I was laid off at age 50 I've been looking for work for five years, after doing this and that but finding nothing professional. I have dropped out of the work force. The numbers about unemployment being down don't include people like me. Unemployment is not down, unless you can survive on $7.50 an hour at three jobs. I physically cannot handle three jobs but respect those who can.

All my life I have been a productive American, worked, paid taxes and even served in our armed forces....I have been unemployed since January...My unemployment just ended and now, I have no income, no savings, and no assets of any worth...I have a Master's degree which has done me no good...I have a decent amount of debt mostly medical bills...A month after being told in a 1 on 1 with my boss, that people were complaining that I might have PTSD and they're scared of me, I was terminated...Funny, I never threatened anybody, never displayed any violent behaviour and never lost my temper....I did however, quite by accident, discover that my ex father-in-law, works there too....AND he knows I have PTSD....Draw your own conclusions....I have always been a law abiding citizen...BUT I have skills, learned in the military, that could make me very successful pursuing other financial options...Anybody want a black market surgery? 1000 bucks....LOL

Job growth isn't translating into economic growth because the bulk of the jobs being created are minimum wage, part-time work. This jobs crisis is only going to worsen as government policy continues to overwhelmingly favor corporations over the working class. Having a college degree is quickly becoming useless, as every other person now has one, and job requirements include a college degree and impossible-to-meet relevant experience. Whether you got 4 kids, 0 kids; a HS diploma or 2 Masters degrees; whether you're 26 or 56, you should understand that the new economic model is purposefully *designed* to keep you begging for a wage and to see your neighbor as your competitor.

    • @terribletanner805
      @terribletanner805 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

College degrees are a total joke. I've worked several menial jobs and voluntary positions alongside qualified plumbers, mechanics and all sorts of qualified people, who simply cannot find any work. Not to mention, coming out of college, looking for work and on every job description - qualified and entry level - the words "Must have X years experience" are emblazoned under the title. You don't even get a chance to start.
And on top of all that, if you're over 17, you can kiss apprenticeships and government help goodbye.

I don't know where you get these statistics from, but unemployment means someone with no job that is actually looking for one. It doesn't mean someone who doesn't want to work which is most likely added to your calculation. People who aren't looking for work might be someone who is under 14 and cannot legally work or someone who retired.

Why do we all continue to support the companies that don't support us? Stop buying anything that comes from a company that doesn't support American's population by paying a living wage, health benefits, use of local suppliers etc... How long can they survive if we don't support them? Yes I know it's easier said then done. But what would happen if companies started to ask...why are our sales down? Why do we have so many vacant rooms, apartments, cars on the lot, inventory on the shelf... Hitting them in their wallet hurts most and that they listen to!

No direct access to contraceptives. If contraceptives were free and easily accessible, more people will do it and we wouldn't need to worry about abortions or having an unsteady economic system, due to supporting so many families who can't support themselves anymore. There are families who were well to do, but then hard times hit and hit them hard. Don't be so quick to judge, because it can be you someday. You are doing well one day making $5000 to $7000 a month for 6- 10 years and boom! You lose it all except the responsibilities of feeding kids.

This did NOT happen to my parents generation - they were left alone to work until they retired. This is not right and it created a permanent scar on those people and the economy. Is instability what big business wants now? People so distracted that they don't know what is being done to them behind their backs until it's too late. This is what created the middle class in the 1950's and 1960's - job security - that is if you wanted a job you could find a job and most of the time it was full time with benefits. Now everything is crap.

  • @Rickwmc

Since 1964 sixty million U.S. jobs have been computerized, internet-outsourced and H1-B visa in-sourced. The buying power of the U.S. job wage has stagnated since 1968 (47 years ago). Between now and 2100 A.D. one hundred million more jobs will be computerized, internet-outsourced, H1-B-visa in-sourced and robotized. Job destruction is permanent and escalating. And nothing can stop it. Nothing!

Reagan tried to avert this disaster, back in the Eighties. Through the Small Business Assoc, anyone could apply for a government business loan, with the aim at creating a whole new generation of employers. Unfortunately, corporate interests crushed any new small business start-ups, through direct competition. It's well documented, they even made a film: "You've Got Mail"

Right now in America 40% or @5+Million of the illegals in our labor market are Visa overstays, mostly in the Tech Sector in jobs paing between $40,000 - $100,000/yr and every job they have is a job and income an American worker does not have. All those construction, maintenance , cleaning and production jobs use to be held by Americans too, and without the legals they will be again. Defending the prosperity, incomes and opportunities of our Citizens is not xenophobic; its common sense and the right of all Nations.
We must as a Nation start looking out for the interests of American Citizens and understand that defending out citizens is a public good ... Illegal Immigration and imported Visa Labor does not help our nation, it harms us. Illegal immigration is not a victim-less crime - Our Citizens pay the price. No Business has a right to cheap labor. Every American has a right to be treated fairly in our own nation; No immigrant or Illegal has a right to be here at all.

BTW, before you buy into the old they can't afford to pay more because .... You need to know that many of the business owners are not only paying a very low wage they are doing so while they pay themselves huge salaries. How is it acceptable that your boss earns $ 250,000 a year pays you $ 9.00 an hour and somehow he can't afford to pay you more? Are you kidding me. People need to understand the system as it really works and stop buying into the nonsense they're told. It's not taxes or wages that cause these problems. It's greed.

All countries have some unemployment, most have some form of social welfare programmes, and all have those people that are unemployable. Those unemployable include many with physical or mental disabilities as well as those few who simply do not want to work. However, if a society does not have that safety net to help those desperate and in need, people will often turn to crime through a matter of necessity and that in turn impacts on society as those crimes, often petty thefts, are usually against those in the lower socio-economic groups. No country has a perfect social welfare programme, but in general, European and Scandinavian countries, plus countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Canada look after the disadvantaged people in their societies much better than the USA does. Many of those these countries also tend to have programmes such as Free Hospital or Free Heath care, and Government Funded Universal Old-Age Pensions for their citizens as well. Americans may term such ideas "socialist" as they are alien to them, but it is the measure of a caring society that that a country recognises the need to provide and care for their most vulnerable members, which are generally the children, the aged, solo parents, the unemployed, and those sick or disabled.

    • @atwaterpub
      @atwaterpub 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is because the rate of unemployment is determined by a government more concerned with profit than human beings. There can easily be total employment if there is social will. The fact is that everyone in America is trained by the school system to be selfish and uncaring, by worrying about their own grades. By the time they get to be adults, they care for nobody and nothing except money and success. They just walk around homeless people dying on the sidewalks of the modern cities. There is no LOVE in America.

The job losses are permanent. The reason is simple. As former World Bank economist Joseph Stiglitz has explained, our society is now dominated by a rentier elite. These are individuals and entities that by their tax advantages claim a higher and higher proportion of the wealth others produce. The process called "rent-seeking."
Rent-seeking can be defeated but only by a change in how government raises its revenue. We need to move to a system of taxation that raises far more revenue from the rent of land and land-like assets.
Many economists and others have written extensively on the subject besides Joseph Stiglitz. In the 19th century this reform became the basic goal of a social movement led by Henry George.

You should do a spill on the jobs that are actually posted by most corporations that never get filled. As they search for what seems to be some unrealistic expectations. If its that specialized in requirements then the pool of possible employees will continue to go down.

    Poem titled Beginning West.
    Beginning West I wandered,
Through trials & tribulations in all the days long,
And always through towns, & the sight of people,
Urged on with hope of a young's man luck,
I believed I carried truth, faith & charity.
The mix & mingle of a proper life,
And did pretend to know my spoken language, with plan.
And looked ahead, only I imagined seen
    Of what there was before.
The path too much like aimless life,
Where my thinking comes & goes with the seeing,
Coming on by it, & one part is sore
    From looks having touched it.
And again this spell did break: once more.
    I watched the city exposed,
And gazed on ahead, but to no gain
Of all else had been seen
Like one on a last quest
To walk in fear & dread,
But soon there came a thought in me,
    No warning, no alarm made:
    Its clarity was not here.
The meaning of life must be on ahead.
    There must be enough time.

LIQUIDSNAKEz28 .....I've noticed your name on the better educational videos like I try to find too. I agree with much of what you say. (It's impossible to agree on every detail and unimportant too). The fact that your comments stand out among thousands I've read is proof of how the daily bombarding of "news" really teaches so little truth and the masses are believing it. I know I'm here to learn and I also easily can say most people are here to blab their such useless and flawed opinions. Naturally, this is not surprising since the media moguls with all their high paid 'spin' advisors easily wouldn't fail. Its simple to understand since I have invested thousands of hours studying how things are presented and the details keep repeating themselves as they should. Sales tactics are so easily successful because so few know them. (There is no bachelors degree for "legally yet immoraly deceptive sales techniques" for a reason!)

***** And wages have not kept up with inflation either. In 1970 a person made 14.000 a year and bought a 3 bedroom home for 38.000. Try doing this now. Inflation is caused by the Central Banks creation of currency and by the banks creation of out of control loans (which is currency creation as well) Currency looses it's value and people cannot afford to buy cars and homes...........only with more out of control loans=DEBT. And all this debt is killing growth. All politicians are corrupted.....they work for the big banks and big corporations and not the people.

There are so many reasons why (I believe) we are struggling. It all starts as kids. We are all told we are special and can do anything. For a lot of us we don't find out until after college that we are just another regular Joe. As for college, a college degree is so watered down. More people have degrees now so it does not make you stick out. People are working longer. Many people in their 70s are still working so they are in essence holding onto a job that trickles down to a 22 year old being unemployed. Then add all the computers and machinery that replaced actual people. Government is the biggest problem. Just all the waste and no help to the working class. You might hate Trump, but the reason he got elected is because Obama and Bush destroyed everything.

t206kid Many of we old folks are still working because we have to. Our pensions and retirements are cut, cut, cut some more, then go under. We have nobody to fall back on, like parents. Many of us are supporting adult children who, if we quit and gave them our job, the company would cut the salary down to a tenth and we'd be on the street together. I'm not optimistic. I'm hoping to die in the saddle, leave enough for a private burial, and break even. Leave no trace behind.

In the 1970's the personal computer appeared allowing U.S. employers to fire millions of white males replacing them with women and minorities for lower wages. In the 1980's the employers colluded with their banker buddies to offer credit cards, mortgage loans and student loans INSTEAD of raising wage buying power. In the 1990's the internet was perfected allowing U.S. employers to outsources tens of millions of jobs to India, China and other countries. In the 2000's employers cut hours for surviving employees. Now in the 2010's the A-I robot is coming robotizing every last job on this planet by 2100 A.D. Economic hell is coming.

It will, my generation has no savings is in tens of thousands of dollars of debt per person. Jobs are terribly paid, people don't get raises like they used too, when the economy needs millennials money too run, we are all doomed, because they have no money and it's not going to change. My generation for most of us we will never get to own homes. Millennials have less sex, have less kids and less relationships in general. They aren't pair bonding, they aren't forming family's. Large numbers of them are living off the scraps left off their parents generation just living in their houses. The government forces you to pay for your own property! So even if houses are left too millennials the governments will likely take a bunch of them. And the demographics are just abysmal. Growth is stagnating and to top it all off they want to food the country with tons of people from other country's.
