took me back in time. Here is something a wonderful man taught us in grade school many decades ago. It is about citizenship (and behavior of kids too...): Third class citizen leave trash. Don't be one of those. Second class citizens don't leave trash but don't pick any up - that is most of you. First class citizen don't leave trash - and they pick it up when they see it. Be one of these in your life and it will make the world better. Had to share that. Thanks for sharing your time and thoughts...it is helping me think anew about photography. Your work is magnificent.
Enjoyed it mate, taking pieces out of the landscape is my fave. The style you fellas have of just driving until you see something cool is the way to go. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼📷📷📷
Hi Tom, hope you are enjoying using your Blad, I have had 500C/M since I was a photography student nearly 40 yrs ago, What you need to overcome the issue with using a cable release is an L adapter, there's a few on Ebay. Also, when shooting longer exposures not only do you need to hold the shutter release down long enough to prevent the blinds closing but you should also use the mirror lock ! this will prevent camera shake and hold the blinds open at the same time.. keep on snapping !!
G P Not at all. From Brisbane up the coast to Bowen; west through Winton to Boulia; down to Birdsville; east through Windorah, Quilpie etc on our way back home to Brisbane.
Nice! I’m from Brisbane as well (Shailer Park). Went though central Queensland a couple of years ago. Didn’t find the people of Winton and Longreach very friendly, far from it in fact. At the time, they were in the thick of a nasty drought so I think that this may of played a part. Lark Quarry outside of Winton is good to see. Shame you aren’t going to Longreach because Captain Starlights lookout was a great side trip. Have a good trip.
G P Hello again. I wonder how many other Brisbane people follow Andrew. We have previously been to Lark Quarry and Longreach as part of an 8 week trip a few years ago. Also passed through that area last year as part of circumnavigating Australia.
Absolutely love these intimate abstract shots as opposed to the big landscapes everyone else takes when they go to Iceland. Everyone except Messrs Benn and Gibbs, that is! Like paintings......just my kind of thing. Did you realise that your choice of clothing makes you blend in with the colours of the landscape too? Almost couldn't pick you out from the background at one point! Keep up the great photography!
If there's one thing to take away from this series apart from the enjoyment of seeing some fantastic images is to sometimes go out there and enjoy the experience and not to put pressure on yourself to come back with an image. If that happens then that's a bonus
Hi Thomas, there is an obvious influence of Alister and Adam in this video and it is nice to see that even you, great photographers, can learn from each other! Three friends, three different approaches and I love all of them...and learning a lot definitely! THX!
Hi Thomas. Great video as always. Get yourself a right-angle cable release adapter. They screw into the cable release socket and sends the cable release off at a 90 degree angle.
I like them as well Thomas! Excellent work on minimalist shots! You did great envisioning those shots, I had a hard time figuring out the final picture just by looking at the video before you showed the final picture. I am planning to go out for a small photo walk locally with my friends and this video has inspired me! And, I absolutely agree with the time frame you mentioned about appreciating the photos you took few weeks ago. For some pictures, I need to give at least a week before deciding whether a photo belongs in, "that looks good!", "its redundant" or "its crappy" category. BTW, most belong in the last category and yet it still excites me to look forward to find at least one picture that may belong in the first category.
I love how your style is turning into something like minimalistic, interesting, that made me ask what it that? what is the perspective? and stuff like that, it is soooo interesting!
Really enjoying the hasselblad ventures! I bought one last year and never looked back! My favourite was the Portra shot with the black sand - reminds me a bit of Bruce Percy’s work , love it!
Around 18 years ago, before TH-cam a friend of mine got married and her husband and her went on their honeymoon to Iceland. Everyone thought that was unique, but strange as well. We didn't have as easy of access to gorgeous footage like you are sharing of these amazing vistas. I've had friends visit since then and it definitely is on the short list of places I want to visit when traveling is allowed again.
Brilliant photos Thomas. I love Iceland and you can discover something new just around a corner or waiting for a short while and that opportunity shows itself.. love this series. All the best Graham📷📷📸

That is beautiful. I'm about to go out on my first photography trip inspired by you....all I really expect is to learn a bunch....If I get a shot...so much the better.
I think being sponsored by Squarespace has finally got to him, what with all these square compositions. 😁
Ha. Yes, it's in my contract 😂
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto I knew it!!!
Subliminal messaging :O
He'll be setting his in camera shooting format to square soon. Then doing square panos to create a rectangular image!
Nothing wrong with a man looking after myself :)
this guy has the charm and adventurousness of bear grylls mixed with the personality and attitude of a modern bob ross.. i love it
I'll take it!
I was catching those Bob Ross vibes as well. I like it! Considerably peaceful and easy to listen to by comparison with all of the TH-camrs that feel the need to scream at the camera.
It's always wonderful to see someone who likes to photograph something they see, something that moves "them". Someone who expresses themselves.
This is why I like this channel so much: Mr. Heaton out in the field creating stunning images and wonderful stories around them. Keep up the great work!
The minimalist shot of the curves of the snow, is the best!....for me

This has been a wonderful series: successes, failures, and you, as always, being so open about it all. These images were all gorgeous.
Huge fan of your channel from the start but I have to say with the introduction of film photography you're hitting new heights of awesome epicness.
Those are simply some of your best images ever captured on your videos. Bravo!
For the life of me, I don’t understand why you four, in conditions of high wind or other adverse circumstances, don’t employ the feature in each of your tripods that allows you to further spread and lock the legs for much better stability? Probably some of the best images you’ve ever made Thomas , love them

Wow! Great one Thomas! The final image is my favorite. Congratulations on taking steps to further improve your craft.
I'm also enjoying your channel, it feels like I'm traveling with you to these exotic locations doing what we all love to do most - find amazing compositions, breath in nature, and challenge ourselves creatively. Thanks Thomas
The shot at 17:17 is other worldly. Beautiful.
I love the first pic, you're right about the difference in contrast of colours and weather-beaten snow drift vs coarse dirt/sand
Thanks for being bold enough to experiment
What a stunning set of images, some of your best yet, there is something refreshing about watching you explore and just enjoy yourself with the film camera. Thanks for bringing us along. Cheers, Duade
This was brilliant! I love your turn into minimalism.
First image: LOVE it. best image you've taken for quite a few weeks (my personal opinion :))
The markings on the snow in the first image make it look like water - and this does my head in because there is nowhere for the "water" to "flow"! Great images leave the mind wondering and this is one.
Iceland is such a beautiful place.
Also, I am wondering how the first shot would look in b&w. The texture of the soil looked interesting.
Love the minimalistic s**t and those totally abstract shapes in the landscape that so many people would overlook. Your images seem to be taking on a new dimension Thomas. Excellent!
I think you could point your camera almost anywhere there and get a good photo. Beautiful.
Love the curves and 8 sorta seconds purple shot on provia. Brave images and strong. Beautiful really deep down in a special way.

I love the contrast in texture in that 4:00 image.

That was a lovely video. I really like your abstract work. Thanks Thomas.
Liked the simplicity and the textures in the first shot and I don't know why, but I also liked the last one.
Can`t wait hand printed black and white phototography from our inspirater Thomas Heaton :)

Wonderful images in the continuing beauty of Iceland. Thank you. It is
inspiration for our road trip in Queensland, Australia next week.
If you don’t mind me asking, where in Queensland are you visiting?

Great video Tom and lovely images. Many thanks for sharing and looking forward to your next video.
All fantastic images. I think the third one is my favourite. And I also think the first would have been even more amazing in black and white.

3rd and 4th shots are my favorite.
wonderful photos and really appreciate your honesty and passion for the journey
Great video Thomas. I really enjoy it when you go into a minimalistic frame of mind. Great stuff.
Loving the little stories with each of your videos!

oh man I would be burning to see these photos! Film is for the patient ones! Great video Thomas!
I love how your style is turning into something like minimalistic, interesting, that made me ask what it that? what is the perspective? and stuff like that, it is soooo interesting!
I love the streaky look of the snow. Nice comp.
Really enjoying the hasselblad ventures! I bought one last year and never looked back! My favourite was the Portra shot with the black sand - reminds me a bit of Bruce Percy’s work , love it!
Thanks Thomas, Iceland is amazing! I love the first image, the contrast between the white snow and the gravel is great
One of your better videos... or photos I should say! Love the new simple style and its positive effect on my state of mind ;-)
Awesome abstract shoot Tom !!! I love it 😁 something different ... 👍
Watching how much fun you've been having with the 501cm is making me want to get a medium format film camera now!
Your first image of the snow...I like it as well. Nice one Tom.
In that first image with the XT-3, if I stretch my imagination a bit the snow looks like flowing water. Lovely image!
Brilliant photos Thomas. I love Iceland and you can discover something new just around a corner or waiting for a short while and that opportunity shows itself.. love this series. All the best Graham📷📷📸
I like so much your Hassels . photos, maybe more than the opened landscapes
Loved the first image Thomas, the contrasting textures between the snow and the stones 👌
I love you're enthusiastic way in this. Makes me want to go out
Nicely done Tom, very gentle and moody. I like it!
Jesus spoilt for choice with all these pictures and the length of the vlog 😎 imagines were amazing loved the colours in them and that's coming from someone who is colour blind lol. Looks like such a beautiful and inspiring place to be.
Last photo is amaziiiiiiing!!!!
Normally a big vista fan but enjoying the minimalist pics 👌
Well done Thomas, I really liked the simplicity of the image at 12:56.
Consistently good minimal is FAR harder to perfect and more enjoyable than just grabbing a 16-35 and shooting wide and filling the frame with sky and fg - something I was guilty of for 10 years!
That is beautiful. I'm about to go out on my first photography trip inspired by you....all I really expect is to learn a bunch....If I get a shot...so much the better.
As Alister Benn says, "Be a happy photographer". Rock on!
I have enjoyed your work for years Thomas. Finally ordered your book aswell, looking forward to dive into it.
I love your minimalist sh*t images Tom! 😁 Experimentation is a lot of fun. Thanks for letting us be a part of you trip!
Love the simple detailed image of the ice and rolling mounds of earth. Good eye.
I like it, it looks almost like waves on a beach
Love these images Tom! Thor obviously forgot that if you disparage minimalism, the universe will eat your filters :-)
