I really like the way the progression works in zomboid. How you go from living on scavenged food and gear, in the towns, to moving into the woods, foraging and farming, is so cool.
In my opinion it’s kind of the other way around. Depends on your character obviously but I generally run to the wilderness at first to improve my survival skills and only once I have some combat skills, fitness and whatnot do I move back into town with my van to kick some zeds in the dirt and reestablish civilization as a one-man Republic of Dave type of democratically elected leader.
@@indeed1881 This gives me a great idea, I could fence off a small part of the city, say 2 or 3 houses and then dress up a few mannequins to be my loyal subjects. While I get to play president daddy.
Personally, stick traps are the best as long as you have a good amount of twine. You can forage for worms to bait them so you are not using food and I have had good luck catching birds. Unless you leave them for too long they rarely break, and if they do, you get your twine back. Have had good luck even mid November.
I care about the Strength gains boost from Protein. I used to rely a lot on Stick Traps, when Small Bird Meat had its own Protein value that was particularly high. Combining it with Cabbage or Potato worked perfectly. With the recent changes though, it's no longer a particularly efficient source of Protein. But also with more recent changes, you actually have to worry about getting too much protein because Calorie consumption increased, but Protein consumption wasn't. Stick Traps are best for Hunger because it's convenient.
After someone went digging through the game code and brought this to my attention, it looks like the wiki is actually based on Build 40 and hasn't been updated for Build 41. These are now the catch percentages for traps in B41: RABBITS Trap Cage = 40 Trap Snare = 30 Trap Box = 30 Trap Crate = 30 SQUIRRELS Trap Cage = 40 Trap Snare = 30 Trap Box = 25 Trap Crate = 30 So, it looks like crates are still the best until the Trap Cage, but the cage does now increase catch percentage by 10%.
awesome video as usual, but i've been thinking about the trap percentages.. might sound counterintuitive, but having the 2nd tier trap favor rabbits (the better meat source) over squirrels, that might mean a higher average meat generation.. i dont think it would be noticeable until you have something like 100 catches, and i'm also probably not able to throw the right kind of math at this :
So, on build 41.68, I don't have the plain starting Trap Crate, but I read the magazine for the Box and have that. Are the crates no longer craftable immediately / need a magazine?

Building from the ground up is incredibly difficult, you're going to be up against communities that have existed for a long time already. You need to be doing something completely unique, and then advertise whatever that is. It might not be what you want to hear having put in so much work, but unless you have an existing community to bring to the table, or an audience that already supports you, you're just going to have an incredibly tough time drawing people to a server; especially if it's whitelisted like many RP servers are.

Okay question- am I stupid or did I just miss something? I learned the trap crate recipe from a VHS but for some reason can’t find where to even make it
trapping at beginner level is frustating and some of the materials to make the trap are rares (twine, wires). I have walled a big area between the construction site and fancy restaurant on riverside and go through a lot of cabbages until I find the exact time I need to check my traps (6-8am). Then now it no longer catch a thing again. However, I feel trapping will be more profitable than fishing in the long run since fishing need unrenewable materials (unless spear fishing, which is low catch rate) and the nutrition on rabbit is just too good to pass.
I actually have a question for you; is trapping season dependent? I've not caught a squirrel or rabbit since before December, and can only seemingly catch small birds in the dead of winter. I just want to know if I'm having rotten luck or if it's intended gameplay
Sounds like rotten luck to me, I've had no trouble catching birds or rabbits throughout the first 3 months of gameplay on a standard session. I wouldn't be surprised if winter reduces catch rates though.
Kinda newbie here, I would like to know if it's possible to live only with foraging and trapping (maybe fishing too). I mean, can you forage baits? I wouldn't like to depend on agriculture since I'm playing as a nomad.

That seems odd, I wanna say that might be related to the bait itself rather than the traps? Perhaps the bait you're using is getting used up and then it's trying to use that bait rather than looking for another type?
