    This wreck was important to me in more than one way. I live a couple of miles from Dupont. After the wreck, the rerouting of traffic had the area near my house in total disarray for WEEKS. Had to sit in traffic for 60 minutes or more just to get to the store and back home .... a distance less than 4 miles. It wasn't until a few weeks later that I found out one of my cousins had been in the same car of those 3 people lost their lives. He had been hospitalized for over a week and still has some medical issues 2 years later but is doing a lot better.

    So, they built this all new route, and installed a 30 mph turn, why not bank or make it more subtle of a turn? I am also amazed at the millions spent to shave 10 mins on a line.

    • @bryandamkaer3646
      @bryandamkaer3646 4 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      It would have cost millions more to rework the curve over I-5. The route was put in to take traffic off the the UP/BNSF route plus there’s a restrictive tunnel curving underneath Point Defiance Park.

    • @youngwarrior2
      @youngwarrior2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      According to the NTSB report Sound Transit and WSDOT were given the money by the U.S. Deportment of Transportation to change the curve from 30 mph to 40 or 45 mph. They spent the money elsewhere.

      The video doesn’t make it clear that this so called bypass had been part of the original Seattle-Portland Northern Pacific transcontinental route and contained a sharp climb out of Tacoma, unsuitable for freight and helpers were needed until early 20th century when a single track tunnel at sea level Bypassed it. I'll always remember this wreck. I learned about it right after booking a load for our truck for the 3 hr trip from Seattle to Portland. It ended up taking 8 hrs to get there. The WSDOT detours had wrecks everywhere. Between Google traffic, our truck GPS and my partner's driving skills, we dead reckoned our way around the closure. It was a long miserable day. As soon as we dropped in Portland, the next day, we headed east to LaGrande, OR to rescue the trailer load of hydraulic pumps that were sitting with my partner's disabled tractor. They had to be delivered to TX, and with both of us driving, we managed to deliver on time.

    Retired engineer here (41years of service). Enjoyed your video and commentary on the 2017 Amtrak disaster. Most interesting is that the engineer had only one round trip and conductor was making his 1st trip- that crew was definitely not qualified to make that run!
    I worked in freight service. We had at least 3 qualifying trips at the minimum, and would get an engineer/conductor pilot for areas we were not qualified to operate.
    If I recall correctly, that area of Washington state is also subject to heavy fog conditions as well- perhaps yet another contributing factor for this crew who were not familiar with the physical characteristics of that territory?

    You know.... here's a suggestion for the Point Defiance bypass: Just have freight be on it ONLY, then just keep passenger service on the old route, just so those can see the beauty of Puget Sound during the last lap towards Seattle or points north.

    • @V0latyleUSMC
      @V0latyleUSMC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Couple of issues with that: the Bypass is not double tracked, unlike the freight route that runs along the Sound. Secondly, the Bypass has a steep grade climbing southward out of downtown Tacoma. And third, there are multiple stations along the route used for the Sounder. It just makes more sense for Amtrak to use it. The route isn't the problem; a lack of accountability in Sound Transit and Amtrak is, as well as the fact that they put a complacent and inexperienced engineer behind the throttle.

    • @youngwarrior2
      @youngwarrior2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@V0latyleUSMC I know the engineer. He was neither complacent nor inexperienced. He had only one trip over the line before and had been at the controls of the Charger only one time before. The NTSB exonerated the engineer and put the entire blame on WSDOT, Sounder, and Amtrak.

    • @V0latyleUSMC

      @@youngwarrior2 He WAS inexperienced on that line. I don't know much about driving trains, but I've driven past that bridge enough times to know that you wouldn't want to be going very fast. If he wasn't complacent and experienced, how did he manage to miss both speed limit signs? It's his JOB to know the route and handle the train safely - and he failed at that simple task. Worse, his actions killed three people. WSDOT / Amtrak / Sound Transit weren't driving the train - HE was.

      @@V0latyleUSMC Your response shows how little you know about trains, the route, or anything else regarding the crash. If he had refused he would have been fired. He had no experience in that locomotive. It was night. The restriction sign is all but invisible at night. The sign is two miles before the curve. Passenger trains don't have to slow down that far back. When he went past the sign he had a warning alarm in the cab that sounded exactly like the alerter but it wasn't. All training, only two trips, had been at night. No indicators as to exact location are visible at night. I know freight engineers who run that route. They also say, along with the NTSB, it wasn't the engineers fault. I suggest you read the report before you sound anymore foolish than you already do.

    I live not far from Dupont and seeing this happen was a nightmare. I watched it on the news in the morning when it happened. I remember my dad having to go to Tacoma to get to work, and you have to pass under that bridge to get there. When he came back, he said that he had to wait about an hour and a half just to get through twice. Whenever we drive by it now, I can see the new parts and paint of the bridge, as well as the new signal and railing there. It still haunts me to this day.

    Just a few months after this incident, an Amtrak train derailed a few miles away. A train failed to slow down to the 40 mph speed limit while approaching the Chambers Bay drawbridge. The excessive speed activated a derail switch that’s designed to avoid a catastrophe if the drawbridge is open as a train approaches.

    To those questioning the engineering behind the “new line”: The bridge & right of way were already there from Northern Pacific Railway days. Sound Transit only just updated it. It was highly recommended in the surveying (& WSDOT’s insistence) to replace the bridge & straighten the curve for higher speeds, but it would add about $230 million to the bill. The higher ups chose not to replace that section. They have since added PTC to the line, but Amtrak service hasn’t returned as of yet.

    As a retired railroad conductor, it shouldn't have mattered if they had or not had PTC in activation. Train crew members receive train orders when they go on duty. Speed restrictions are listed in these orders. Crew member should always be aware of where they are and also know the signal indications as they pass each signal; which are normally two miles apart. This was operator failure of the crew. Especially the locomotive engineer and the conductor. The train and engine crews are employees of the rail line they are on. BNSF, Santa Fe, Union Pacific, etc. Porters, waiters and such are Amtrak employees.

    I put some blame on the Talgo VI set too, due to the heavy and slow reactionary nature of Pendulum Tilt systems, with such unsprung mass, playing a role in sending the articulated cars in the directions they went. On the most modern Japanese passenger trains, they use GPS & Track Profile-synced Air Suspension, which reduces unsprung weight. While Talgo was impressed with how the set performed, it was never designed for that bypass route in-mind.
    I get flack for this view, but I postulate that less unsprung weight, would have been better in terms of derailment and survivability.
