- What's going on Noobs? It's time to talk about our first boss from the first Hollow Knight DLC, Hidden Dreams: Grey Prince Zote. This is, of course, the only boss who could hold such an incredibly important spot in our Hollow Knight Boss Discussion series, obviously, because Grey Prince Zote is clearly the most glorious of bosses in all of Hollow Knight.
NOTE: WE ALSO NEED MONARCH WINGS TO ACCESS THIS FIGHT. From the wiki: "To access the boss, the player must have saved both Bretta and Zote and have defeated him in the Colosseum of Fools. The player also needs to have the Monarch Wings in order for the basement to open."
I did not know this and it's such an oddball requirement. I'm sorry Noobs for my lack of information.

Have you ever played Xenoblade Cronicles 2? GPZ would be doing the Jin thing where you fully destroy him but then there comes a cutscene where the heros or in this case the knight is being obliterated.
Well with plot armour a character can't die without an insanely overdramatic buildup, that's my whole point

Technically speaking, you fight him in a fanfiction world where he’s perceived as the hero and you’re the villain, accompanied by his heroic sounding theme.
Every time you beat him he gets more and more plot armour until the writers finally give up and kill off the protagonist
You know that he has more titles than that. Your monitor just isn't large enough.
Well, let's be real, Grey Prince Zote clearly deserves infinite praise. ;)

I have a theory as to why zote deals more damage than the radiance:
Dream bosses tend to embody the creatures dreams of how powerful they THINK they are. This is why failed champion deals 2 masks of damage and is extremely fast. With the armor, the maggot thought he was unstoppable, so when we faught his dreams, he was much harder.
You see every time we save zote, or beat him in the coliseum of fools, he grows increasingly more denying of our power, and his ego inflates. We are basically fighting zote’s ego. Every time we defeat him he paints a better picture of himself in his head in hopes of one day defeating us. Bretta notices this rivalry and finally discovers that he Is just an ego driven fool and leaves.

@@mikerice868 It's Beretta dream. She created a statue of her new loved one with this dreams in her head. So it's rather her vision of the Zote under the influence of love. The hunter’s journal confirms this.
Statue also explains why he stayed so strong even when she was disappointed in him.
P.s. Also imagine how our Knight looks in her dreams before Zote appears in the Dirthmouth with his trophy :D

Although you touched on it. I do feel the need to emphasis how BROKEN a shaman stone enhanced flukenest shot is against zote. Even if you don't have perfect accuracy, the moron will ussually run face first into the rest of the spell, dealing the full 144 points of damage this attack promises. Meaning 12 shots brings down zote from full if nothing else is used. Combine this with the weaversong combo, and you can focus exclusively on dodging and looking for opportunities to shove a ton of flukes in zotes face. And it also means you can keep your distance.

i went the method of shaman stone abyss shriek on him, whenever he stands still to summon flys or balloons u can hit him with 3 of them and smack him for a solid 360 damage, tho flukenest does sound better for spamming him tho this comment was made b4 the nerf iirc
One thing to mention: In order to access this fight, you also need to have acquired the Monarch Wings. It's unlikely you don't have it if you did everything else, but I did run into that problem and had to use the Hollow Knight wiki to find out why Bretta's basement was inaccessible.

Oh wow, I didn't know how elaborately the changes between earlier stages of Zote fights were - I thought it would just be the scaling damage and health but clearly not quite the case!
Believe it or not, I actually ended up coming up with lore to justify how these 'upgrades' occur - the Grey Dream may have been spawned by Bretta, but Zote keeps it functional even after Bretta herself becomes disconnected from it; the Dream Bretta may once have been her avatar and way to observe the fight, but in later versions is just a hollow artiface for Zote's dream to perform at - much like how Real Zote continues to talk at the empty space where Bretta used to be.
And Bretta is creative, while Zote decidedly is not, anymore at least while stuck in his 57 ways. So while she is still engaged and 'feeding' the Grey Dream, Zote's upgrades are likewise creative, with extra moves and creations spawned to aid him. However, her final 'contribution' is as her image of The Prince is mostly diminished, and she tires of thinking of a new way to empower him - so she just makes him twice as strong instead. And when she proceeds to leave Dirtmouth (and disconnects from the Grey Dream), Zote proceeds to take full control of the dream, if perhaps unconsciously so (tho the same applies to when Bretta had control too).
But because Zote is uncreative, he effectively just copies what came last, making himself and his fragments ever stronger without ever breaking out of the stasis of his current set of moves. It's also possible that the moves stop going faster after Zote 6 because he literally isn't capable of processing his dreamform at any quicker of a speed. Furthermore, Zote notably stops gaining health after the fourth fight - suggesting perhaps that Bretta was actively reinforcing his power in some way with every reincarnation, which also grinds to a halt with her presence gone.
Hope this extremely detailed theory on a very minor piece of the lore is good! It's 3:30AM as I type this. :P
That is a fantastic theory subprogram! I have heard a simpler version of it (I think somewhere else within this guide's comments but I cannot remember) but I love all of the detail you've added to this and I think it really does help explain how the fight continues on after Bretta leaves. And thanks to you being so detailed, it covers why Grey Prince Zote progresses like he does: going from gaining health, speed, damage, and attacks while Bretta's around to just gaining damage (and maybe some speed) because it's only Zote now.

God, preach to the choir, my dude. I have an unnatural hatred for this fight. I gave up after around Zote 5 because I was getting sick of fighting him over and over again.
Granted it can be my impatience that's not letting me get good enough to beat this fight, but I stand strong on the idea of no-hitting a boss being an optional feat, which is why I'm so glad they bumped the fight limit to progress Bretta's story to 4 instead of 10, because the reason I got so angry fighting him was because I really only care about Bretta.
Great video once again. Despite my hatred for the fight, seeing this video gives me a little hope that I could get up to 10 victories with enough patience.
Also as a side, the Shadow Slam attack seems to be slightly predictive. When you hear his scream from above, when I fought against him, his voice was louder and usually shifted to one of my headphone speakers if he was a certain distance to the left or right. That's about the only way I can see it being predicted, but it's not exactly something you predict when you're using his telegraph to figure it out I suppose.
Thanks Four Eyes. I am also happy they shifted Bretta's story to end after 4 because it does get crazy in those higher versions of Zote. I totally understand the frustration. And thank you for the compliment. I do think you can defeat Zote 10. I know I used a lot of my recommendations when I went back to get footage of me defeating Zote 10 without the Joni's Blessing glitch and I actually defeated him without getting hit! I think that's the first boss in all of Hollow Knight I've done that with! :D
Regarding the Shadow Slam: that is really interesting. I am going to pay way more attention to my headphone audio from now because I did not notice that but I wouldn't put it past Team Cherry to include some audio cues like that. However, what I meant by "predictive" is whether Grey Prince Zote is predicting where we will be and slamming down there rather than just choosing a spot where we were when he slams down ("tracking"). But that is still some wicked cool information Four Eyes. :D

Apologies as well if this was noted and I missed it in the video, but one minor trick you can do for some starting soul is to use the dream nail on Zote as he appears. With the Dreamwielder charm you can pull off two dream nail swings with exact timing (which is tricky to do and not consistent). Without Dreamwielder you want to double jump before you hit the floor and immediately use the dream nail for one swing.
Abyss Shriek can be handy to clear multiple adds as they spawn (sometimes you'll hit Zote incidentally) but if you start it too late it will leave you open to be hit. The adds do have brief mercy invulnerability so using Abyss Shriek early will just knock them away. But if you're doing a challenge run it can help keep the adds under control.
Lastly, unless you are doing a very difficult challenge run you really don't want vengeful spirit for this fight. The winged and hopper zotelings will not be killed with one vengeful spirit (they take four old nail swings to kill and vengeful spirit hits for the equivalent of three old nail swings).

I guess if we're going to use Vengeful Spirit, we'd definitely need Shaman Stone. And essentially, we'll always want to use Shade Soul if we can. Cool. :)
Quite so. The only reason you'd have vengeful spirit for Grey Prince Zote is if you're specifically trying to make it as hard as possible. I would highly recommend having shade soul. I was able to beat GPZ1 with the old nail/vengeful spirit, but keeping the adds under control was the hardest part of the fight and the fight lasted a very long time.
Oh my gosh that sounds like a hellish challenge CrankyTemplar. Way to go with defeating Zote 1 with those low stats though. :D
I am incredibly late that the chance of this being seen is less then one percent, but here's a completely random thing I noticed about this fight.
It's slight, but during the 'Shadow Slam Attack', his scream actually sort of shows where he's going to land, at least for me.
I wore headphones through my entire playthrough, and whenever Zote would land on the right side of The Knight, his scream would only be at the right ear of the headphones, and vice versa.
I doubt that this would really help anyone, but goodness, those extra seconds really helped me in the later fights

Haha, it is really cool, yeah. And I guess I'm just the fun facts guy today, lol.
Protip I had - for zote 10 and you have 9 masks use fury of the fallen. Take one hit from zote or 2 hits from the minions and with strength equipped and pure nail you do around 50 dmg. Focus on dodging attacks and you'll get through him fast.
fought him nearly 10 times and your method worked. i beat him so quickly i was wondering how. other methods got him stunned phase 4 times. your method got him to 1 stun phase and after that death. ty for the advice..lol
Howling wraiths is actually a great spell for this fight. When Zote starts spawning zotelings, simply use it right below where they spawn. They have a small period of invincibility but if you wait for them to go through the dark burst thing, you can catch both types of zotelings in the air and automatically kill them. I did all 10 zotes with a sharpened nail only, so automatically killing the zotelings with howling wraiths was pretty much key in keeping them under control. When they take like 4 hits to kill, it's very hard to deal with them if you don't kill them immediately like this.

GPZ is skilled in the art of "If I don't know what the hell I'm doing you sure don't either"
I _think_ that Grey Prince Zote's shadow slam attack is predictive...a little. I think that he falls where we would be if we continued walking in whatever direction we're moving when he goes through the floor (directly above us if we aren't moving). However, since we are often changing direction as he falls in expectation of the shockwave that doesn't arrive, figuring out exactly which spot that is can be tricky.
As for his progression, I expect that it takes the form of the dream gradually being transferred over from Bretta to Zote. While she admires this great warrior at first, she eventually moves on, leaving a Zote that didn't realize how much he appreciated her until she was already gone (not because he loves her, but because she gave him the admiration he thinks he deserves). So it goes from Bretta's image of being protected by this big, strong, "graceful" knight to Zote's self portrait of himself as an *_INVULNERABLE GOD_* who gets what he wants, which is, in this case, Bretta. Zote 1 is Bretta's image of Zote, but as she loses faith in him, this image blends with Zote's image of Zote, until Zote 10, which is how Zote thinks of himself, and when Bretta has finally, fully lost any interest in him.
In short, Grey Prince Zote is powered by Zote's bottomless ego.

Also, I love this theory about GPZ's increasing power. And it totally makes sense from a lore perspective because Bretta leaves by Zote 4. How in the world are we still fighting more Zote's? Sure, Bretta is still in that dream pocket but that could now be Zote's dream, to still have his adoring fan there. Your theory is so good! :D
A few things:
1. I think that the "artificial difficulty" that you mentioned, that being the added damage, wasn't intended to make the boss harder. But to make it dumber lol. As in, not to take the fight seriously.
2. This boss once you get to 7-10 is basically just the radiant version you would do in the pantheon. So it makes good practice.
3. Because he is gonna hit so hard its basically radiance. You might as well overcharm and use the best charms for spells and nail.
Grey Prince Zote was the last boss I had to beat on Radiant. Just beat him today. Thank you SO MUCH for your guides on all the bosses!! Now I finally got that sweet statue! :)

can we take a moment to appreciate the merciless sass the hunter uses in his journal?
Regarding the Shadow slam attack or w/e, it's based on audio cues. If you're wearing headphones you can hear if he falls down on your left, right, or on top of you. You have to have good ears to do it flawlessly every time though, but at least there is a cue.

I just immediately turn around go the opposite direction when I see he uses that attack. If I continue in the same direction, he always lands directly on me, but if I go the opposite way he lands far.
Gosh this video really did wonders for me. I was struggling with him and had no idea how to dodge that flail attack but I flew up into the corner like you showed and I got through it! I also switched out some of my charms for that one that lets you swing your nail rapidly and it helped me so so much. Thanks, dude!

The reason GPZ spits out zotelings is because he’s LITERALLY FULL OF HIMSELF LMAO
Invincible Fearless Sensual Mysterious Enchanting Vigorous Diligent Overwhelming Gorgeous Passionate Terrifying Beautiful Powerful Grey Prince Zote is a ridiculously long name for a boss fight
Seems like a pretty good Charm setup for Radiant bosses too... with two exceptions. See, RADIANT bosses kill you instantly no matter what, so abilities that increase or activate on low health (or recovery) are useless... so might as well increase your Soul gathering ability or enlist some assistants. Also, the ONLY downside of being "Overcharmed" is taking double damage... but you're ALREADY a OHKO, so that's not a concern anymore is it? So the "last charm" should NOT be a measly one-pointer, but rather a heavy hitter so you can effectively use more Charm slots than you actually have.
That's very true ShadwSonic. It's one of the things I like about the Radiant fights. It's not often overcharming has no drawback and it opens up so many more charm combinations. :)
Gotta just adore the voice over for Zote, too friggin funny
One thing that helped me for a few Zote fights was combining Fury of the Fallen and Grubberfly's Elegy, especially with Quick Slash and Fragile Strength.
If you can plan your heals or take just the right amount of damage, you'll be left at one health, activating Fury of the Fallen and powering up the Elegy... You'll be as fragile as a maggot but you'll be dealing hits like a primal aspid
Shouldn't take hits on purpose of course, but it makes taking those hits less of a downer.

Heck yes! I'm a recent subscriber since I just recently bought Hollow Knight. It's now one of my favorite games! Because I struggle a little on the bosses I've been binging all of your videos! They are so entertaining and very helpful!
Also I've heard there are 12 charm notches but I only have 11 and can't for the life of me find the last one...
Have you fought Troupe Master Grimm? He gives one. There is also one in the Fog Canyon, in a semi-secret room located above the room you meet Cornifer in. (Not the same room as Cornifer, a different one.)

The bosses are really hard the first time around, but most of them are really easy during your second playthrough. I think that's what people meant.
Beating up waifu stealer isn't "optional", it's an emotional and moral necessity.

With his all RNG patterns like butt slams, tail dance drop, spamming minions and baloon mine This is the hardest boss in game beside radiant markoth.
This is my favorite boss and I've grinded it quite a bit. Here are some tips for people replaying before silk song or going through the game again. We've had a lot of time to figure this boss out in 4 years.
1. Consider using a full spell build, with stuff like Shaman Stone, spell twister, Quick slash, soul catcher, and in radiant overcharm with soul eater. This makes step 2 even better. If you are sick of being told to use ddark, I'd atleast recommend a heal build if you're struggling with the boss, but nail builds can still be quite good, albeit harder to use.
2. Learn how to use descending dark to deal with problematic attacks and unpredictable situations. Zotes shadow dive input reads, meaning if you dash too early, he will land on top of you with little you can do. With descending dark, you simply wait until you hear zote start to fall, use it and then hit him with your nail as he's getting up. Another example is the flail, with a nail build pogoing there takes lots of practice as zote will fall to the ground and if you try to Pogo as he does that you'll miss and take damage. Instead simply doing 3 Pogo's, double jumping and ddark as he falls makes this attack free.
3. Do not be greedy. Greedy is relative to the boss you're fighting. Zote loves to walk forward to reposition himself after an attack. This means that you can't just swing at zote until he does another attack you need to react to, you need to know exactly how you'll punish attacks. Usually with slams you can get two, and when he falls to the ground after shadow slam/flail, you can get three hits. Don't bother practicing any flashy strats, IE abyss shrieking him or trying to him him during his short jump attacks.
4. Notice patterns in what attacks are hitting you and change your strats.
5. Know what you're getting into. From the perspective of boss mastery, this is one of the absolute hardest in the game. While your first zote kill in bretta's basement probably didn't take as long as NKG or PV, to actually master this boss is much harder than either of those two and radiant GPZ took me more time than those two put together (1 hour for radiant NKG, 4 for PV, 8 for zote).
The first time I fought him I died so fast, and as human nature would have it I got pissed really fast. All of that Rage went away and I burst into laughter as soon as he fell out of the top yelling like that...
Huge opportunity missed to call the ghosts Zote-Ghost, like zeitgeist. Come on now...
As a dude who's beaten all forms of this boss including godmaster. This boss is definitely frustrating. Some attacks feel luck based and others overwhelming. This is on my least enjoyable bosses and the fact that completing it meant on a safe file I have to beat it 13 times intimidates me each time I consider replaying. Also the quest ending leaves me sad with another npc leaving hollownest.

Shadow Slam and the fact that he leaks void when you somehow beat this GOD AMONG MEN! Is proof that Zote is of the void - he is a vessel.
I think the shadow slam randomly targets an area near your location and has a higher chance of landing directly on you

I HIGHLY recommend Nailmaster's Glory replacing Quick Slash.
It only takes up one charm slot as opposed to Quick Slash's three, and using the Cyclone Slash whenever Zote starts spewing Zotelings is INCREDIBLY effective. You can stun max health Zote in just a few Cyclones, plus a spell or two. You can use the remaining two notches for Unbreakable/Lifeblood Heart, Sharp Shadow, or whatever else you may find useful.

Kinda surprised you didn't talk about the nail arts/charged attacks at all. I always had equipped the nail master's glory charm and only used charged attacks to fight him, especially the cyclone/spin attack (one thing the game doesn't tell you is that while spinning you can keep pressing the attack button to make the cyclone attack last longer and deal more damage)

There are always going to be tactics that end up not being discussed, otherwise some of these videos could be nearly an hour long. xD
And that is true: mashing the attack button extends Cyclone Slash. :)

Grey Prince Zote's shadow slam attack predicts where you are going as soon as he enters the ground, meaning that if you stay still while he enters the ground then move away as soon as there is no trace of him on the screen, he will not land on you.
I believe his AI uses a "shoot where they will be" type of thing

Also, I have founded a very useful move for zotes shadow slam, it basically anules its danger and makes it the best opportunity for damage, when zote does his shadow slam, stay in place and usedesolate dive just before he lands to avoid the shockwaves and leave zote completely unprotected

In regards to Grey Prince Zote's Shadow Slam Attack, I thought that it was unpredictable and random (and therefore "bullsh*t") for a looooong time. But after a million of my attempts, I noticed that it IS somewhat predictable.
The ways I dealt with it is this:
1.Stand still after he vanishes and he should fall directly on top of you, giving you the chance to Shadow Dash away in either direction after you spot him.
2. Run in the direction you want him to fall from and then Shadow Dash in the opposite direction at the right time.
Both of these worked consistently for me as his Shadow Slam Attack seems to target the spot where you will be if you move in one direction. This is why he aims directly for you if you don't move, because there is no movement for him to predict.
I hope this experience is accurate and helpful for anyone else struggling with this like so many of us have.
I can see Grubberfly's Elegy being useful on Zote 10 if you pair it with Fury of the Fallen since Zote will knock you down to 1 hp in a single hit it reactivates due to Fury and you still benefit from the damage boost.
True. If I was a better player, I'd use that setup all the time because the damage boost from Fury of the Fallen is huge.
This boss ended so many of my Pantheon of Hallownest runs to the point where I’m convinced that the biggest mistake of my life was saving zote

A bit late to the party, but you might actually want to consider Overcharming for Zote 8-10. Reason being, you're gonna take 6-8 masks already. So double damage just turns a two shot into a one shot. As you mentioned, you simply can't heal enough to make up the damage fast enough to let you take another hit. So while it's a risky strategy, it's one that lets you take him on with some incredibly powerful charm combos, such as Quick Slash + Strength + Shaman Stone + Flukenest. This combo allows quick strikes as you maneuver around Zote, and the extremely damaging combo of strikes + flukenest while you have an opening. The reason people recommend Flukenest is because if every fluke manages to make contact, it's the single highest damaging attack in the entire game. Zote is such a thicc lad that if you're close to him, every fluke should make contact. Thus mashing attack and spell while he for example summons ghosts can yield massive amounts of burst damage.
That's true: overcharming is a viable option against later versions of GPZ. I mean, might as well go for broke. :)
I am on Zote #5 right now and I can agree with you that Zote Sprint and Zote Dash (Flail attack) are his most powerful moves. It is very hard to move out of the way when it happens.

I cheated like half the phases with hive blood Joni blessing and unbreakable strength. Once it took two hits to take me down with and without Joni blessing I used unbreakable strength, shamans stone, spell twister and sprint master. Overall I really like the boss minus his godly sense of changing directions to hit you.

This is late but the Shadow Slam targets infront of you. I don't exactly know when it's decided were he falls infront of you, but it definately catches you if you dash forward. Once you hear him falling dash in the opposite direction. Nice vid btw, really enjoyed it.

I know I haven't played this game or beat Zote 10 but to me having the ability to take only one hit and not be able to heal within a stagger. I would forgo the extra health in favor of maximizing my DPS. The only way to win a war of attrition is to end it before it ends you. I haven't played the game so I don't know what exactly would be needed to do this sooo... yeah.
Yeah, that's a good strategy against Zote 10 and there are several ways to implement it. :)
I already beated his 10 forms and his radiant variant, but I still watched through this whole video, learned nothing new, but was mildly interested :)

This is the hardest boss for me. He moves weird and unpredictably so I can't telegraph his moves.
