- "My Cup Runneth Over" from I DO! I DO! performed by Mary Martin and Robert Preston on the show's national tour in February 1969. This sound system recording is believed to have been made at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit, where Martin was stricken with diverticulitis during the run and had to be hospitalized. The run at the Fisher was scheduled to continue through March 8, but the final performance was on Friday, February 21. The next engagement, in Columbus, Ohio, and the entire rest of the tour was canceled.
I marvel at these great stars being able to sing so beautifully and so purely night after night. Just listen to the two of these magical people performing this song as if for the first time. And it's great to hear from this recording how Champion cut off the applause button and kept the show moving dramatically. By not applauding, the audience was left just with the warm feeling that this moment created. (But I am glad that on the OC recording they put on an ending.) Why, oh why, did someone not film Martin and Preston in this once-in-a-lifetime pairing? The blurry Tony Award performance of NOBODY'S PERFET is all we have, I fear. (But what a treasure THAT small bit is.) The Jones/Schmidt score is a delight from start to finish. Than you, CONTINUED NEXT WEEK!
This was my very first Broadway show at age 10 1/2. The chance to see The Music Man and Peter Pan as the only two people on stage in a musical was perfection. Glad you can appreciate what artists like Mary Martin and Robert Preston were capable of.
So very pretty
