Superb tutorial. I thought I needed a spark plug, but I replaced the fuel and cleaned the Carb Nut hole.. 6mins into video and now my mower runs like a Rolls royce. :)
Hey thanks mate, My mower died on me yesterday, ran for like a minute then was poked. Tried many times to start it but nothing. Checked plug, fuel filter even replaced sparkplug lead..cause there wasn't I thought a good connection. Anyway.. in the end thanks to you, I found out there was water in the fuel and the filter was gumed up. This due to heavy rain we have had lately , she wasn't sheltered proper. So all good now..Thanks Buddy!!!!.
Excellent tips here. I bought this model mower today and had it running in 20 minutes thanks to this. Only criticism is regarding the float piston. You should mention that it's not actually connected to the float! Many thanks for this video, I shall be ordering a service kit very soon
+paul kent HI Paul thanks for your comments. Sometimes we can overlook or not mention things in our video if we are familiar with 'normal practices' . The float is not normally called a 'float piston' and it is located in a 'float chamber' not a cylinder so we think this is why you may have expected a 'piston' to be attached.
Glad you sorted the problem Mark. The carburetor jets can get blocked when fuel is left in the carburetor and allowed to evaporate away in a warm environment. Try when storing pouring the fuel back into your fuel can and draining the carburetor by opening the drain valve as shown after 5:27
Thanks for this. I drained my tank and carb (old petrol turns a funny shade of yellow) and refilled and it started. Think I'll replace the plug as it's running a little roughly - but your video was an immense help. Thanks.
Hi Matt and thanks for your tutorial ! cleaning the carb and replacing the spark plug did the trick. Might get in touch for a fuel filter assembly since I smashed it against a bush and I am now running the lawnmower without. thx N.
Having watched this. I decided to strip down and de-clag the carburetor. I also gave the spark plug a scrub with a petrol-sodden wire brush, put everything back together again and it worked like new.
eSpares, yes your video help a lot. The 2001 model that I have used a brass(?) float and the carburettor was covered in green stuff. The bolt pin holes were blocked. It started working after it was unblocked and cleaned.
You might make it easier when you take the carb bowl off to use a permanent marker or nail polish, preferably, to make a line from the bowl to the top of the carb for easy realignment assembly.. Just an amatures idea... 😊
This is a UK advice centre , if you Americans dont like it I suggest you go elswhere so you can revel in things like gas, fenders, hoods ect, if you dont like this then you know where you can go
Often there are changes in production so that is likely to be the difference. The carburetor bowl will be removeable as there is a float and valve inside.
Hi Phil, at 3:47 we show how to check the 'throttle' control and linkage. Check this is not stuck and remember the engine will run faster on choke so check this is off once started.
Hi, I have this exact mower that I've just purchased. Followed all your steps to draining the carb, and what came out certainly didn't smell like petrol. It was green and smelt like paint thinners!!! Obviously I have to strip down the carb now, but, any ideas of of how I can get this stuff outta the system? Cheers
The easiest way to clean the fluid out is by removing the float chamber (see the video at 5:33). We believe the chamber is removed by turning the 'nut' under the bowl.
I've got a 2-stroke generator that wont start - I presume the checks are the same for that? I know I left it with petrol/2-stroke mix in it since last August - do you reckon the petrol's gone off? Also I've got a plastic fuel bottle ready mixed of petrol and two stroke which was mixed back in August does it also go off when stored in fuel containers too?
Hi, I have been given a McCulloch M51 140wr Classic, there are two problems to deal with, the first is the blade support is damaged, the two locating studs have sheared off and I guess this will need to be changed and the cable to the rear wheel drive is damaged. how difficult is it to replace the both items and for me the most important is the blade support, I am not too bothered about having to push the mower any help would be great along with any video guides, thanks...
Hi Matt have you worked on a GGP PMR400PMRA DECK I need to take the lower handle off there are two allen head bolts that go through the metal deck into the plastic back end but they just turn around and I dont see any nuts on the in side Phillip
I have the same mower and I need to change the petrol pipe. When I look on line there looks like a few different types depending on engine type and there is mention of kowaski could you tell me what the engine is and engine model please or the part number so I can replace this thanks chris.
Hi Chris, there are many different types you are right but I am confident our sales team will be able to find the part you need www.espares.co.uk/contact/sales
3:50 "You should be able to see that cuts power..." Well, no, I saw something sliding down a touching something else. And since this is the least common mower it would be preferable to show us this doodad on a common engine and tell us the principle involved.
Hi I have a flymo lawnmower but cannot fine the model number. My problem is that the wheel has fallen off! Can you tell me how I am able to fix this thanks.
Hi, if you cannot find any part on our site fill in your information at the following link and we will get back with the part information and price: www.espares.co.uk/contact/sales
make sure if youre in america to warn people not to drink the petrol, or they will and you will be sued, best to put huge warning stickers on the whole mower.
Many mowers create the drive clutch on a mower by releasing the drive belt tension. Check if the belt has broken and watch another of our videos: th-cam.com/video/jsEo2lgfq3Y/w-d-xo.html
I have a Mountfield Jupiter Honda GCV135 4.5 and underneath the petrol tank there is a leak i got the mower 'FIXED' and was charged £35.00 i still have the problem. Can i still get a fuel line for this type of mower? and if not can a universal fuel line do?
If the repair has not worked I would contact the person who carried it out first as it may be the same problem or something else. If you need a petrol pipe we do a universal one that may be suitable here: www.espares.co.uk/product/es132745
Never Never never use compressed air in a carburetor .. There are small gaskets that will blow away and you will never find them. Maybe not this lawn mower but most
Why didn't you check spark plug gap ? PETROL is what you put in cars and mowers. GAS is what comes out of your cooker and operates your heating system.People around the world, please use the english language correctly.
Why has Qualcast got a bad name fore spare parts I have been looking for three weeks for two front wheels replacement on my rotary qualcast mower model XSZ48B-SD if you don't believe me try ordering a spare wheel I think Qualcast mowers are good mowers but getting spare parts are a night mare and if you can find one it will cost you £15 plus each as an ex work study engeer. I hope the suppliers get to read this B&Q are giving out a phone number for a company that has got nothing to with Qualcast and there are feed up with people phoning them why can't I print of a parts list for my model come on Qualcast give us some better service or is it because it is made in China and they could not care less in giving a good back up service thanks for reading this
HI Albert, it looks like we have not been asked for these wheels before. If you want us to quote for supplying them fill in your information here: www.espares.co.uk/contact/sales
manofweed1 I have thought about this a couple of times as Most manufacturers of 'premium' products will not change production if it has a negative impact on reliability. Having been and engineer for forty years and repaired most things I believe they use Nylon gears for a number of reasons of self lubrication and low noise but another possible reason is to act as a mechanical 'fuse'. The main reason for replacement is not wear but physical damage, If the machine catches a stone between the cylinder and the bottom plate with metal gears it would be likely to break the cylinder blade (an expensive replacement). With nylon gears these are more likely to break and protect the blade and as a result cost less to repair.
eSparesVideo you are absolutely spot on . Most machine with gears have a sacrificial or soft gear in the system as the weak link to break if the systems ever gets compromised rather than destroying a gear box or bearings . Take a look inside any lathe and you will find a gear made from layers of resin impregnated cotton
Superb tutorial. I thought I needed a spark plug, but I replaced the fuel and cleaned the Carb Nut hole.. 6mins into video and now my mower runs like a Rolls royce. :)
Thanks for posting this. I fixed my own mower! First time ever. I am one grateful American!
Thanks Matt!! Your clear and concise instructions helped me no end in getting my 35s running
again.
Hi Andrew, thanks for letting us know and glad we could help.
What an absolute life saver this video is. Well explained and covers everything. Thanks a million
Followed these steps, now my lawnmower works again!
Thank you! Got my mower going due to the first couple mins of the video!

Thanks Mat ..just bought a 43s today and your video was very helpful .can't wait to get fresh fuel and get the thing running soon
Good luck and remember to do an oil change as well.
Great work , Nicola - please do give us a shout for any spares you're after! Thanks.
Thank you, was very helpful, after taking the carb apart and cleaning I got my Qualcast going again.

Hi Robbie, it's great to hear that our video has helped to get your lawnmower back up and running again! Thanks for your comment.
Thanks! After cleaning the carburettor it’s started! And I was worried that it might be the coil.
Hi James, well done for sorting and hopefully our video helped.

Hi, I cant see any little holes in the bottom nut. its a qualcast and most of it looks the same but no holes?
HI Andy, what nut are we talking about?.
the bottom nut of the carburetor in the vodeo
Often there are changes in production so that is likely to be the difference. The carburetor bowl will be removeable as there is a float and valve inside.
thanks for this!
Hi, great and useful video, my 17s start ok but pulse's on tick over (carb opens and closes on the spring) is this normal? ,
Thanks for the video very helpful, I've got mine started but runs on full revs and won't idle! Any ideas, thanks
Hi Phil, at 3:47 we show how to check the 'throttle' control and linkage. Check this is not stuck and remember the engine will run faster on choke so check this is off once started.
Renew the petrol - good point sir (but "tension" is what you need and what you get, not "torsion"! )
Thanks for the comments, this is one of our earlier videos. Hopefully we would not make the same mistake on the videos we produce now. 😉
Who cares if it's tension or torsion we knew what you meant!! - great video!
Thanks for the support. 😊

Thanks for the video I haven’t bought my first petrol mower yet and I’m torn between this mower and the Suffolk punch. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Hi Steven, I think it comes down to choice so compare the 2 lawnmowers you like and what would suit your needs.
At 3.55 on the video you show a safety cutout. Mine has broken and I can't find what it's called or find it on your site. Is it available?

Hi Tim, unfortunately, we do not have a video on these repairs.

A premium product with plastic drive cogs ? Seems the only possible improvement over the older versions is possibly the air filter ?!
