  • There are more than just the 3 basic reasons a petrol lawnmower won't start spark/fuel/compression are just the basic ones.
    I go through all the other reasons a petrol lawnmower won't start that I have found by repairing hundreds of mowers over the years.

    Thanks for this great video. It's amazing how much impact the diaphragm has on a mower running bad or not at all. Just over 3 quid for the two bits and a good carb clean and from not starting, and or shaking and coughing like me with the flu, I now have a happy mower purring like a kitten 🙂

However, once cleaned the engine was still searching as before with engine coughs and oscillating power. What would be your next diagnostic step please if you've already cleaned air filter, spark plug and put new fuel into the beast? Many thanks, Neil

    Hi, my mower starts on 3rd pull, smokes heavily and conks out? Briggs and Stratton, fairly new mower. Fuel good, plug a little sooty, so cleaned and fine sanded it, and fuel getting through. Leave for a day and exactly the same thing happens. Been going on for four days and it looks like rain !
    Any ideas ? I would be very grateful, and thank you so very much for the video.

    Thanks Mr Mowerman. Good presentation. But I'm just a female who wants to cut the bloody grass and get this beast of a thing to start so I can get the job done. The mechanics and technology of things is interesting but. I don't have the time to stuff around with the intricacies of mechanics and technology. And after many arguments with men in my family trying to teach me how it all works and getting angry at my wreckless impatience to just get the work done, I have decided it is worth paying an exert mower repair man to service this beast of a machine so it works. I fed it, I was very nice to it. I brushed and cleaned it with loving care, begged it to start but it justmade a few grunting noises after I wore myself out pulling the cord about 20 times and all this dirty looking foul smoke came out of it. This bastard obviously doesn't seem to like me very much. So it sounds like a job for expert males to handle.

      @@MowerMan There's also plenty of wannabe comedians on TH-cam. I think you've been stitched-up if you think this was a woman who wrote the original comment. "Annemarie" is probably an Andrew or Alexander in real life. Admittedly, I laughed heartily at "fed it". To add fuel and refer to it as "fed it" was pretty original. 😂

    Good vid, thanks. For me personally, getting to about halfway thru when you start talking about, and setting about, timing problems, then this is when I say it's better to ditch this mower, it's had it, and buy a new one, because unlike a couple of decades ago when petrol mowers were very expensive, they are now very affordable; a cheapie now can be only about 79 quid, all new and guaranteed.

  • @mercerengland3392
    @mercerengland3392 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Paul, I've checked for compression and spark and all is ok. No blockages in the fuel line, new primer bulb and I've cleaned out the carb. All good but still would'nt start. Turned out to be vacuum seal on the petrol fuel cap!! If I remove the cap and prime it I can see bubbles, refit cap and it starts every time. There's no obvious breather hole in the cap. Have you come across this before?

    Hi I've got a Mountfield petrol mower which is less than 12 months old I'm having problems with it stopping and not restarting. I've drained the tank of the old fuel (Advised by serviceline) also bled the fuel system but this hasn't sorted the problem the local dealer has said that its probably fuel crystallisation which isn't covered under warranty and wants £40 to immerse the carb in a sonic tank(or something like that) is this a common fault because of stale fuel?

    Hello Paul, I've got a 2.5 yr old Sovereign XSS40A. Just wont start. Had problems after I gave it an oil change. I've had it bits. Carb ok, apart from butterfly valve spring which I rectified. Ignition coil ohms tested ok as did spark plug (new one & the old one) Even had cylinder head off to check valves ok. Dead man switch wire ok. Though if that was broken should stop it starting. Fly wheel in alignment. I'm at a lose. My eye sight isn't that good. When wife pulls the cord I cannot see a spark though plugs tests ok & gap is set correctly. 0.7 to 0.8 mm. On the odd occasion when I did get it to start it seems to backfire. But flywheel is aligned. Help. Regards Stephen

  • @ottofumbler7267
    @ottofumbler7267 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could the 5th thing be a blocked exhaust? I took the cylinder head off, and it was heavily coked-up. It's got really bad kickback when cold starting, but the flywheel and blade don't have any play. Although I can't get the flywheel off, the key seems it good condition. I don't think it's the timing, but perhaps a restricted exhaust port might be the next area I check.

      dennis pratt Hi Dennis if you definitely have spark compression and fuel going through In theory it should start. Usually if it doesn't it's down to timing.!are you using new petrol? You could buy a can of quick start? Remove the spark plug and spray some in then quickly replace the plug and try to start the mower. It it runs for a few seconds then dies you can be sure you still have a fuel starvation problem probably from the carburettor. Also if the lawnmower has a fuel tap make sure it's turned on. I had a similar idea to this. Any clue what the threaded dimensions are for this particular flywheel (B&S part 795549)?
      M4 is too small, and M5 is too big, so I'm guessing it's not metric, or the threads on my flywheel have been stripped by a previous bodger.

    Hi loncin 196cc lawnmower i have spark with a tester but not with a plug tried a dozen plugs new & of another working machine no spark I'm,e baffled ! have you come across this before! i had it on a briggs &s before kill wire on &off, if the timing was out it would show a spark at some time

  • @alanmay1945
    @alanmay1945 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well I had another go at trying to start mine today, after a year or so of it being unused. I got a good spark at the plug, I saw that with my own eyes, and was surprised as it is so lifeless I thought it was no spark stopping it from starting. Then I tested the compression, with my gauge, and that's good too. So then I drained all the petrol out, from the tank and carb, it was newly filled anyway of course, but I thought some old stale petrol might be in there, and filled it with fresh. Pressed the primer to get it pushed along. So with a good normal spark, good normal compression, and fresh petrol, I thought it must start, because why would'nt it. But it did'nt. I tried and tried and tried and tried, pulling on that cord hundreds of times, and there was no life there at all. It did not even show the slightest sign of firing up. It always used to start and go alright. I did'nt leave it a year ago because it would'nt go, when it was stored it had been working fine. What on earth is wrong with it now? I suppose now, after watching your video, I have to start looking into timing, with that square pin you show, and then the valves. Something is preventing it from even wanting to start. It's a Techumseh engine btw. I'll never be able to put it back together again, but I'll have to take it all apart just because I'm compelled to know why it would'nt start. I feel like beating it to bits with a sledgehammer, like Basil Fawlty with his car. But I'm instead going to carefully remove all its nuts and bolts, have a good look inside to see what the problem was, and then, after day after day after day after day of keep trying to start it with no luck, I'm going to have the last laugh on it as I chuck it bit by bit into the wheelie bin, uttering lots of scathing verbal abuse to it as it goes in the bin. Alan, in Norfolk.

    • @MowerMan
      @MowerMan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      alan may Alan.If it worked ok last time you put it away it can't possibly be the timing. It sounds like everything is ok apart from you are not getting fuel from the carb to the plug. You need to service the carb. There will be a blockage in there.

    • @alanmay1945
      @alanmay1945 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MowerMan I did get it going, to my surprise, and actually it works just great now and I celebrated this by making a nice neat job of my lawn, which was about 8inches high. It was a simple fix; undid the bolt underneath the fuel/float chamber, removed it, leaving the chamber body in place as it was stuck there anyway due to 20yrs of being there 'fused' in place with the rubber seal, so best left alone rather than pulled away and ripped, and looking very closely at this bolt I saw that the tiny hole in it for the fuel jet was absolutley blocked with hardened 'gunge'. Poking it in with a very small safety pin needle and squirting wd40 thru it with more poking cleaned it out thoroughly . Put it back, filled it with new petrol, primed the rubber button, pulled the startcord and BINGO !!! started straight away and kept on going. Just a tiny blocked hole was all that it was. Thanks for your help, you inspired me to persevere and it paid off, many thanks for your video and reply, best wishes from Alan, in Norfolk.

      CKF Garden Maintenance If it had the same carburettor and fuel tank as the one in this video it definitely needs the diaphragm and gasket changing. There is a link to how to do that in the description of this video

      CKF Garden Maintenance It sounds like the carburettor needs a service. Make sure the needle isn't getting stuck inside the carburettor

    Hi Paul just wanted to ask a question what’s going to be the next mower that’s going to be the next mowers to look for would like to have your opinion David

      David Brewer I would take a look at why B and Q are selling each year here in the UK anyway. Mc Culloch was the choice a few years ago so there are a few of them around. It doesn't really matter as all the basic servicing is the same you just need a little common sense to strip them down sometimes

      Rob Rusticwoodlandproducts I was waiting for this. I had to flip the clip horizontally to make the top left becoming the top right. It wasn't that I don't know my right from my left but my camera screen was flipped round so I could see what I was filming lol. I really should have run a competition!
