We sat down with Sean Murray, the creator and founder of Hello Games. He also created No Man's Sky and told us a bit more about what the game is all about.
I fear this game may get boring and lonely really fast. Just like elite dangerous but at least that game has a multiplayer . this game said to only have up to 3 people. should call this game 3 man sky XD.

And dont tell me that creatures wont be the same cuz they will only with few hundreds of color patents/palets. I feel like their way of setting up multiplayer is good, with everyone being scattered off, but I would like it if you could use a locator to find where your freinds are in stead of having to spend a mounth trying to find your freinds in game.

+gtarules1 Well not really. It's the same idea, but (as weird as it can sound) it's easier to create a procedural Universe like that, than creating a procedural planet as developped as Earth. Just see the "Space Engine" (you can find it easily) it's only developped from nothing by 1 russian dude, and it's a full universe (with no life ofc) but creating a complete procedural earth means incredible AIs, highly advanced generation with lot of premade features, and... too much parameters xD No Man's Sky isn't accurate at all and that's why they can make it, but if they were able to generate something like earth, then they could do the whole universe with this accuracy. I hope you got the point :P

I know he said that you wont really be able to join your friends but i hope you can still like find them or like coordinate with your friends where to meet when. I just feel that even though there's life around you that still isn't enough!
Yeah, you could definitely find each other in the game, but it's going to take a long time, especially since people are literally lightyears away from each other, but you both might have some awesome adventures along the way

Will Sankey I think you know nothing about making and programming a game... it is not as simple as you think. If a game is MADE for consoles it is not easy to just put it on PC, even if it was made on a pc...
I told myself I was done with getting on the hype train but I'm getting this and Battlefront when it comes out. The moment I saw the first look last year I'm like yep totally getting this. Can't wait!
This game does look absolutely amazing, the fact that it's being made by an Indie studio is proof that not every huge AAA looking game has to be made with AAA resources or budgets. I definitely want to get this & Battlefront too.
My guess, is because of the hype around it. Like BF4 (horrible launch) had so much hype that ppl wanted technically an unfinished game. So yea, maybe because it's not finished DICE and EA are learning from their mistakes and not showing anything for it until it is done or showing it later down the road. This is of course is IMO.
No I really do think it is coming out in 2015 unless DICE says it's literally not ready and don't wanna have another mishap like before than yea 2016 I could see as well. But they want to get it out with the release of the new star wars films which I believe was 2015 or 17 can't recall. But time will tell. I'm actually glad they didn't show it because now I don't have to look forward to it. I'm already excited for the lineup that is coming for PS4 so it will keep me excited for a good time. But the big thing here is that while we wait for battlefront and the space to planet transitions with that we can have No Man's Sky during the wait :)
This game mustnt be rushed. These kind of games has to hit all kinds of levels of an open world but the thing is there will be TONS of worlds. Therefore this shouldn't be rushed. It might be GotC. Game of the century.
Is there an option for just straight up single player? I want to play my Brian Eno songs, smoke weed and explore without hearing someone talking on a microphone about cooking ramen.

It sucks that I won't be able to explore with my friends unless I get that one in a billion chance to see them in the infinite universe. A party system would be amazing if I could at least spawn on the same planet as a couple friends. Nonetheless, this game is extremely ambitious and amazing looking and either way I'm excited and determined to find friends in this infinitely expansive universe. :D
Ever played or heard of Journey? The guy being interviewed here said that was his vision for how player action would pan out. You meet someone and you don't know him. You either interact or you don't, and you'll probably never meet them again after you separate. I think a party system or whatever would go directly against the developer's vision.
because i searched it a lot u Will be able to interact face to face with other players but it will be difficult to find other players on that gallaxy cause its MASSIVE me and my brother plan on buying it and set a rendezvous point in one planet so from there we will go on but together protecting each other etc... like co-op i think it would be easier P.S. the map will be the same on ALL the players so we can set a rendezvous point at one EXCACT planet
I adore the art style and the idea of all these different planets you can visit sounds really cool. I can't believe a small indie studio is making such a large, ambitious game.
PC player here (not master race) They said the game is coming first to Playstation not exclusive :D So it might come to the xbox players. To me this is a game everyone should at least experience once so the more platforms the better. It would be great for the small company as well!

from what I gather everytime someone starts their game for the first time, their world is randomly generated, that is then added to the local galaxy and then added to the universe for everyone to find. but I could be wrong.
Lemme clear some things up: 1. It isn't Minecraft in space 2. There is an offline mode 3. It's an exploration based game, not crafting/mining/shooting based game. I'm not saying it isn't there, just that it's not the focus. 4. A game like this hasn't been made before (besides Rodina) 5. DO MORE RESEARCH PEOPLE!!! I'm getting tired of going to videos and seeing people judging it based on just that one video, then I have to do this.
I want the ability to make my own ship/house. Will all the planets be random unexplored planets with wildlife or will there be hub planets that are entire cities? Will there be large races/factions? Can I control my own race/faction? Is is completely singleplayer? Multiplayer where i connect with my friends or one gigantic game that i am apart of like an MMO or is is a mix of them? I have so many unanswered questions but thats only because this game is so broad and open.

There are factions in the game, each one being in control of a certain section of the universe. You may choose to help out certain factions (like in those dogfights when you can take sides) and they will help you in return (better trading and you can also get AI teammates out in space travel), but you will not belong to any faction or make a real difference. It's mainly just for your benefit, with the the trading and whatnot. There aren't any "cities", but the lore of the game involves an ancient long gone civilization that once had cities, and some of the points of interest on many of the planets will be ruins of their civilization. In these ruins you can find out perhaps what may have happened to them, and you can find blueprints of their technology (jetpacks, plasma guns, etc.).
I was thrilled to find out about this. Turns out there are others who want this sort of gaming experience other than myself. This is what I've been waiting for...
You know, I really like the idea of loneliness or maybe just less intaractions with other players, especially for me since I love games that let you do things by yourself and don't focus on bringing 15 other guys to help you out. BUT, I have a long known friend whom I always play with. Almost every game I have, he has too. And I would be sincerely dissapointed if they don't make a way to spawn with your buddy at your side, or at least make a way to track him through the galaxy. And the way the dev described it (on multiple interviews), about players spawning all across the edge of the galaxy, abou planets being real-sized and about the small possibilites of you even encountering a player gets me worried. It makes me think co-op might be impossible with someone you already know. If anyone has information that I don't about this matter, please let me know! Thanks!
Honestly, this is a game that I've always dreamed of but never actually thought it would happen. I've always loved the idea of striking out on my own, making my own journey and doing whatever I want. I feel like this is the game that will deliver on that. A game where you can explore, fight, craft, and not have tons of people next to you while you do it. This game looks amazing and I will surely invest in it.
This game looks beautiful and has the potential to turn out very well. The only thing I'm worried about is whether the game is TOO big. I feel like it would be near impossible to find another player to fight or buddy up with. Maybe it's just me, but playing alone isn't always fun.
Actually I think it's just debuting on ps4 because they haven't pushed to make it on anything else so I mean technically it's a times exclusive but I don't think there's anything contractually binding them to make it for ps4 only, so whenever they decide to create an Xbox one version it will happen.. Luckily I have ps4 tho :p
I think both are advanced gaming systems but PS4 is better in the graphics part, when your talking about all around entertainment Xbox wins, no matter what you get both systems are great iv played both its all personal preference, no bias involved here. Its going to come to all systems, cause they want to get as much publicity as possible..
This game and Metal Gear Solid 5 are going to force me to isolate myself to play them to such an extent that the only social interaction I will get is talking to the NPC's or to myself. Alone in space. WHICH SOUNDS FREAKING AWESOME. GAH. SO MUCH HYPE.
This game is the next step for indie games, if I may say so. I've always seen Indie games as small, short pieces of art. Like Flower or Journey or Octodad for example. But this is massive. This and Destiny are the two games I am the most excited about, and with games like Order 1886 and Uncharted on the line I think this is quite a unusual thing. So I hope this will get as much attention as it deserves.

imagine how epic the moments will be when you actually do come across another player, it will be so rare that those moments will be so special. God knows what people might do when they finally find each other :)

Can I play offline? I want to feel completely alone and discover my own planets and be sucked into the game world for hours. It was said that planets that others discovered will be listed as discovered and it will show what people did there.

I doubt it'll be there forever, it's physically impossibe to plan for a game that could rack up an infinit amount of ships at the bottom of the ocean. But i reckon it would stay there for a while. Maybe it'd vanish if you get yourself a new ship. But i guess we'll just have to see
***** it was said in a different interview something like that wouldn't be seen by other players only really significant things like say if you wiped all life off the planet everyone who went to that planet would see there is no life there and it would tell the player you did that but if you crashed a ship at the bottom of the ocean your machine would remember that and you'll see it but chances are no one else will see it...I hope this helped some
The fact that people are saying it doesnt make sense or that theres nothing to do, no story etc is exactly the reason a game like this needs to be made. I would be happy spending hours exploring the universe and interacting with the growing worlds. Thats because i dont need heavy action and my tastes dont rely on constant shooting and violence. A game like this doesnt need a heavy narrative. The way i see it is that you make your own story, and i expect theyll add new ways to take that further
Personally I think scattering players across the universe is a great idea for an MMO. It makes finding someone specific or any other person in general a lot more exciting and memorable.

Less a setup headache.

I feel like the developers are really underestimating the gamer. I read an article saying that the no man's sky sever will only be able to handle 2-4 players being in the same area at the same time, because the world is so large that they honestly don't believe gamers will ever find each other. But that's not what gamers do, it's in the human natural to seek out others. and so just like any other MMO, I foresee the players creating a center hub of planets to be the inside ring, or place to trade and hang out. This will result in sever break down for the developers.
I think it would be awesome if the game had a feature where 1 in a million planets had some sort of mysterious ruins you had to explore and discover. That would keep your hopes up for a special surprise possibly.

Some people seem to be upset the story isn't a huge part of the game, but for me that makes the game. So many games that come out now are restricted to a story and claim to be "open world" or that the player makes the choices. I'm really looking forward to a game where it's solely based around exploration and discovery.
This game would be perfect if it took a bit more from eve online or civ. Specifically with a sovereignty system of some sort. Just imagine getting a group of friends together, flying to some remote planet, and starting your own empire or something. You could build trade hubs by constructing space stations and attaching them to specific planets or moons. Possibly wars or disputes over resources. Player built diplomacy essentially. That, is something I would play for 10+ years. I know this may be unrealistic at the moment, but I hope to find a game like that someday. (fingers crossed for No man's sky and star citizen)

here should be a thing where you can come across 2 or more planets having a war or battle and u can either pick a side, ignore them or destroy them both it would be a rare event with almost as much resources as destroying a space station
Couple of quick questions. Hopefully someone from the game development will answer them or read them.. 1) How the hell are the spaceships that small? also, darn fast and powerful for a small aircraft? 2) How the heck are those 'enemies' identified? A little too simplistic? 3) Why is everything orange? 4) How about making this in third person view? I am sure alot of people will appreciate not getting nauseous just to play this. 5) I think that you can show more on how your customization are like? I feel like that will be the crux of this game and it will be great for you guys to set the tone with the initial options.
+Squid Fish You still totally can, its just going to take a while. I think the best course of action for trying to find friends is to start heading towards the center of the universe. The closer you get the more chances you will start running into people and potentially your friends.

I cant wait for this game, this kind of open ended creativity allows the game to evolve into something that couldnt originally be imagined and leads to a unique and beautiful world.
This looks interesting, but I don't know about not having a strong core story/mission. Exploration is cool, and procedurally generated environments/starships/planets/ ect are great... but what is it exactly that keeps you coming back? I feel like the modern gamer is going to get super hyped by this game bc its indie, purchase the game, play for a few hours/days, and then lose interest quickly bc there isn't a story board associated with it.
Who cares about the story man. The gameplay and immersion in the universe are the most important. The multiplayer oriented games are the ones I play the most and It's not the story that makes me come back.

I always want a game like this, where you has the capacity to explore an entire world and then get inton your ship and fly away to the space to explore other words or planets without loading , finding new species and diferents faunas etc. So a indie developer that only are 4 guys thought the same and started to make it. Why on hell any big developer didn't think an idea like that? I dont mind it is harder to make look well , im only want what i dream and , this indies developer were inteligents . +gtarules1 Well not really. It's the same idea, but (as weird as it can sound) it's easier to create a procedural Universe like that, than creating a procedural planet as developped as Earth. Just see the "Space Engine" (you can find it easily) it's only developped from nothing by 1 russian dude, and it's a full universe (with no life ofc) but creating a complete procedural earth means incredible AIs, highly advanced generation with lot of premade features, and... too much parameters xD No Man's Sky isn't accurate at all and that's why they can make it, but if they were able to generate something like earth, then they could do the whole universe with this accuracy.

This game does look absolutely amazing, the fact that it's being made by an Indie studio is proof that not every huge AAA looking game has to be made with AAA resources or budgets.

My guess, is because of the hype around it. Like BF4 (horrible launch) had so much hype that ppl wanted technically an unfinished game. So yea, maybe because it's not finished DICE and EA are learning from their mistakes and not showing anything for it until it is done or showing it later down the road. This is of course is IMO.
No I really do think it is coming out in 2015 unless DICE says it's literally not ready and don't wanna have another mishap like before than yea 2016 I could see as well. But they want to get it out with the release of the new star wars films which I believe was 2015 or 17 can't recall. But time will tell. I'm actually glad they didn't show it because now I don't have to look forward to it. I'm already excited for the lineup that is coming for PS4 so it will keep me excited for a good time. But the big thing here is that while we wait for battlefront and the space to planet transitions with that we can have No Man's Sky during the wait :)

Nipping Elk pirating on consoles is almost impossible on xbox one and ps4, ps3 and xbox 360 is way harder than PC.
I want them to add a distress beacon, and you could get a distress upgrade to a hyperdrive. It can jump to any close distress beacon, and you could work as a first responder, second only to sentinels

It sucks that I won't be able to explore with my friends unless I get that one in a billion chance to see them in the infinite universe. A party system would be amazing if I could at least spawn on the same planet as a couple friends. Nonetheless, this game is extremely ambitious and amazing looking and either way I'm excited and determined to find friends in this infinitely expansive universe. :D

Ever played or heard of Journey? The guy being interviewed here said that was his vision for how player action would pan out. You meet someone and you don't know him. You either interact or you don't, and you'll probably never meet them again after you separate. I think a party system or whatever would go directly against the developer's vision.

PC player here (not master race) They said the game is coming first to Playstation not exclusive :D So it might come to the xbox players. To me this is a game everyone should at least experience once so the more platforms the better. It would be great for the small company as well!

from what I gather everytime someone starts their game for the first time, their world is randomly generated, that is then added to the local galaxy and then added to the universe for everyone to find.
but I could be wrong.
Lemme clear some things up:
1. It isn't Minecraft in space
2. There is an offline mode
3. It's an exploration based game, not crafting/mining/shooting based game. I'm not saying it isn't there, just that it's not the focus.
4. A game like this hasn't been made before (besides Rodina)

Will all the planets be random unexplored planets with wildlife or will there be hub planets that are entire cities? Will there be large races/factions? Can I control my own race/faction? Is is completely singleplayer? Multiplayer where i connect with my friends or one gigantic game that i am apart of like an MMO or is is a mix of them?
I have so many unanswered questions but thats only because this game is so broad and open.

There are factions in the game, each one being in control of a certain section of the universe. You may choose to help out certain factions (like in those dogfights when you can take sides) and they will help you in return (better trading and you can also get AI teammates out in space travel), but you will not belong to any faction or make a real difference. It's mainly just for your benefit, with the the trading and whatnot. There aren't any "cities", but the lore of the game involves an ancient long gone civilization that once had cities, and some of the points of interest on many of the planets will be ruins of their civilization. In these ruins you can find out perhaps what may have happened to them, and you can find blueprints of their technology (jetpacks, plasma guns, etc.).
I was thrilled to find out about this. Turns out there are others who want this sort of gaming experience other than myself. This is what I've been waiting for...
You know, I really like the idea of loneliness or maybe just less intaractions with other players, especially for me since I love games that let you do things by yourself and don't focus on bringing 15 other guys to help you out. BUT, I have a long known friend whom I always play with. Almost every game I have, he has too. And I would be sincerely dissapointed if they don't make a way to spawn with your buddy at your side, or at least make a way to track him through the galaxy. And the way the dev described it (on multiple interviews), about players spawning all across the edge of the galaxy, abou planets being real-sized and about the small possibilites of you even encountering a player gets me worried. It makes me think co-op might be impossible with someone you already know. If anyone has information that I don't about this matter, please let me know! Thanks!

Honestly, this is a game that I've always dreamed of but never actually thought it would happen. I've always loved the idea of striking out on my own, making my own journey and doing whatever I want. I feel like this is the game that will deliver on that. A game where you can explore, fight, craft, and not have tons of people next to you while you do it. This game looks amazing and I will surely invest in it.

Actually I think it's just debuting on ps4 because they haven't pushed to make it on anything else so I mean technically it's a times exclusive but I don't think there's anything contractually binding them to make it for ps4 only, so whenever they decide to create an Xbox one version it will happen.. It's coming out for PS4 because the PS4 is a better gaming system, whereas the XboxOne is a better multimedia system. PS4 is more ready for that shit.
I think both are advanced gaming systems but PS4 is better in the graphics part, when your talking about all around entertainment Xbox wins, no matter what you get both systems are great iv played both its all personal preference, no bias involved here. This game is the next step for indie games, if I may say so. I've always seen Indie games as small, short pieces of art. Like Flower or Journey or Octodad for example. But this is massive. This and Destiny are the two games I am the most excited about, and with games like Order 1886 and Uncharted on the line I think this is quite a unusual thing. So I hope this will get as much attention as it deserves.

I doubt it'll be there forever, it's physically impossibe to plan for a game that could rack up an infinit amount of ships at the bottom of the ocean. But i reckon it would stay there for a while. Maybe it'd vanish if you get yourself a new ship. But i guess we'll just have to see
***** it was said in a different interview something like that wouldn't be seen by other players only really significant things like say if you wiped all life off the planet everyone who went to that planet would see there is no life there and it would tell the player you did that but if you crashed a ship at the bottom of the ocean your machine would remember that and you'll see it but chances are no one else will see it...I hope this helped some

The fact that people are saying it doesnt make sense or that theres nothing to do, no story etc is exactly the reason a game like this needs to be made. I would be happy spending hours exploring the universe and interacting with the growing worlds. Thats because i dont need heavy action and my tastes dont rely on constant shooting and violence. A game like this doesnt need a heavy narrative. The way i see it is that you make your own story, and i expect theyll add new ways to take that further

Personally I think scattering players across the universe is a great idea for an MMO. It makes finding someone specific or any other person in general a lot more exciting and memorable.

I feel like the developers are really underestimating the gamer. I read an article saying that the no man's sky sever will only be able to handle 2-4 players being in the same area at the same time, because the world is so large that they honestly don't believe gamers will ever find each other. But that's not what gamers do, it's in the human natural to seek out others. and so just like any other MMO, I foresee the players creating a center hub of planets to be the inside ring, or place to trade and hang out. This will result in sever break down for the developers.

Some people seem to be upset the story isn't a huge part of the game, but for me that makes the game.
So many games that come out now are restricted to a story and claim to be "open world" or that the player makes the choices. I'm really looking forward to a game where it's solely based around exploration and discovery.

This game would be perfect if it took a bit more from eve online or civ. Specifically with a sovereignty system of some sort. Just imagine getting a group of friends together, flying to some remote planet, and starting your own empire or something. You could build trade hubs by constructing space stations and attaching them to specific planets or moons. Possibly wars or disputes over resources. Player built diplomacy essentially. That, is something I would play for 10+ years. I know this may be unrealistic at the moment, but I hope to find a game like that someday. (fingers crossed for No man's sky and star citizen)

here should be a thing where you can come across 2 or more planets having a war or battle and u can either pick a side, ignore them or destroy them both it would be a rare event with almost as much resources as destroying a space station
Couple of quick questions. Hopefully someone from the game development will answer them or read them..
1) How the hell are the spaceships that small? also, darn fast and powerful for a small aircraft?
2) How the heck are those 'enemies' identified? A little too simplistic?
3) Why is everything orange?
4) How about making this in third person view? I am sure alot of people will appreciate not getting nauseous just to play this.
5) I think that you can show more on how your customization are like? I feel like that will be the crux of this game and it will be great for you guys to set the tone with the initial options.

+Squid Fish You still totally can, its just going to take a while. I think the best course of action for trying to find friends is to start heading towards the center of the universe. The closer you get the more chances you will start running into people and potentially your friends.

+Squid Fish The center of the universe is the "end game" or at least that's what they are hinting at so yhh it will be easier to find people around there but trust me it will be really hard to find it.
I cant wait for this game, this kind of open ended creativity allows the game to evolve into something that couldnt originally be imagined and leads to a unique and beautiful world.

This looks interesting, but I don't know about not having a strong core story/mission. Exploration is cool, and procedurally generated environments/starships/planets/ ect are great... but what is it exactly that keeps you coming back? I feel like the modern gamer is going to get super hyped by this game bc its indie, purchase the game, play for a few hours/days, and then lose interest quickly bc there isn't a story board associated with it.
Who cares about the story man. The gameplay and immersion in the universe are the most important. The multiplayer oriented games are the ones I play the most and It's not the story that makes me come back.

thats great for you, but I value story, and so do a lot of other gamers. What is it that makes me want to play this game after ive explored my 50th planet? You get what im saying? Eventually there has to be a point or else is just a tech demo.

This guy is pretty cagey with his answers mind, and this is the first time for me anyway, hearing about the Atlas symbol. I'm probably way off here, but i can't help but think about the Monolith from 2001: a space odyssey!

Nicholas Isoldi Then I don't think this game is for you man, this is what we call a sandbox game.. Story is usually non-existent in those games.
I always want a game like this, where you has the capacity to explore an entire world and then get inton your ship and fly away to the space to explore other words or planets without loading , finding new species and diferents faunas etc.
So a indie developer that only are 4 guys thought the same and started to make it. Why on hell any big developer didn't think an idea like that? I dont mind it is harder to make look well , im only want what i dream and , this indies developer were inteligents .
