What a Unique way of talking about visiting the mound. When I was pitching in High school my catcher would go up to me in crucial moments I always respected him he was amazing he never let a ball get past him. He always lightened my mood and or either told me straight. He was always such a big presence. He made the best out of me even when I was struggling he would lift me back up and put me in the best mood. I would always get stressed out and get angry over a misplay. But with a little talk and when he hit his mitt on my chest. I could feel his passion and condolences. He was my favorite catcher.
A pitcher/catcher relationship never gets shook off. That's the whole point. As you stated, communication is key. Never seen a shake off in no hitters or perfect games.
Had a coach try to call pitches for me my senior year of high school, and told him I’d try it for an inning and let him know after that. Only lasted one batter and I called my catcher out to tell him not to listen to the coach’s signals and I’d talk to him after the inning. It just messed up my whole tempo and didn’t go with the way I like to pitch. He never tried again with any other pitcher on the team because I stood up for our catcher because he had a great feel for our pitchers and the game
Great clip coach. Catcher and pitcher relationship is so important. Knowing my catcher was a brick wall back there, called a great game, and took control when things were not going well settled not just me as a pitcher but the whole team. Not trying to pimp this book but it’s an easy read and the info is top notch. A book co-written by Jason Kendall and Lee Judge called Throwback.
Great videos you have. Learning baseball. I do not play and did not grow up with the sport here in Sweden. Here soccer and ice hickey is king. I like it a lot and your videos are great to get an understanding for the game.
i remember there were comments i read in the past before, there was some clips of movies ive seen before, where for a pitcher thats green and wet behind their ears, they should always listen to the catcher no matter wat. im glad that u said that its the pitchers ERA thats on the line, the pitchers FIP and watever metrics for a pitchers performance in game thats on the line and not the catchers performance thats on the line. ive always thought its ridiculous for the pitcher to always listen to the catcher where the catcher is always the master of the game.
Hey Dan. My travel team recently got new coaches and I was wondering what is the best way to stand out defensively as a catcher(besides the obvious blocking, making good throws, etc.) but like relating to this video and how to get coaches to notice that I call a good game.
This helps me cause I try to help my pictures but I feel like they don't take my advice cuz I'm doing it wrong but now I know how to do it right thanks
The funniest thing is I never saw a coach or a catcher visit the mound when my kid was pitching. I think they were hoping just to keep it going. On occasion a coach would go out to the mound and call in the infield. I think it was mainly to cuss out the fielding and threaten to take him off the mound if they did not buck up. Its funny, it really did not phase the kid what happened behind him. He just had that innate ability whatever it was. I think its cause he had a natural lazy streak and a crazy ability to hyper-focus. He just figured the minimal path to get the out and delivered. Once or twice the crazy kid just quietly called time and pulled himself. Funniest damn thing I ever witnessed.
Hey coach I’m and 8th grader going to highschool in the begging of the year I was throwing low 80’s now I’m throwing low 70’s I tried to change my pitching mechanics now I can’t fix them do you think you can help me
Great video thanks for all the advice, so I had a pitcher last year who on random days his 4 seam just wouldnt work so I would offer a 2 seam hoping that would help and he always shook me off is that just something I need to talk to him after the inning or what's your thought on that?
Ask him about both. If he doesn’t want to throw a two seamer then he shouldn’t. Also I’m not sure how a 4-seamer can “not work” but regardless, just ask him. Talk about it
My 12u team has played 4 tournaments this season (and a bunch of scrimmages) we're the only team where the kids are calling the game. It is ridiculous. The illusion of control for the adults at the cost of the kids learning the game.
💯. The idea that most of these dad coaches know better is ridiculous. People preach “failure is the best teacher!” Then refuse to let kids take the wheel and call their own game. Hypocrites
@@DanBlewett It also takes away from the experience for the kids. When a pitcher is getting shelled, and there's an absolute merry-go-round on the bases, the catcher should feel responsible. When the coach is calling the game, he just glazes over back there. "Sucks for you pal, glad I'm not on the bump out there." It's not a battery in the same way when the coach calls the game.

When I was younger, I went to a college pitching camp. It made me a much better high school catcher the more I understood the other side

Yep I was the same way. My catcher was so good with the feel of the game, situation, and what he saw going on.
