I feel like the “romance is the only plot” critique definitely applies to Aria too- especially after season 3. Like I genuinely cannot think of a non-Ezra related plot that she had besides Byron’s affair/family dysfunction, but again that was in the earlier seasons and was used to parallel her own teacher-student relationship.
It sucks because in the books particularly the last entry, Emily has such an interesting part in the story. She takes charge and takes Alison down. They watered her down and just gave her crappy love interests besides Maya. And the whole thing with the eggs and Alison is so ugh.
As a gay boy who grew up in the 2010s i will NEVER forgive Marlene King for robbing us Emily like that. We barely had any LGBT representation when she came and they gave her only tragedy and boringness. They could have done better.
I kinda like how in the book Sara Shepherd talks about Emily family comes from a very religious background and how she and her sister don’t get along because of her choices that she made. It made her storyline quite interesting. I was surprised how in the show her mom lets her live with Hanna especially since Hanna mom is often not around whenever Hanna out doing whatever the hell she wants.
same idea could be applied to aria, she literally always has a love interest even two at that it's always ezra and someone else. it's one of the things that i hate about aria like miss girl could not stay single and then ultimately picks THE WORST GUY.
15:34 I hate that trope too and I hate this couple mainly because Paige tries to drown Emily and then turns around to kiss her the 1st time I have seen that trope was Glee with karofsky and he made me SOOOOO mad I went on a whole rant about that to my sister and it drove me crazy
the obvious fan service of having Emison be officially together at the end was certainly a win for fans & I was rooting for them too. But in hindsight we gotta be real & the real tea is Emily and Alison had far more convincing chemistry during the flashbacks. But the final season when they actually became romantically involved the chemistry was quite tepid
Truly season 7 is such a mess. They should have ended after the CeCe reveal and then spent the rest of the season explaining and wrapping up things. But no. Secret British twin reveal 😭
There’s over 170,000 words in the English lexicon and none to express how much I HATE that Emily’s romantic relationships start and end with Alison. It’s like she was trapped and not given time to grow. She should’ve been single in the finale

I think what we're also missing here is that Emily is the only WOC out of the main liars - not to say that the writers were racist, but.......
