My my my, what a joy it is to watch this game in action in the hands of pros. Its almost more fun than watching a real MMA match. No charge up supers, just motion and realistic, plausible martial arts moves. Can't believe it holds up this well after 12 years.
VF6 is in working progress. VF6 is real. Now You guys have to ask SEGA Not to casualaslise or change the system to please casuals and new comers. All they have to do is to add a story mode (like VF5 patchinko slot story mode..)for new comers and technically and graphically mind blowing to appeal new comers.
Vf6 and also do a vf x tekken and leave the controls as they are for example leave tekken controls as wat they r and vf controls as they r maybe just change a few things like combos to make it viable
It's impossible. How would you do For side gard side throws different bounces differents stunts staggers different wall effects..? The frame data etc. etc..VF is too deep for tekken. And honestly .. Mixing a more realistic game based on traditional martial arts with farting Bears and weird designs (some are good but some are really ridiculous or Ugly..) would be a mistake. VF doesn't need anything but Vf. No need cheesy stuff to atract casuals. Just VF5 Patchinko Slot STORY MODE for casuals and crazy realistic graphics. Like AM2 always did at the time.

VF was the best for realistic representation of a martial arts style in a video game. They should definitely redo it now but add more styles (BJJ, 52 Blocks, etc.)

Virtua Fighter, especially 5 and fs, are really much just like sport fighting games. It's not based heavily on combos only and i relies on fundamentals and game mechanics knowledge. Awesome game.
Nah I don’t think so. This gameplay is alot closer to a tekken or a soul calibur than a sports fighting sim like Fight Night. We are still dealing with active frames, blockstun, etc here not to mention that the fighting styles in this game are also just about as fantasy based as tekken it’s just a little more grounded.

What may be preventing you is the insane depth of VF is really clear for any player level to recognise, and that could be making you feel fearful about the game. Maybe fearful of putting in the effort as everyone may be too far ahead in skill level. Just like any other game such as sfv, you just have to jump in and go for it.

There's no asskicking like an akira asskicking, he zips around, slams into you, blasts you across the stage and makes you stumble over your nuts. You lose your whole healthbar in 5 seconds. Homestay is master of the meatplow :)

Oh snap! This is the first time I've seen Adam since a VF meetup in 2002 :) I remember him as a skinny kid with colorful shirts who'd ruin my Lau, and now he's a man with a 5'o'clock shadow and the tired eyes of someone with serious responsibilities. I have a lot of good memories of VF meetups, and I'm a little sad the game is semi-dead, but I see the overall fighting game community is as strong as ever, and I like knowing there's another generation of kids is out there enjoying the same sort of experience I was getting 15 years ago.
The arguments over Virtua Fighter vs Tekken in these comments is so stupid. Both are engaging games for their own reasons. VF leans more into realism while Tekken is more about fantasy theatricality. Neither approach is wrong. Both series have an important legacy, but Tekken was ultimately able to be more financially successful because the PS1 and PS2 sold better than the Saturn and Dreamcast which isn't VF's fault. I don't even play these games and I can figure that out. C'mon people
Your right!!!! I played the hell out of VF2 on The Saturn. Then I brought the PlayStation because it was a serious gamer system. Saturn had alot of 2d and arcade games. PS had everything you could want. I played Tekken2 but I thought VF was the better game. Tekken 3 went to a whole new level and im glad I chose PS. I still love the Saturn to this day. I could only afford one at the time.
Rough up a little bit of Virtua Fighter training mode, and i watched this Akira player makes me rethink my impression with this game. The combo seems so simple and dull but the effort behind the strings is not just pop out in a day or two, is a lifetime effort to really execute this hard combo. It makes me think Tekken is a easier game after trying the game.
Great stuff from all the players. So glad that the VF community is still supporting the game. Really wish Sega would show the same love. It’s because of VF why I prefer 3D fighters over 2D ones. The simplicity, yet technicality of VF makes it such a great game. The barrier of entry can be scary, and it can take forever to event get decent with one character, but that’s also the beauty of the series. Good stuff to Homestay Akira, amazing stuff.

This game has the smoothest animation in a fighting game I've ever seen, has no artificial slowdown or stupid super animations, and has brilliant attention to detail on both characters and stages. If you think Tekken looks better, maybe there's an argument for that, but SFV looks like fucking shit and even people who play it competitively will tell you games 20 years ago are more visually appealing.

He's Japanese verus american players what do you expect? In SF mostly all the finalists in top 8 were all japanese players even top 16 were mostly japanese. Fighting games and arcades are from and in japan so you can be sure they will beat the west like they mostly always do.

Depends on the game. In general Korea dominates a lot of competitive scenes in various genres. Tekken, Starcraft and League of legends are their most known ones.
Ty Lewis a big reason why Japanese and Korean players are usually so much more successful is that certain games release as much as 2 years+ earlier on arcade in those countries. So aside from the greater cultural significance and whatnot, they’re actually 2 years ahead of everyone else experience-wise a lot of the time. Like you said, though, it depends on the game - and I think the arcade situation is largely why.
Because in Japan Arcades still exist, this game is from 2006 so you know no one is playing it in the states but in Japan it's probably chilling in an arcade getting touched every so often allowing Homestay to get some practice.
My friends (who LOVE Tekken) hate when I say VF is THE most technical 3D fighter out there. It's pretty evident once you try to play with Akira for a moment then see a top level Akira player use him. It's such a poetic thing to watch.

I love VF5 the combat feels the most realestic of all fighting games. Looks like a real martial art tournament. It's not my favorite fighter but I do love the game.
Is a great game! Just has a learning curve but is worth it if you're consistent cause this game has depth. Also this game will be free on PS+ doesn't hurt to try!

That's because Virtua Fighter is irrelevant. Similar to DOA, everything that these 3D martial arts fighters were setting out to do, Tekken has always done it better. And with VF5's dated visuals, janky animations, and cheap stock sound effects, it's an incredibly lame and boring game to watch as a spectator. Playing for nostalgia is one thing, but both Sega and Koei Tecmo have absolutely no place in the competitive fighting game scene anymore.

+pluff crock Some possible reasons vf is deeper than tekken: -throws are far more viable in vf than tekken which means throw/strike mixups are deadlier; in high level tekken, if you can see which arm is extended further, you know which throw to break (which is why throws rarely connect in high level tekken). In comparison, in vf, throws are the fastest moves and have numerous ways to break, however, they can’t throw an opponent out of a strike (even if they input an attack on the next-to-last frame before a throw occurs), so if you honestly believe your opponent is going for a throw, you can go all in for a launcher, but it’s high risk because you have a high chance of being counterhit if you guess wrong. -input windows are much higher in vf than tekken, which means more time to buffer moves; less likely to lose because you knew which move to do, but didn’t do it fast enough. -dodges (or sidesteps) work far better in vf; if you input dodge after your opponent attacks, you will get a successful dodge that covers a lot of ground and is quick. If you input dodge before your opponent attacks (or doesn’t attack at all), you will get a slow dodge that doesn’t dodge anything and is vulnerable to attack. This means that as an attacker, if you know your opponent is going to dodge, you don’t have to beat them by doing a move that can’t be dodged (like a sweep); just delay your attack, and it’ll force the slow dodge, and you’ll hit them. But if the defender knows you’re going for a delayed attack, instead of dodging, they can try to attack right away, and it’ll counterhit you, etc. -the block button in vf allows you to clear the engine of any possible input. Which enables you to do different moves after a string much faster. Example. If you have a character who has a f+p,p string, if you want to do 2 f+p’s in a row instead of f+p,p, you can do f+p, press block immediately, and then you can do the 2nd f+p right away once you can move. In tekken however, if you do f+p, you’ll have to wait a little longer so the engine no longer thinks you’re doing the 2nd move to be able to do f+p again. The block button also allows you to buffer moves out of blockstun a lot easier. -backdashes are far less abusable in vf compared to tekken. It seems that if you want to get good at tekken that you’ll need to be able to korean backdash cancel really well repeatedly. It’s far less likely that you’ll need to string together numerous movements in vf (because you can’t escape stuff with backdash cancels as easily in vf), and your left wrist and fingers will probably thank you for it. -vf also has this thing in vf5 where moves when blocked when the opponent is turned to the side gives better frame advantage to the attacker; this encourages them to keep attacking. I say all this not to downplay tekken; i think tekken’s a wonderful fighting game. But i personally prefer vf over tekken. High level tekken’s a lot more movement-heavy and less throw-viable, and moves that crush in tekken tend to beat out a lot more stuff compared to vf, which not only makes it less deeper than vf, but less entertaining to watch.
in tekken at high level throws are used to change position when they're skipped based on which throw you use, you have to know how to sidestep every move (some moves can only be avoided to the left or right side of your character) and the backdash cancels are used to avoid low range moves and reduce your opponent's choice and avoid clean hits (some moves that are stronger on close range) and the fact that you can't cancel the recovery in between strings forces you to know exactly when your character recovers in every situation. anyway thank you, you're one of the few people who's not like "virtua fighter is better!!" without explaining why
Thx for replying, but IMO every one of your explanations for tekken also applies to vf as well. So it’s not like the things you explained are unique to tekken over vf. I just personally believe vf does those things better than tekken. Also, when I said you can use the block button in vf to cancel strings, I don’t mean it shortens the recovery from -6 to -4 with the block button. I mean that the engine no longer expects you to do the next move, so you can do whatever you want w/o fear of triggering the next move in the string. Like you know how super-delayable devil jin’s b,f+2,1,2 is? Every string in vf is more-or-less like that, but you also have the freedom to press block after any of the moves to do w/e you want. Like if you wanted to do a frame-perfect immediate EWGF after b,f+2,1 with devil jin, it’d be much harder under the tekken engine without triggering the last hit of the string. Under the vf engine, with the block-cancelling and longer input buffer, it’s much easier. Anyways, at the end of the day, ppl play the fighting games they like not because they’re “deeper” or “more balanced,” but bc they feel “fun” to them. That’s the honest truth nobody admits; they just wanna sound like they’re smarter and know better. That’s why a lotta ppl still love playing umvc3 even though it’s got so many issues. The ppl who like vf say it’s more balanced and deeper, but that’s also b/c it feels more fun to them. Nobody wants to play a balanced, deep fighter if it isn’t fun.

8:01. Fuzzy (I hate that name) is not about blocking low, it's about ducking high while blocking mid. On contrary to what the black kid said, trying to catch the ducking state with a low throw is not a real or viable tactic. at 10:00 they inaccurately say "caught the fuzzy" when Homestay was simply thrown because he stood still. 8:48 Jean doesn't have a guard break move. (*-->*k is stagger not GB). etc. I could go on. 11:21"which is what he just did" is just incorrect and pretentious. 12:02 "Jeans back throw is weird because its a forward motion but still back", stupid again throws are defined by final directional input no matter what the animation. Typical gunking up the game and its attributes trying to sound smart because of the strange aura around this game as "elite fighting gamers game".

I bet most companies wouldn't dare to make a game this grounded nowadays "unless it's an MMA sports title" not even SEGA. The most realistic fighting game: Tekken an Virtual Fighter use motion capture but Tekken accelerate most of the moves to make the game more exiting. Virtua fighter keep the real speed so you can see a realistic fight.

Homestay is a tank. Jesus, the dude's skill is amazing. Plus the fact that Akira is not an easy character to play with, yet he made it look like he's a super easy character. Just how moved and responded to any attack.

it's probably because VF is just not a very flashy fighting game, the difficulty curve is a backward slanting curve, and none of the characters are too eye catching. Like I'm with you, I adore VF and i really want another one, it's just not a game that attracts a casual audience to boost its sales. Maybe its inclusion in Yakuza 6 means they're thinking about it
It’s kinda sad how this franchise is on its last leg (unless they’re secretly developing VF6) and it still can’t catch a break with the whole Tekken comparisons. It’s like impossible to have a conversation about VF without mentioning Tekken. As a Tekken player and having played VF occasionally, the VF franchise needs to do a 180 with VF6 just like SC6 and DOA6 (the marketing from Create-A-Soul and revamp of SC6 and the slight redemption of fanservice and polishness of DOA6) VF6 needs to be more flashy with its aesthetics while staying faithful to the franchise and also improve more on customizability and go all out with offline content.
You all realize this game came out when Tekken 5 was fresh? Of the 2, Virtua Fighter was prettier and didn't have the annoying block sound. I love Tekken but have to admit if Virtua Fighter had stayed in development, Tekken would be 2nd fiddle today lol.
Nah. Definitely not. VF was around the whole time Tekken was and didn't sell nearly as much. Tekken's sold more than VF in every installment after 2. Yes, the PlayStation was more successful than Saturn and Dreamcast, but it doesn't help that in an experienced player's hands, VF feels stiff and isn't noob friendly in the slightest. Tekken is flashier and more accessible, hence more popular and has been since '97. The fighting system is so deep and rich, but the characters' personalities range from bland pieces of cardboard to super '90s cheesy, and the overall presentation of VF is dated. VF SORELY needs some innovation should they choose to make a new installment, though I doubt we'll ever see it. Them re-releasing 5 (again) so close to another shiny, new fighting game (GG Strive) was a bad move, IMO. It'll likely die again.
It was not about being released at the same time. It's because Tekken piggybacked on the Playstation 1's success, while VF was attached to the Saturn and later Dreamcast. If it had been the other way around and Vf had been released in the most popular console back then.......it would have influenced people taste for 3d fighters much sooner. I have no doubt.

This is the first time I've seen Adam since a VF meetup in 2002 :) I remember him as a skinny kid with colorful shirts who'd ruin my Lau, and now he's a man with a 5'o'clock shadow and the tired eyes of someone with serious responsibilities. I have a lot of good memories of VF meetups, and I'm a little sad the game is semi-dead, but I see the overall fighting game community is as strong as ever, and I like knowing there's another generation of kids is out there enjoying the same sort of experience I was getting 15 years ago.

The arguments over Virtua Fighter vs Tekken in these comments is so stupid. Both are engaging games for their own reasons. VF leans more into realism while Tekken is more about fantasy theatricality. Neither approach is wrong. Both series have an important legacy, but Tekken was ultimately able to be more financially successful because the PS1 and PS2 sold better than the Saturn and Dreamcast which isn't VF's fault.

Your right!!!! I played the hell out of VF2 on The Saturn. Then I brought the PlayStation because it was a serious gamer system. Saturn had alot of 2d and arcade games. PS had everything you could want. I played Tekken2 but I thought VF was the better game. Tekken 3 went to a whole new level and im glad I chose PS. I still love the Saturn to this day. I could only afford one at the time.

Rough up a little bit of Virtua Fighter training mode, and i watched this Akira player makes me rethink my impression with this game. The combo seems so simple and dull but the effort behind the strings is not just pop out in a day or two, is a lifetime effort to really execute this hard combo.
It makes me think Tekken is a easier game after trying the game.
Great stuff from all the players. So glad that the VF community is still supporting the game. Really wish Sega would show the same love. It’s because of VF why I prefer 3D fighters over 2D ones. The simplicity, yet technicality of VF makes it such a great game. The barrier of entry can be scary, and it can take forever to event get decent with one character, but that’s also the beauty of the series. Good stuff to Homestay Akira, amazing stuff.

This game has the smoothest animation in a fighting game I've ever seen, has no artificial slowdown or stupid super animations, and has brilliant attention to detail on both characters and stages. If you think Tekken looks better, maybe there's an argument for that, but SFV looks like fucking shit and even people who play it competitively will tell you games 20 years ago are more visually appealing.

He's Japanese verus american players what do you expect? In SF mostly all the finalists in top 8 were all japanese players even top 16 were mostly japanese. Fighting games and arcades are from and in japan so you can be sure they will beat the west like they mostly always do.

Depends on the game. In general Korea dominates a lot of competitive scenes in various genres. Tekken, Starcraft and League of legends are their most known ones.
Ty Lewis a big reason why Japanese and Korean players are usually so much more successful is that certain games release as much as 2 years+ earlier on arcade in those countries.
So aside from the greater cultural significance and whatnot, they’re actually 2 years ahead of everyone else experience-wise a lot of the time.
Like you said, though, it depends on the game - and I think the arcade situation is largely why.
Because in Japan Arcades still exist, this game is from 2006 so you know no one is playing it in the states but in Japan it's probably chilling in an arcade getting touched every so often allowing Homestay to get some practice.

I love VF5 the combat feels the most realestic of all fighting games. Looks like a real martial art tournament. It's not my favorite fighter but I do love the game.

That's because Virtua Fighter is irrelevant. Similar to DOA, everything that these 3D martial arts fighters were setting out to do, Tekken has always done it better. And with VF5's dated visuals, janky animations, and cheap stock sound effects, it's an incredibly lame and boring game to watch as a spectator. Playing for nostalgia is one thing, but both Sega and Koei Tecmo have absolutely no place in the competitive fighting game scene anymore.

Some possible reasons vf is deeper than tekken:
-throws are far more viable in vf than tekken which means throw/strike mixups are deadlier; in high level tekken, if you can see which arm is extended further, you know which throw to break (which is why throws rarely connect in high level tekken). In comparison, in vf, throws are the fastest moves and have numerous ways to break, however, they can’t throw an opponent out of a strike (even if they input an attack on the next-to-last frame before a throw occurs), so if you honestly believe your opponent is going for a throw, you can go all in for a launcher, but it’s high risk because you have a high chance of being counterhit if you guess wrong.
-input windows are much higher in vf than tekken, which means more time to buffer moves; less likely to lose because you knew which move to do, but didn’t do it fast enough.
-dodges (or sidesteps) work far better in vf; if you input dodge after your opponent attacks, you will get a successful dodge that covers a lot of ground and is quick. If you input dodge before your opponent attacks (or doesn’t attack at all), you will get a slow dodge that doesn’t dodge anything and is vulnerable to attack. This means that as an attacker, if you know your opponent is going to dodge, you don’t have to beat them by doing a move that can’t be dodged (like a sweep); just delay your attack, and it’ll force the slow dodge, and you’ll hit them. But if the defender knows you’re going for a delayed attack, instead of dodging, they can try to attack right away, and it’ll counterhit you, etc.
-the block button in vf allows you to clear the engine of any possible input. Which enables you to do different moves after a string much faster. Example. If you have a character who has a f+p,p string, if you want to do 2 f+p’s in a row instead of f+p,p, you can do f+p, press block immediately, and then you can do the 2nd f+p right away once you can move. In tekken however, if you do f+p, you’ll have to wait a little longer so the engine no longer thinks you’re doing the 2nd move to be able to do f+p again. The block button also allows you to buffer moves out of blockstun a lot easier.
-backdashes are far less abusable in vf compared to tekken. It seems that if you want to get good at tekken that you’ll need to be able to korean backdash cancel really well repeatedly. It’s far less likely that you’ll need to string together numerous movements in vf (because you can’t escape stuff with backdash cancels as easily in vf), and your left wrist and fingers will probably thank you for it.
-vf also has this thing in vf5 where moves when blocked when the opponent is turned to the side gives better frame advantage to the attacker; this encourages them to keep attacking.
I say all this not to downplay tekken; i think tekken’s a wonderful fighting game. But i personally prefer vf over tekken. High level tekken’s a lot more movement-heavy and less throw-viable, and moves that crush in tekken tend to beat out a lot more stuff compared to vf, which not only makes it less deeper than vf, but less entertaining to watch.
in tekken at high level throws are used to change position when they're skipped based on which throw you use, you have to know how to sidestep every move (some moves can only be avoided to the left or right side of your character) and the backdash cancels are used to avoid low range moves and reduce your opponent's choice and avoid clean hits (some moves that are stronger on close range) and the fact that you can't cancel the recovery in between strings forces you to know exactly when your character recovers in every situation. anyway thank you, you're one of the few people who's not like "virtua fighter is better!!" without explaining why
Thx for replying, but IMO every one of your explanations for tekken also applies to vf as well. So it’s not like the things you explained are unique to tekken over vf. I just personally believe vf does those things better than tekken.
Also, when I said you can use the block button in vf to cancel strings, I don’t mean it shortens the recovery from -6 to -4 with the block button. I mean that the engine no longer expects you to do the next move, so you can do whatever you want w/o fear of triggering the next move in the string. Like you know how super-delayable devil jin’s b,f+2,1,2 is? Every string in vf is more-or-less like that, but you also have the freedom to press block after any of the moves to do w/e you want. Like if you wanted to do a frame-perfect immediate EWGF after b,f+2,1 with devil jin, it’d be much harder under the tekken engine without triggering the last hit of the string. Under the vf engine, with the block-cancelling and longer input buffer, it’s much easier.
Anyways, at the end of the day, ppl play the fighting games they like not because they’re “deeper” or “more balanced,” but bc they feel “fun” to them. That’s the honest truth nobody admits; they just wanna sound like they’re smarter and know better. That’s why a lotta ppl still love playing umvc3 even though it’s got so many issues. The ppl who like vf say it’s more balanced and deeper, but that’s also b/c it feels more fun to them. Nobody wants to play a balanced, deep fighter if it isn’t fun.
Sega need to come out with a new Virtua Fighter game and stop making Sonic game

Emanuel Spencer Adding VF characters to DOA is actually quite appropriate considering they are both vying for the spot of lowest quality 3D martial arts fighter. They both deserve to die off together, just like Sega and Tecmo are already doing.

(*-->*k is stagger not GB). etc.

VF 5 FS is perfectly emulated through rpcs3. It was even playable with minor graphical issues about year and half ago.

it's probably because VF is just not a very flashy fighting game, the difficulty curve is a backward slanting curve, and none of the characters are too eye catching. Like I'm with you, I adore VF and i really want another one, it's just not a game that attracts a casual audience to boost its sales. Maybe its inclusion in Yakuza 6 means they're thinking about it

It’s kinda sad how this franchise is on its last leg (unless they’re secretly developing VF6) and it still can’t catch a break with the whole Tekken comparisons. It’s like impossible to have a conversation about VF without mentioning Tekken. As a Tekken player and having played VF occasionally, the VF franchise needs to do a 180 with VF6 just like SC6 and DOA6 (the marketing from Create-A-Soul and revamp of SC6 and the slight redemption of fanservice and polishness of DOA6) VF6 needs to be more flashy with its aesthetics while staying faithful to the franchise and also improve more on customizability and go all out with offline content.

Lstair videos Technically it is from 2010 but the first version Vanilla VF5 came out in 2006 in arcades, but the first location test was done in 2005.

Yes, the PlayStation was more successful than Saturn and Dreamcast, but it doesn't help that in an experienced player's hands, VF feels stiff and isn't noob friendly in the slightest. Tekken is flashier and more accessible, hence more popular and has been since '97.
The fighting system is so deep and rich, but the characters' personalities range from bland pieces of cardboard to super '90s cheesy, and the overall presentation of VF is dated. VF SORELY needs some innovation should they choose to make a new installment, though I doubt we'll ever see it. Them re-releasing 5 (again) so close to another shiny, new fighting game (GG Strive) was a bad move, IMO. It'll likely die again.
It was not about being released at the same time. It's because Tekken piggybacked on the Playstation 1's success, while VF was attached to the Saturn and later Dreamcast. If it had been the other way around and Vf had been released in the most popular console back then.......it would have influenced people taste for 3d fighters much sooner. I have no doubt.
