Hi Anirudh, really enjoy your videos giving a very pragmatic perspective on exchange of thoughts and ideas which hardly find any mainstream mentions or a highly black and white no nuanced analysis . it would indeed help to understand the entire medieval period, not just through bit sized videos but more of a deeper dive borrowing from your various videos and more. Maybe an idea for future videos? Maybe a 1-1 dialogue with another historian for a couple of hours?
FINALLY, such a pleasure to see Aniruddh on screen! I have been a GREAT fan of your podcasts and have been preaching ( ;) ) about it too. Cannot wait to see more videos!
In Chinese Buddhism (Han buddhism), anyone as long as anyone opens wisdom (let go of desire). He can become Buddha. There is a saying in China: " 放下屠刀立地成佛 A butcher becomes a Buddha the moment he drops his cleaver. "人人都是佛 Everyone is a Buddha. 滿街都是聖人The streets are full of saints.". In history, many ancient Chinese have become Buddhas. So many Buddha statues of different images in China are those ancient Chinese (most of them are monks).
Yea the one who destroyed thousands of Buddhist institutions and burnt down heap of buddhist research papers in Tibet and China is now potraying itself as a patronage of Buddhism these days. Knowing that there is no separation between Tibet and buddhism, these manaics are trying the Dirtiest level of stunt to suppress buddhism to squash the Tibet
Indian monks probably arrived in China via the sea route as early as the 2nd or 3nd century. Though Vajrapodi had his influence, tantric ideas in China didn't really take off until after the Mongol invasion and the introduction of Tibetan Buddhism. Another monk, Bodhidharma, also South Indian and arrived in China via the sea route, arrived before Vajrapodi sometime before 478, was arguably more influential culturally in China.
Nice presentation. Citing at least a few key original and contextual resources, literary or otherwise, especially to support any sweeping comments (such as at 6:17 which is fine for summarizing and believed to be true), would be very helpful.
True. Most of ancient ruler had secular or pularist look for religions, Buddhist kings like Ashoka and kanishka. Both of them had patronized several non Buddhist activities in their reign.
First Buddhist temple in china was constructed during 1st BCE. Aniruddh kanasetti is so hellbent on denying Asoka that He can't accept anything related to Buddhism during those times. Buddhism reached to China through silk route. And anyone should get credit for that is Asoka because under him Buddhism spread to Gandhara, Persia, oldest Asokavadana is present in China not in Sri Lanka or Burma and we can understand why.
That old ashokavadana is also a translation of the srilankan version.... all most all ancient budhdhist scriptures are translations from sri lanka.... lol

The presentation is quite good, but he should differentiate the Tantra practice in the Chinese Tang Court from the subsequent so called highest yoga Tantra ( left wing Tantra).
Hey so Anirudh, can you utter one sentence without sounding condescending and an irritating know it all??? your constant need to disagree with everything and put out a counterview is very annoying and cringey
Can you do an episode on why Buddhism receded from India despite the heavy pollination of Tantric ideas between Shaivism and Buddhism
Buddhism entered China via the Chinese made Silk Road, which facilitated economic, political, and religious contact of different cultures with China.
