I was lucky enough to go to czech republic 2 years ago while studying a month abroad and we had with the class a visit to the Petrof piano factory. I am still quite an amateur but I guarantee the touch and sound of the expensive pianos that they sell there was absolutely divine. I think it would be definitely worth it if you invested just a hundred or two into a synth with keys that feels more accurate to the real thing. At home I have a DP-95 that my mother plays too. If you want something more portable maybe something with less keys that you can then shove into a bag of its size could do (I started practicing with an MPK 249 and it was enough to play some C418 songs). Anyways since you've thrown so much of your time into programming audio related stuff I refuse to believe you're gonna drop the keyboard for good. Synthesizing sound is also very satisfying when plugging a keyboard in so maybe you can try that too.
About school music teaching nowadays the standard is having every student buy a recorder which is relatively cheap. It's definitely not fit for everyone but it seems at least better than tapping on a flat surface making no sound...
I hope you can commit at least a bit to perform some music because the result is well worth the journey !

Thanks! I enjoy the opening song to Minecraft, so I may try some of C418’s songs. I’m planning to invest maybe $1,000 or so in a piano - and weighted keys with dynamics is absolutely something I’m looking for as well as a better instrument bank. I’m not sure about the size of the DP-95… I think I’m leaning towards the keyboards alone, and buying pedals as an attachment. I have access to two upright pianos in town, so I have a place to practice with real pianos. The little device in the top right corner is a synthesizer, sampler, and drum machine called an OP-1 by Teenage Engineering. I have scheduled a trial session with a tutor in town this Friday. Cost is more reasonable than I had thought for weekly classes - maybe because I’m in a rural area. If everything works out, I may have weekly classes to help improve my skills.

Update. I purchased the Roland 30X. It arrives Thursday if weather doesn’t get in the way.

    The key noise is unbearable

Agreed! You can use headphones, but I’m starting to get used to it. With the MIDI hookup over USB, my iPad is much louder than the keys.
