Wow, funny you should say that! Twenty years ago, I wrote a short story called BEYOND THE PLANET OF THE APES. It was like an Apes The Next Generation type of story, set 1,000 years after the very first 1968 film. Unfortunately it got lost over the years. I was discouraged from publishing it because back then I was told that Planet of the Apes was a "dead" franchise, and like an idiot, I listened. Perhaps I should try again.

The planet of the apes trilogy is so important to me. Those movies changed me. That feeling you get when you realize the director expanding upon something you love so much actually respects and cares and is passionate about what came before is unmatched. I was sceptical at first, but after seeing all those teasers and trailers and interviews with Wes and Owen and Kevin and the rest cast I started to believe this would actually be a great film. Saw the film opening day. I enjoyed it a lot. I think I partially over-hyped myself. I was just a little let down but that wasn't because the film was low quality. I just was thinking it would be a larger-scale story and the story ended up being smaller with less stakes. Which is fine, Rise had relatively small stakes. My main issue was Proximus. He was fantastic in all of his scenes ... it was just that he didn't have enough scenes.

Excited to see it in a few hours! One question, which previous entry in the franchise do you think Kingdom is most reminiscent of (in terms of vibe and plot), or is this something entirely new for you?
Just saw the movie. I LOVED IT!!! Noah was great. Raka was also great. The baby doll saying "mama" like the original Planet of the Apes gave me goosebumps. Can't wait for the next one.
I’m so excited to see this wasn’t hyped to see it a few months back until I saw the trailer in theaters and it looked awesome in fact I was so excited I even drew some of the characters for this new movie
Saw it last night. Really enjoyed it. Hope we get more. I was surprised how much it connected with the previous 3 films, I thought maybe they wouldn't so much.
Loved the movie. Definitely felt like a part 1, but that’s fine. Loved the world building, the characters, and the slower pace (which I know lots didn’t like). Some complained about the ending, but I liked it. Left lots of questions. As a part 1 should… I had one gripe with the movie. SPOILERS: Maybe a nitpick, but it was kinda obvious Raka didn’t die. And I felt that Proximus’s “death” was ambiguous. Strong possibility they are both still alive. While I’d be happy if they both live. I won’t be thrilled if we get two fake out deaths I guess? Or I could totally be wrong and they could be gone
Visuals are Amazing.. The themes are powerful… 9/10. If i have any complaints, it’s just a bit too long(i would watch it a 2nd time in theatres if it was a bit shorter), and to me.. i kind of confused Suna and his mom at times they looked too similar in the dark, and I would’ve liked them to incorporate some kind of Moral Goodness or Caesar wisdom in Noah’s final moments, and to also honor Raka… like for Noah to not just understand the truth about the Past, but to also take from Caesar’s Moral Compass to further his own Character growth. …like when May was choking out Trevathan.. i would’ve like for Noah to have maybe said something to show that Raka had an impact with his teachings… “Show Humans Compassion”, “Apes and Humans once lived side by side”.. some kind of moral growth. But other than that.. i did Love Noah, his own moments of self-reflection.. thinking he was a failure.. he managing to save everyone and master the bird technique which was the coolest scene, just Amaazing. Maybe in the next films, he will show more… Phenomenal Movie👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I'm happy that you enjoyed it! Your interview with Wes was a really good one! I read a lot of comments about the movies and overall, there is more positive than negative, so its a good for the movie franchise (and for Wes). Still, i find it strange when a movie hit a middle spot like 3/5 or 3.5/5 or the review from Jeremy Jahns. But as i see this, the movie have so many things that play against it in the first place. I don't want to write them all but first, Mat Reeves have been put so high and Wes is so underrated. Secondly, the mind set of people. Expect to much or doesn't care at all with a "meh" attitude but go see the movie despite it. Thirdly, people having problems with longer movies. That said, i'm sure i will have some issues (i even had some with Reeves version) but from the trailers and clips i have seen, it look like a very well done movie (above the average blockbuster) with good characters and storytelling. Further more, i am in for a more conventional hero journey adventure tone and less heavy than the trilogy before it. I will see it as an new introduction in a certain time frame for the Apes verse. Even Wes told that if they are making 2 more movies for Noah trilogy, it will get better, bigger and more thought provoking. So Kingdom is not the definitive movie for this new trilogy. Finally i would say that i like Wes and he is the kind of director that have an enthusiasm and optimism that reflect in what he does and it get me. He's not there to be super edgy or dark or for the shocking value but he want to tell good story with a good visual. Personally, i think that we will see him shine even more with Zelda. Wes have the fantasy DNA all over him and Zelda will be is first real entry into high fantasy. He will impress!
@@Ape-Nation and thank you as well my good man. I’m making my way through your videos now watching your Escape review. I have always loved these movies. Even the Tim Burton one. Watched it tonight and i really enjoyed it. I think the worst people are gonna feel about it is that it's just ok but I believe the story is heading in an interesting enough direction, the sequel will boost how people feel about this film down the line. One of my favorite lines in the film is "shit." You'll know when you know
Great review, one of my fears realized from watching even the most recent trailers is that the visuals wouldn't be as good as the war of the planet of the apes, wondering if the budget was smaller, etc. Other than that, it sounds great
The visuals are still incredible for sure, War is just on a whole different level than pretty much all other movies. Also this movie had to use its budget for more CGI environments and wayyy more apes than the other movies.
Sucks I gotta wait till Sunday. Looking forward to your spoiler review. I bet you'll see it 2 more times till then. I know this is definitely a multiple theater experience for me.
A good film that’s for sure. On par with Rise in its own right. I can understand why it’s called Kingdom, there’s 3 kingdoms that we know of for 3 leads (Proximus, Mae and Noa). There’s 1 or 2 scenes in the film that do lead down the ‘Astronaut’ line. It’s a film that gets you thinking for the future. The ending for me is incredibly well done. Mae is a sacrificial character with martyr like motives. Wants to trust but is dedicated to her mission. The last 3 minutes just opens it up for the next one and what will possibly happen. I think Proximus served his purpose, an ape coloniser by mind but was shown his hand by apes with a tribal mind. His philosophy was that of Caesar that we know, however, Noa and his Clan/Tribe truly embodied Caesars law without them even knowing it by the time for Proximus’s end. Noa is sort of a new Caesar in his own way, he has gone through the ‘Rise’ and the next film will be his ‘Dawn’ or ‘War’. So to speak. Overall, a solid film that still has that iconic ‘Planet of The Apes’ DNA but with a new spirit. Very Horus like I must admit, Eagles, Death/Rebirths. Solid.
I saw this movie last night. Very intriguing premise with the involvement of Maia how her story is interwined with Noah but the ending speaks to a sequal? The action sequencing are intense and violent and well paced, but overall a thumbs up 🎉
I just got out of the theater. *SPOILERS!!!* I have mixed thoughts. Firstly, I haven't been to the theater in forever, so this movie had me shaking, gripping my chair, edge of my seat. I was absolutely completely caught up in the story. The soundtrack is great. Owen Teague as Noah is unbelievable, his performance is so incredibly likeable, he is an amazing protagonist. The movie looks beautiful, not just the special effects but also the sets. My gripe is that...in a way, a movie full of apes somehow felt like it lacked apes. The human storyline was so in focus. We spent almost half of the movie inside human architecture. And the full final act of the movie revolves around human technology, human architecture, human history, etc. And I'm not alone, some top reviewers also expressed the sentiment that we wanted more apes. *****SPOILER*****SPOILER***** I'm worried for the trilogy moving forward. Doesn't mean I won't watch it. But the reason I really liked my theory of humans re-evolving was that it gave time for gradual evolution of humans to clash with a powerful kingdom of apes. The way the movie ended, it sort of feels like a continuation of war for the planet of the apes. But these apes seem less sophisticated even than the apes in War. A civilization of apes with nothing but cattle prods is dominating every other civilization. Meanwhile you have humans, and potentially more humans incoming, with 21st century technology. The risk feels like there's a huge mismatch, and the only way to storytell out of that mismatch is to essentially retell the story from War.
I’m probably not going to have time to go to the theater this weekend but I’m hoping to in next weekend. I’m glad to hear you liked it and I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Well one things for sure humans were good when it came to technology since some of it lasted over 3 hundred years. But failed miserably at humanity, that's the message I took from this franchise beginning with the first one with Charlston Heston. Caesar understood compassion with purpose and it was passed down to Noa, I hope his character continues going forward. I'm in my seventies, this has been a life long investment that's been paying huge dividends since day one!
Proximus ceaser character was a bit underdeveloped. More depth could’ve been added to him, rather than just some deranged aggrandizing bafoon. I feel like this movie was only a setup for another trilogy. Not giving much, but also not giving too little. It wasn’t horrible but rise of the planet of the apes had much more substance.
I am vey excited to see this movie! I’m seeing this Thursday at Regal Cinemas. Does anyone know if the collectible popcorn buckets and cup will be available to purchase on Thursday?
It was a really good movie. Honestly it's only downside is that it has to stand up to the previous trilogy, and they did alright. Can't say I'm as attached to these new characters. That's going to take some time, but overall I think we're off to a great start.
OH MY GOD Kingdom of the planet of the apes was such an amazing film everything about it was insane the fights were so brutal and amazing the landscape the setting was oh so beautiful and proximus was so menecing he was such a good villain I can’t wait to watch it again with my friends soon
I recently watched the Planet of the Apes film and I found your channel! The only films I haven’t watched yet are Battle and the 2001 film and I plan to watch them within the next few days. Then my grandpa and I are gonna watch Kingdom next Friday, the 17th! I’m very exited to see the new film and I’ve loved the previous films that I’ve watched!
What happened to Rocco this is heartbreaking not that many people were talking about the opening scene with the Apes Barry Caesar and all standing Unison together I love that
Now I am really excited about seeing it this weekend. I got my tickets for El Capitan and just holding my breath to see it. I am acting the same intensity as I feel before a Star Wars movie.
Great review! I was thinking about that the other day trying to pinpoint another franchise or even another trilogy that’s consistently wonderful and quality driven all the way through. The only ones I can think of that come close are the Dark Knight and OG Star Wars trilogy. But those 3rd installments don’t come close to Caesar’s 3rd installment in my ranking. This franchise really does top it.
I have my own theory about Mae . Remember in original film Series . They had the mutated under dwellars who lived in ruins of new York city and worshiped a neuclear bomb . I Think that She in reality is an under dwellar . Somehow the samian flu have a different effect on Them . They dont become mute . But instead they have mutated and keep their Intelligence . So with Mae . They under dwellars Will introduced into the ape saga . Thats just what I Think .
I have so many great things I want to say about this movie, but I also don't want to take up your entire comment section lol. I completely agree that it is probably consistently well done franchise of the 21st century. One thing that I really appreciated about this movie is that the apes are apes. In the original, they were so focused I'm making the Apes appear human that they were Stripped Away of all of their ape-ness. They were more or less humans that just happened to look like apes. I think it's fascinating seeing what it would look like if a for actually able to build a society and create a culture for themselves. In the 2001 movie, they tried a weird blend of looking and talking like humans, but occasionally acting like apes. It just didn't sit well with me. I think the way this franchise is handling it is so much better. Just let the apes be apes.
Agree! I actually do think the apes in Kingdom start taking on slightly more human movements and traits, but they still feel and act very much like real apes. It's great!
Hey man wonderful review, I also loved the movie. Do you have the image of the orange poster you used in the end? I looked it up and didnt really find any good quality images. It is astonishing.
I don't really understand why many people seem to take issue with the character of Mae. She is a very nuanced character that sometimes takes radical action to do the things that seem right to her beliefs (won't go into details because of spoilers). This ambiguity is much more appealing to me than a pure "good" character. I just don't get why likeability is so important for people, I think it should be about how the particular character fits into the world of the movie and how it interacts with the other characters.
That's exactly why I'm so interested in her. She isn't just another human who grows a bond with apes and is clearly going to evolve as a character, and because I'm not sure which direction she'll end up going it really makes her unique. I just would like to get to know her as an actual person more.
I agree. For me personally, one of the main issues with the reboot series was that the human characters always seemed boring and one-dimensional. That's why I think her character is such a breath of fresh air. In fact, I'd go as far as saying she's the most interesting human character since Dr. Hasslein.
I agree with everything you said, her character was very nuanced. Also, many people did not realized it, i noticed the facial expression the character Mae had, when she seen feral humans being deduced to animal like conditions, it was like a sadness vibe she gave. Her character was more a less a advocate of the human race, or what humanity once was! My rant.
i waited for a final shot of Proximus in the water, but they deliberately avoided that. So, what we have here is a Darth Vader situation. I think he will definitely come back.
My problem home with this Apes is that while Rise, Dawn and War are all concerned about fleshing out the world, their is also intense attention paid to characters and telling a compelling story. I think each of those movies can be watched separate from eachothers and not steuggle, while Kingdom is so concerned with setting up another trilogy and avenues to explore, it doesn’t focus enough in the story in front of them. I notice a lot of the major compliments of the characters or events we see in this movie are how much potential they have for future movies which I think says something. The others made you excited for a sequel because what you just saw was so compelling. Kingdom makes you feel that you are missing something and that’s why you want the sequel as I did when the credits rolled
I’m watching it Friday at noon can’t wait! I was able to watch like 4/5 of the originals plus like HALF of the Tim Burton one, I’ve been really busy. But lots of channels like yours have been able to refresh me on the Cesar trilogy which matters most so I feel prepared for it!

Great score and wes Ball did great job Looking foward seeing what they do next All the josh 👍
Watched it today in 4DX I wanted more out of proximus ! And the final act could have been longer and better ! But THE CGI made up for it lol 😂 , it looked so real with the lighting/ sun hitting the apes , it was just amazing !
Watched the film, it's real good, and exactly what I wanna see in Planet of The Apes. It focused on the character we have, and honestly, I feel for lots of the characters.
Just got done watching it, and I have to say that I thought it was awesome. Definitely not where I thought this movie was going, and I get why some people don’t like the ending, but I’m excited to see where this franchise goes! Also, though not necessary, stay through the credits for… something.
Just back from seeing it. It was... Good! Not great, just good. It's the type of movie where, because plot, things happen. Will have to watch it again to see if it gets better on repeat viewing, but after the great Caesar trilogy, I'm a little disappointed, but there is no way it could have matched the last three films IMO. But thank god it is no Tim Burton's POTA.

Excited to see it in a few hours! One question, which previous entry in the franchise do you think Kingdom is most reminiscent of (in terms of vibe and plot), or is this something entirely new for you?
I'd say a mix between the original 1968 movie and Rise, but still doing very much its own thing.
Just saw the movie. I LOVED IT!!! Noah was great. Raka was also great. The baby doll saying "mama" like the original Planet of the Apes gave me goosebumps. Can't wait for the next one.
I've really enjoyed all your analysis and build up to the movie, so delighted you've enjoyed it! Looking forward to seeing it this weekend.
As a part 1 should…
I had one gripe with the movie.
SPOILERS:
Maybe a nitpick, but it was kinda obvious Raka didn’t die. And I felt that Proximus’s “death” was ambiguous. Strong possibility they are both still alive. While I’d be happy if they both live. I won’t be thrilled if we get two fake out deaths I guess?
Or I could totally be wrong and they could be gone
I think Raka is definitely coming back, Proximus maybe, but who knows.
Im glad you enjoyed the movie! Your review made me so hype to watch it! Cant wait to see it on Saturday!!
I’ve heard some criticism that it isn’t as dark as the previous trilogy
It's about as dark as Rise and somewhat like Dawn, but definitely lighter than War.
i think that has a lot to do with how vibrant it is. Dawn for example had a blue tone with lots of rain and stuff.
I just saw it and i love it. There was so much that happened
Glad you loved it!
Catching this on Friday, can’t wait especially after this video!
My theory is that Mae is to the film what Kamandi was to the Kamandi comic. A hidden bunker of humans might be involved.
I just found this channel and today and I gotta say this is some good wholesome content for sure. Subscribed.
Thank you!
@@Ape-Nation and thank you as well my good man. I’m making my way through your videos now watching your Escape review. I have always loved these movies. Even the Tim Burton one. I’m definitely learning some fun little pieces of information about them as well from your videos and so again I say thank you.
Watched it tonight and i really enjoyed it. I think the worst people are gonna feel about it is that it's just ok but I believe the story is heading in an interesting enough direction, the sequel will boost how people feel about this film down the line.
One of my favorite lines in the film is "shit." You'll know when you know
Saw it today and heck it was awesome! The visuals, particularly in the third act, stand out as some of the best. Another solid entry to the franchise!
Also this movie had to use its budget for more CGI environments and wayyy more apes than the other movies.
unfortunately i can’t watch it until next thursday 😢 but i am so hyped to see it
Sucks I gotta wait till Sunday. Looking forward to your spoiler review. I bet you'll see it 2 more times till then. I know this is definitely a multiple theater experience for me.
Yep! Already got tickets for round 2 on Saturday
The action sequencing are intense and violent and well paced, but overall a thumbs up 🎉
Yes, we are finally here!
Thanks for the review!
Thanks for watching!
*****SPOILER*****SPOILER*****
I'm worried for the trilogy moving forward.
This movie was EVERYTHING. Wow I’m satisfied
Been watching all of your vids that lead up to this movie so safe to say I’ve been looking forward to your review more than anyone else’s
9:45 one of my friends said Mae taught Noa a swear word so I can't wait to see that X3
I’m probably not going to have time to go to the theater this weekend but I’m hoping to in next weekend. I’m glad to hear you liked it and I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Hope you enjoy it!
They should be there! Just get to the theater early.
@@Ape-NationI’m thankfully going to the first showing of it at 3:00pm.
It was a really good movie. Honestly it's only downside is that it has to stand up to the previous trilogy, and they did alright. Can't say I'm as attached to these new characters. That's going to take some time, but overall I think we're off to a great start.
I finished seeing it about an hour or two ago. I was skeptical too, but I'm in love with it. I want to see it again, it's so good!!
OH MY GOD
Kingdom of the planet of the apes was such an amazing film everything about it was insane the fights were so brutal and amazing the landscape the setting was oh so beautiful and proximus was so menecing he was such a good villain I can’t wait to watch it again with my friends soon
Can’t wait to watch it tonight !
What website
@@Stoppedcapping no website. Early access at my theater :)
Just subscribed to you. Only watch a video once a week but damn bro you need some more subscribers. Content is awesome.
Thank you!
What happened to Rocco this is heartbreaking not that many people were talking about the opening scene with the Apes Barry Caesar and all standing Unison together I love that
Did you catch that reference/nod to the 68 original? I can hear some of the music/motif from the Jerry Goldsmith score.
Yes! So many Goldsmith music cues.
I just came from the theater. Have some opinions. When can we seriously discuss this?
Now I am really excited about seeing it this weekend. I got my tickets for El Capitan and just holding my breath to see it. I am acting the same intensity as I feel before a Star Wars movie.
Hopefully seeing it next week. Looking forward to it.
Saw this with my stepdad we loved it
Great review!
The only review that matters imo
What a wonderful reveiw!
really enjoyed the movie. my only flaw is the is i didnt really like the nova character story it just felt off
I have so many great things I want to say about this movie, but I also don't want to take up your entire comment section lol.

My rant.
I got my ticket for 2:30 today
I am SOOO excited!!!
The last three were perfect ❤
Thank you for the spoiler free review 🙏
Thanks for watching!
@@Ape-Nationyour welcome I love your channel ❤
i waited for a final shot of Proximus in the water, but they deliberately avoided that.
I'm going to hold off on watching this, I know its spoiler free but I'm still going to wait. I'm seeing the movie in 12 hours!
how was it?
I wasn’t expecting it to start off like that tbh! Yup… I cried 😂
Yeppp, the first shot had my jaw on the floor in shock 😅
Loved this movie! Ima go for my 2nd watch this weekend
Well now I’m even more excited to watch this
Tis indeed a wonderful day
WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!
I’m watching it Friday at noon can’t wait! I was able to watch like 4/5 of the originals plus like HALF of the Tim Burton one, I’ve been really busy. But lots of channels like yours have been able to refresh me on the Cesar trilogy which matters most so I feel prepared for it!
i'm booking for this film tomorrow I'm so pumped and going to maybe bring one or two tissues? I'm 100% looking forward to this and can't wait APES.TOGETHER.STRONG and WHAT A WONDERFUL DAY!!!!
I loved it for beginning to end Josh . It was incredible experience. I Enjoyed the opening and seeing may for first time ,very interesting character and it had Spirit of the original movie . The hunt scene was brilliant and trochs to Jerry's goldswith to original movie . Rockra was great character. RROXIMA was fantastic villain and moment we see the human doll was fantastic and end was good . May didn’t know if humans and Apes could live in peace. Thats was so right . Great score and wes Ball did great job
Looking foward seeing what they do next All the josh 👍
Watched it today in 4DX I wanted more out of proximus ! And the final act could have been longer and better ! But THE CGI made up for it lol 😂 , it looked so real with the lighting/ sun hitting the apes , it was just amazing !
Watched the film, it's real good, and exactly what I wanna see in Planet of The Apes.
It focused on the character we have, and honestly, I feel for lots of the characters.
I just bought a ticket today. Im quite excited.
In two days everyone will be saying What a wonderful day!
Just got done watching it, and I have to say that I thought it was awesome. Definitely not where I thought this movie was going, and I get why some people don’t like the ending, but I’m excited to see where this franchise goes! Also, though not necessary, stay through the credits for… something.
great review, but I am going to see it whatever, and buy it on 4k anyway, but great to hear its a winner
Just watched it today🔥🔥🔥 surprised that there were only like 6 (with me and one of my friends) people in the hall🤔
Really? My theater was PACKED
Awesome movie ❤
