PMDG 737-700 for MSFS - Tutorial: VOR Approach

  • Hi all, I'm a PMDG tech team member and real life 737 pilot. Here is my next video in the 737 tutorial series.
    In this tutorial I will show you how to fly an RNAV approach using LNAV and VNAV.
    The video has been taken using a pre-release beta version of the product, so you can expect to see some issues that will be fixed before release. There's no need to point those out as the team will be aware and working on them already. For example the trim sound is not yet implemented.
    If you like my videos please consider a small donation as it's taking a lot of time and effort to create these.

    And if you really love the videos, consider becoming a Patron:

    These tutorials are not designed as absolute beginner tutorials. It is expected that the viewer already has basic experience with airliners and knows the basics how to operate an aircraft.
    Instead these tutorials will focus on the 737NG as an aircraft and the particularities of how to operate it.
    I'll be closing this introduction by saying that I'm not a professional TH-camr or Streamer quite yet and these videos are my very first that actually get more than a hundret clicks. I have never before created such content so bear with me for doing beginner mistakes.
    I record straight from the sim without any fancy stuff going on in the background.
    Tools and addons used in this video:

    Excellent MOI! As a retired Army pilot and rotary commercial ticket holder, I still love flying instruments, and like all fellow aviators we always look for the edge to make us better. Your tutorial was informative and concise that it does not trip the snooze alert! Look forward to watching your other vids!

    One question: At 02:18 in the video you explain the inbound track with the glidepath GP at 2.90 deg. Is this a parameter that is retrieved from the NAVDATA database? And is automatically populated when you choose the VOR approach on the DEP/ARR page?

    Hi there, I'm not sure if this is the right place to raise this, but I am actually going on holiday to Kos next week so I thought I'd try a flight there in the simulator. All went very well until I go about 30 minutes out from landing and then I had an oil pressure warning followed by an engine failure. I didn't really know what to do. I checked for failures via the FMC and there were none enabled. I was pretty sick having just flown for three and a half hours! Can anyone explain this as I never even got to try out the VOR approach, lol?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Kyle,
      no it doesn't. The pilot has to tune them him/herself.

    Hello, in case of VOR DME approach instead of VOR approach, can you use also LNAV/VNAV - APP approach or you have to descent via ft/per min ?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  ปีที่แล้ว

      VOR and VOR/DME approaches are exactly the same in terms of SOPs.
      I wouldn't know of ANY VOR only approach however nowadays....

  • @somil07
    @somil07 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I do VOR-DME approaches by just tuning in VOR frequency (not CRS) and pressing the APP button, works just like an RNAV approach with FAC and G/P guidance. What's the difference?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      you’re using IAN mode which got some advantages but also some disadvantages. For example if you wanted to do a circling approach it would not hold the altitude. More on that in future videos.

    Do you have tips as to what visual point of reference to use during landing? The hardest part of a VOR is the very end, no guidance whatsoever, and I tend to stay too high and then have to dive steeply. It's a pain.

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In the real world I would have said use the PAPIs until approx 200ft, then just maintain the rate of descent until 50ft above the runway where you transition the look towards the runway end and flare it with the help of the rad alt.
      In the sim due to the lack of proper functioning PAPIs... you need to transition a bit earlier, when exactly is hard to say though as the inaccuracy of the PAPI is different per airport.

  • @skogis06
    @skogis06 ปีที่แล้ว

    I struggle to understand how to get the correct lateral guidance with VOR approaches in 737.
    With G1000 you have a clear indications when you are drifting of the radial, but what are you supposed to be looking at when flying VOR approaches raw data?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd recommend to use the VOR mode of your ND and then monitor the deviation. You still got the track line showing you where you are going and if you're following the radial or drifting, that's a very good tool to use.

    Sir, Student pilot here, really want to fly thr 737 and will go for TR next year JanUARY.i am just trying to prepare in advance. SO i hope ,you help me out.
    Question 1 at 2:27...
    Do we need to fill in the CDU with vor approach details,such as distances, slope etc? or does this come preloaded in the CDU/fmc.?
    If yes, then how do we feed this data such as slopes
    2 . Flying vor which are located on the centerline...non-offset...does anything change?
    3. I KNOW you said vor/loc is just for localiser only but then why does it have the word "vor" in it ?Can you please do this with VOR/loc Mode? Do we descent with vs or do we have any other option. PLEASE please do a vor/loc video.We Need more clarity on Vor appoaches and radial interceptions from you. I DONT trust the others.

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because the function *can* track VORs. Which doesn't mean we have to use it for it, right?
      Let's say you loose RNAV capability, then you'd still use the VOR/LOC function for conventional navigation, including tracking of VORs.

    Why the difference in N1 on engines?

    • @A330Driver
      @A330Driver  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Something many will notice when they start using multiple thrust levers is how hard it actually is to set both engines to exactly the same N1.
      Carry this forward to real world where the two engines not only have to be set seperately, but also by sensors of different quality and on non FADEC controlled engines even the difference in the two engines themselves and you end up with thrust settings almost never being identical on both sides.

    There's something i don't understand if anyone can answer it. Is it better to manual set your speed in the autopilot during the approach or should you let the fmc handle it? I've had times where the ap has switched from vnav to manual speed entry and lvl change. I think the pfd also said 'retard'? What's going on? Did my airspeed drop too low and if it did, why? I'm using pmdg's 737. Also has happened on an ils approach. I set the alt to the alt I'm planning to disable the ap at, but i generally don't set the minimums.
