    Kudos to the local govt for preserving and maintaining these century old houses...there's also houses like these in taal or agoncillo batangas where you can also buy the famous knife called balisong

    Spanish-era towns in the Philippines were patterned after the European style-- government buildings (ayuntamiento), church, and school, built around a plaza, with the houses of the town's more prominent families radiating outward. The marketplace would not be far away. The roads were characteristically narrow.

      Also unlike many old towns in the country, old places in the North weren't destroyed by Japanese bombs during WW2

    Never been to Vigan but I heard when I was in school that the provinces in the far north of the Philippines is super hot, like Ilocos, Vigan, etc. I don't know about Batanes, the typhoon capital of the Philippines. I'm in my 70's now so I just watch your vlogs to see the different parts of the Philippines. Haven't had tinubong before. That ukoy looks very hard. Careful with your nice teeth. Keep up the good work showing us old people the Philippines.

    All of the major cities of the Philippines used to look like Vigan. Sadly most of the colonial-era buildings were destroyed in World War 2. And everyone modernized the buildings with concrete rather than restore the old buildings afterwards. But you can still see traces of the old architecture in Intramuros for example, or some scattered buildings in Iloilo or Cebu, etc. Exceptions are newer cities like Baguio which didn't exist until the American period.

    • @rlhouse3635
      @rlhouse3635 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is sad to hear that they had to modernize the cities and replace the old architecture with concrete buildings. Perhaps part of the problem was due to the lack of knowledge and skills to restore old historical houses. I hope the Philippine government does something about it.

    • @AngryKittens
      @AngryKittens ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rlhouse3635 The reason is more complicated than that. It was post-War. People needed to reconstruct quickly. So they just demolished ruined old buildings and built completely new ones with concrete over them. But yes, it is sad how the government pays very little to no attention on heritage buildings. Aside from tourist spots. Unlike in Europe for example, where historical buildings are protected by law from demolition or too much renovation.

    • @SusieinthePhilippines
      @SusieinthePhilippines  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have loved to see how these historical buildings mix with modern things! Still happy to see at least some preserved areas

    • @bmona7550
      @bmona7550 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AngryKittens It was also because the Philippine government was an American colony but the US gave independence after the war. The necessary funding to rebuild we didn't really recieve because the US prioritized in helping the restoration of the bombed cities in Europe. We got some financial support but just not enough. With that in mind the new and young Philippine goverment had to do what they had to do. They did rebuild Intramuros and some areas in old Manila at least but even that took decades. The country was really decimated in WWII as it was the battle ground in the Asia Pacific region and many Filipinos felt like they needed to move on, it was too painful. Many prominent Filipino-Spanish migrated to other countries and never really looked back. With less of them, the more the colonial houses became irrelevant and obselete in most of the country.
