Just wanted to add a quick note for anyone about to check out Kind Words themselves. As one of our patrons mentioned on the PMG Discord (thanks AtFRuitBat!), some requests do come from people that are struggling with things you may well find distressing. I have seen a letter written by someone considering self harm, for example, and although the game does allow you to flag messages like this with the developers (who then pass on a list of resources to that person), it can be difficult to read. As AtFruitBat recomends: "It's probably best to read & reply to letters when you are in a solid place".
This is the second PMG video I've watched, and it's the second time today I've felt an intense warmth and hopefulness. Very well done videos that are super interesting. Thank you.
That's a very good summation of social media right now. It's true that Kind Words offers something different. The video got me reflecting on it more, and I think some of that is also the pace of Kind Words - you only have so many requests to read through at a time. Paper airplanes with nice words float by slowly and randomly. It's very different from the way Twitter can go by quite fast when there's many anxious people online - and right now most people are naturally anxious about things. Thanks for the video, and also for the comment talking about the one caveat I have about the game.
I love the idea for this game, but man, it can be tough to read those requests. There's a lot of raw hurt. I know it's not exactly healthy, but I usually have to be at least somewhat drunk to boot it up.
I'm pretty sure that most users are askers or repliers and not both, those that do both probably don't send such heavy asks, and those that do neither don't have the game.
i think if you are sure you never get irresponsible when your drunk, which is true for a lot of people, then it could be somewhat wholesome. i know many people who have very nice drunk personalities, and maybe that could be what people need. i certainly know how heavy some feels can be to read. so if you can provide help in any way you can while keeping mentally healthy, i appreciate that. and if you get too drunk, it seems like the moderation team has you at least a little covered ^-^
Thanks for sharing. I'm feeling a bit "left out" at the moment, unable to afford to get the switch and animal crossing, unable to overcome anxieties about joining group chats, unable to use social media because of the constant comparisons your brain often can't help but make ("Look how creative that person is being, look how they're self-improving so much during their isolation..").. daft stuff you know! I think I could probably just about justify the cost of this, what a great game to introduce and support.
Holly Grant sounds like you’ve got a very good perspective on what’s going on. I think a lot of people don’t realise how much of social media is merely people looking for validation and trying to make others feel bad by comparison.
I think the lack of reaction stuff is probably a large part of what keeps trolls away (and having to buy it doesn't hurt either). They do the trolling to get a reaction out of people, & if one isn't forthcoming then they get bored & stop. There is also definitely something different about making a thing (anything) inherently positive in a way that builds it into the thing, & that firstly attracts the right kind of customer, which in turn builds a community of a certain type, which in turn makes it harder to corrupt in any widespread kind of way. Trolling only becomes an issue if a troll can generate a snowball effect with what they do or say, pulling increasing numbers of people into it & forcing reactions out of them. Nip that in the bud instead & it simply doesn't work as a use of the troll's time.
Glad to see this game getting more attention. Ive had it for a couple months and has helped through tough times, great video as always! A much needed one in these tough times
Thank you for bringing this "game" to my attention. I can actually run this on my crappy, old MacBook Air and it feels great to spread some, well, kindness right now.
This video warmed up my Friday and gave me a little dose of hope amongst the gloom of my timeline right now. Thanks for making this, stay safe and rested everyone at PMG.
Thanks for this recommendation, I’ve spent the past few hours writing on paper planes and responding to people that need someone. I appreciate this a lot man
Everything he said holds true for real social media. You can step away from all of it if it gets too heavy. The only person that gives any value, merit, worth, etc to social media is you, the user.
Kind Words has helped me get through some really difficult and lonely times over the past year, including a breakup that stressed me out so much I needed to seek medical care. I'm very grateful for this game. 💜
I've actually been thinking about picking up this game ever since I saw it got nominated for a Games With Impact at the game awards. Thank you for reminding me of Kind Words. I think I'm going to pick it up later today. It could help me a lot and hey I could help someone else too.
This game... helps me so much. And I love sharing positivity with everyone. This game makes me tear up with happiness at times, When I really need something good in my life, I open Kind Words and I have all the good I can handle.
Gosh I can’t believe it’s been two years now. I’m just watching this video for the first time, and it’s wild how much things have changed and yet I still can’t just go out and seek out my friends for irl support. We still have to be careful and heavily restricted to stay safe. I’m excited to buy this and play it now.
Kind words has helped me through a lot of stuff, although I rarely make requests and mostly answer. It feels positive to be able to reach out to someone and hopefully help them. It can be hard, and you can feel helpless sometimes, but it's mostly a quiet good place of helping and sending so much love to strangers
I just tried it and sent several replies. I'll admit that it felt very good to try to cheer people up, give them advice, and help them with their problems. I even got a sticker soon after. There's just two problems with this: (1) I might get addicted to it (it was hard to exit so that I could get back to what I was doing), and (2) It's making me fail hard at being a misanthrope. :-|
Thank you for sharing this. I often find myself wanting to express a thought, but find myself hesitating because it's not a good time to do so or I'm worried about bothering people (like in the middle of the night - I have a terrible sleep cycle). This game feels almost like it was made specifically to fit that need.
Thanks for this recommendation. I don't know that I could handle the requests I'd receive in the game but, knowing there is such a beautiful way to reach out ad seek, or offer, support is really special. Thank you for taking care of yourself at the moment too.
The first time I heard about this game, I fell in love with it, but was somewhat disappointed to find that it's not free. I have come around somewhat on that sentiment on the basis of thinking that it really might be working as a deterrent to trolls. It's definetly still on my list to pick up sometime
Game development is hard work, so why should the game be free? Are you not willing to pay for something you ‘fell in love with’? It’s not expensive, and It would be horrible to have advertisements in this game.
Thank you for posting this video. I downloaded Steam and subsequently got the game. Yes, there are some people posting problems that should be referred to a therapist. Having been a social worker in a previous life, I have a hard time skipping these letters, but I guess it is the best thing to refer them. However this can be tricky in these times were many people are in lock down. However, I am glad that I purchased the game. It gives me a sense of purpose to be of help in these times.
i made a comment yesterday when i found this video, but i'm commenting today because i went and bought the game in a particularly aimless moment and i don't regret it at all. it's so incredibly fulfilling and has been filling the void in my chest today. thank you so much for sharing about this game!
Kind Words is amazing. I've been using it daily every day this year and its been super wholesome. That said - I will reiterate the pinned comment - it can be quite triggering... so tread carefully.
Really brilliant video, Chris, sending you a socially-distant hug/highfive. For those reading the comments and also wondering about how to deal with Twitter, I've found it helpful to put words like Coronavirus, Covid19, death and the like into my Muted Words list (on the web, go to More, Settings and Privacy, Content Preferences, Muted, Muted Words). Then I can get the dog and cat pics and chats with friends, and mainly control my viewing of the news when I want to, as WHO etc advises.
i absolutely love the analogy of honey traps. sucks how many things today are like that. [rant] the monetary schemes of mmos like wizard101 have been on my nerves recently, sucking you in with a solid early-game but succumbing quickly to lazy design propelled by shit like targeting families with phrases like “kid friendly” to mask the manipulative practices used to encourage spending relentlessly throughout a minimum 140h play through, as well as “optional” grinding making it so the amount of time you have to spend to avoid spending is astronomically higher than the money required to skip it, so much so that you’ll eventually succumb to the smaller transactions and easily spend as hundreds of dollars on “minor transactions” just while playing through the intended story. shit pisses me off but i keep coming back to it. just another example of entertainment acting as a manipulative boyfriend, I guess. a video on the business models of manipulative mmos might be illuminating, but you don’t have to be the one that makes it. good video, interesting topic. relatable subject matter beyond just saying “COVID bad,” for me at least. hope I can help in some minuscule part in boosting this channel a little.
I love this game so much and totally forgot I owned it, thanks for giving it a well-deserved spotlight. I’m so glad it’s still a place for earnest interactions, that clip discussing their mod system is fascinating.
I feel like a gofundme should be created to give the developers all the support they need to make this game free and accessible to as many people as possible.
Making it free might offset the atmosphere of the community. I feel that the people who actively purchase it really want to partake in the nice environment
Is it truly anonymous though? Sure, it might be to other users, but what about the developers? Their's so much scrubbing apps can do on Android/IOS right now, they don't really need your name, they can get a crap load of information from other apps you use. Not to mention all the other vulnerabilities in the Android/IOS ecosystems.
Exactly. I sure wouldn't use something where anonymity is out of my control (and can be circumvented by the devs as said in this video) for something supposed to share my inner feelings.
This is a lovely video for a lovely game/platform. Thank you for being a voice of reason and saying what we are feeling. I am trying to disengage from social media, but in those down moments find myself there again on my phone. I love the idea of this game/platform, just gutted its not a phone app, its the kind of thing you need when you are trying to sleep and your brain wont let go of your worries and so you reach for your phone and find yourself on social media yet again! I never comment on videos and I mean ever, but I wanted to support this video so am tentatively sticking my head over the parapet.
I'm kinda off in social media like Twitter and more bcz I'm rlly tired my brain is going to exploded watching news about making me rlly rlly sick of it I'm almost get a headache , I'm happy hanging with my young siblings talking and playing together my massage hope y'all stay safe talk with siblings bcz never regret about tell mom how you love ~v~.
It's a shame that all I have in my bank account right now is 0,65 Cents, this game seems like it would really take a toll off my heart as I've dealt with clinical depression for a long time, i think i might even help some people, maybe. If the developers are listening, I know the game is already very cheap, but could you please put it on a considerable sale? Just so I could borrow some money from friends and pay for it. Thanks.
This game would be a lot more fun if you could make friends with people and talk to them again. Anonymous charity is cool and all.. but the world is already isolated enough without games forcing the idea. You could make it opt-in for both parties, on a per-engagement level, so that people can still share anonymously and feel safe with not revealing themselves until they find someone worth having a deeper conversation with.
What I'm interested in: Why is this a game and not a website? Is that an active design decision? As far as I can tell the fact that it's a game adds little to the experience but that's just me, maybe for others the 3d renders help.. somehow? Idk. And while devleopers should get paid for their work something about it being a paid product makes me uncomfortable. "We're here to help you!................. for only 5.99" Or maybe that's just because I only have £6.82 to my name.
The definition of videogame is nebulous and continually expanding, and a discussion about that is probably what you're really looking for. That being said in the case of this particular game if we want to go by an insanely strict definition of a game (a set of rules that outlines a challenge at which one can succeed or fail). Each incoming request could be seen as a challenge to make the sender of the request feel better, and the stickers you receive as a thank you count as a success not receiving a sticker could count as a failure. This doesn't work as an anonymous chat since you cannot carry on a conversation. As you can not respond to responses or send to a specific individual.
Downloading it first thing in the morning. My mom died a week or so ago, and we haven’t been able to have services for her due to the virus, and I could absolutely use some kind words. Also, writing responses sounds extremely therapeutic. Thank you!
I used to have an app which you could use to send anonymous photos. Not as many dicks as you might imagine, and was in fact a really interesting way to use tech imo. Can't for the life of me remember what it's called but would love to know, or if there's something similar...
But it comes from China. Its not racist. I'm glad you're doing the right thing with switching off from Social media. At the moment it just seems like hysteria. It is a worrying, even scary time but we are all powerless. Reading other people getting stressed and further videos/posts that show how bad people are isn't helping us. I'm glad that you have found a game/community that can help you through this time :)
Hi, 2024 here, Covid is still around, we just ignore it. We were told to die for the economy, many many did, and yet the economy is still crashing, prices skyrocketing. Everything is shit and only getting worse 👍
Just wanted to add a quick note for anyone about to check out Kind Words themselves. Such an underrated channel, keep it up!
Thanks for the heads up. I'm considering buying the game myself and it's good to go into this experience with that knowledge.
How do you know it’s real people and not boys pretending to be real? I want to download it but I’m skeptical the company may be lying
the creator dealing with trolls is the most wholesome thing I've heard all week
Indeed, that and the messages from Kind Words 😄
I was fine on Twitter until the celebrities started singing, that was just a step too far.
Mr Tom FTW those brave millionaires in their mansions really care about us little people!
Social media confirmed to me what I always knew in my heart of hearts, and that is that Britney Spears is the only valid celebrity
lol

I'm pretty sure that most users are askers or repliers and not both, those that do both probably don't send such heavy asks, and those that do neither don't have the game.

Hey I hope you're feeling better now :) sending kind thoughts to you!

I learned about this game recently and it really spoke to me, I’m so glad other people are talking about it and hearing your thoughts made me happy
Logan Zimmermann honestly this game gives me hope for the future. I hope it really takes off in this current climate, and helps a lot of people.
Thanks for this recommendation, I’ve spent the past few hours writing on paper planes and responding to people that need someone. I appreciate this a lot man

This video helped me. Also I admire your ability to water all those plants.
This was a really nice and sweet video. You dealt with some sensitive topics in a really positive way , You should be proud of this one
Cheers for bringing this to my attention Chris. I may or may not have a peek, but it's really interesting to know that it's out there.
Be nice, be sensible & be safe
Y'know, now that I have a functional PC again, I might be well off to finally try this game.

Man... I love this channel. Fantastic work as always. Beautiful stuff. :) Thank you.
WOW, I didn’t know this game existed! Found your channel far too late, been binging the entire channel all week.
Amazing work. 🙏

More recommendations. I bought two copies for my friend and myself.
Happy to see more people getting to know what Kind Words is!
Well. I cried
A regrettably timeless video
Thanks for this video! Will be checking this out later!
Gave this a shot and its lovely. When you get your first 'thanks' message for sending something to someone else it feels so good!
The trolls are probably sad, but bringing down people who are already down is kinda bad
when the steam review graph shows all blue, you know it's good
man, it's insane what people do when given anonymity.
Thank you Chris. We appreciate this. I hope all of this awfulness is going to bring out more altruism in people in the UK in general. Take care.
I'd like to add that Kind Words lead dev is a really cool person, and quite active on his Discord
Unrelated but... What kind of bass have you got there? Do you play a lot?
Wonderful video, wonderful game, have a great day!
It's actually Anni's, but we added it into the shot to make me look more interesting (and IT WORKED). Apparently it's a Dimavery acoustic bass! -Chris
Nice too see i wasnt the only one looking at the bass!
I have never bought a game this quickly! And it's absolutely amazing
read the title as "code" and was like oh sweet this and then it turned out to be cope and this was a bigger bonus
i absolutely love the analogy of honey traps. sucks how many things today are like that.

What is the American dollar equivalent to a "quid?"

Downloading it first thing in the morning. My mom died a week or so ago, and we haven’t been able to have services for her due to the virus, and I could absolutely use some kind words. Also, writing responses sounds extremely therapeutic. Thank you!

4 million thumbs up if I could.
If I wasn't a minor without money i would have bought this game
I used to have an app which you could use to send anonymous photos. Not as many dicks as you might imagine, and was in fact a really interesting way to use tech imo. Can't for the life of me remember what it's called but would love to know, or if there's something similar...
I love you babe!

@@Alex-if1nf nice! just goes to prove Trump's point
Hi, 2024 here, Covid is still around, we just ignore it. We were told to die for the economy, many many did, and yet the economy is still crashing, prices skyrocketing. Everything is shit and only getting worse 👍
I like twittr, but only to see animations or illustrations
