I'm kind of oscillating between "wow why're you going so hard on that piano" and "jesus christ the passion in this man is like a million supernovas going off literally for all eternity" at the frequency of gamma rays
i woke up this morning and you know what i thought you know what my first thought was??? "today i wanna get broken i just wanna empty my eye sockets of all fluids and just die a little ya know" and guess what the world delivered
I do hope the epilogue/Hiveswap/Homestuck TH-cam channel keep the fandom alive. Because, while the story must eventually end, I don't want people to stop being talking about it and being introduced to it.
I was lucky; I made a skype group about HS just days before the forums went down. we talk about lots of other things, but HS is the standard topic of discussion. its pretty cool.
I don't think that'll happen. If anything I think now that it's over, Homestuck's notoriety will over time begin to grow. It's a work of modern literature, a statement on our culture and generation, and that's really valuable to talk about even besides all of it's other forms of depth. Now that it's mostly "over", actual analysis work can begin, and people are already working on doing that. Stormingtheivory, TH-cam's Tex Talks, whoever else springs up--It's as exciting a time as ever to care deeply about Homestuck. Just in a different way. The Bible never faded away on completion, and neither have any other popular/impactful works we have now--there's no reason to think Homestuck will. And yeah there's also all the other exciting work Homestuck diaspora creators are doing. Undertale, Neo-Kosmos, Hiveswap, the list continues to grow. Homestuck fandom isn't going anywhere, I'm pretty certain of that.
You've hit me pretty hard with this one. I'm literally crying right now because you're playing this song with so much emotion and on itself the song is super emotional, you got me with this one
I'm usually protective of the songs that I really really love in anything, especially this one since it's my top favorite song of Homestuck. This song strikes a chord with me because of how it can go from gentle guitars to heavy electric then back to gentle piano and violins and I loved the song for being able to do that. You managed to replicate it all on one piano and keep the feel and sound of it. I love it so much.
Thank you! I do try very hard to make these recreate the effect of the originals (not just get the notes right) - which sometimes means that I won't arrange certain tracks that I like because I don't think I could do them justice on piano.
Can...I just say some things? I need you to know this. You..inspire me to play piano better than I already do. You have made me feel the need to practice more, play more and attempt to learn songs. This..was beautiful... So many tears fell from my eyes and down my cheeks yet it brought me so much happiness. Thank you so..so much. I play piano, but I cannot read sheet music..I play by ear so learning this will be tricky until I get the hang of reading sheet music. Thank you again, this is stunning and you have captured every single moment, feeling and movement this entire Fandom and Comic has brought us. Seriously, thank you.
+Tia Silva Wow...thank you. I don't know how to adequately respond to that, but...that means a lot. I do recommend learning to read sheet music if you have time, although you can theoretically learn most things by ear with enough practice. Best of luck!
Do The Musicy Thing thank you, oh....and I recently went back and watched your "Gold Pilot" Arrangement......are you some sort of...Knight of Piano or something!? HOW DO YOU DO THIS!? it makes no sense..but it again inspires me to look further into piano.
+Tia Silva Eh, they take time. That's really most of what there is to how I do them. Heir of Grief had to be done quickly to be ready for 4/13, but it still took hours of work. It basically comes down to paying attention to sonority and momentum when arranging, and being willing to do something difficult when necessary to do the music justice.
Do The Musicy Thing damn, well I respect you for taking the time out of your days to create such beautiful Arrangements for us, it means the world to me in particular that I can find things that are good to draw or study too, such as all of your videos. xD so thank you again, you really are amazing.. Yeah..I know I've said it a lot as well as saying thanks a lot but I mean it, I really do :3
@@user-jo5wx2sl7v Dirk is known to get decapitated frequently within Homestuck (I think at least 3 times), I combined the words Cappucino (A type of drink) and the word to Decapitate to create the pun of De-cappuccino and joke that it must be his favourite drink since he gets decapitated so much (Usually on purpose, at least 3 times)
Its so weird to listen to this being so far removed from when I was a fan of homestuck but still understanding the feelings I had then, and honestly it reminds me how much of a push homestuck was for my creativity even if I like to laugh about how cringey it is now. I was insanely into the god tier system and knew the ins and outs of it, I created so many indepth characters, I planned a whole fan comic of me and my friends with our god tiers figured out and started drawing the first pages, I even wrote themes for everyone and their lands on musescore. That music was some of the first music I ever wrote, and now here I am pursuing a degree in music composition. I dont give this series enough credit for how much it changed me in the year and a half that I read it from 8th grade into my freshman year of highschool, but damn, who knew these kids and their crazy adventure would change me so much.
Oh my lord this is like the BEST cover of heir of grief i had ever listen mainly because this song is my favourite in Homestuck. Thank you sir, for making a wonderful piano cover. 😊
Credit Joren de Bruin as the composer, meaning. You can credit the arranger as either Do the Musicy Thing or Sean William Calhoun (my real name), depending on what fits the program's style better.
+Maid of Heart Tensei did an excellent piece. While I have to say Overture is my favorite (and has been since before Act 7), Heir of Grief was great in Collide.
... can I just express how much I love your arrangement? generally, for songs as repetitive as this one, I tend to get bored -- which is a shame, because there are very beautiful pieces out there that happen to be repetitive (such as this one)! but the dynamic changes and the harmonies take me completely by surprise, and it keeps my attention throughout the entire piece! and now i cant stop listening to it..
+kinnaaan Thanks! Much of the credit for keeping the piece interesting goes to Tensei for how he composed it; I just arranged it for and played it on piano.
Coming back to this 6 years later… I remember reading homestuck when I was in middle school and coming across this video and thinking wow some day I want to learn to play this. Now I’m going to college to get my bachelors in music and I think I’m finally ready to actually start getting this piece under my fingers.
This...is...amazing...just...I feel immasculated. If I weren't a drummer, and had the whole "Things keep deeper as you go right" engraved, I would try to learn it on piano. But Even then I could come no where near you
on a random impulse i decided to revisit this cover and man do i not regret it. i havent thought about homestuck in a few years but i remember spending hours just... talking to friends about it, making art, enjoying this epic piece of media. heir of grief was one of the first non-classical pieces i tried to learn on the piano, inspired by this very cover! it was nowhere near as good, but, honestly, its probably what pushed me to really enjoy the piano and now im completing my arct. just, kudos to you man, and kudos to andrew hussie for making such an amazing webcomic
am i the only one who cries as i remember all the great time s i had in homestuck, it is hard to believe it is over, i hereby vow to never give up reading, i shall reread homestuck forever, my children shall read homestuck as shall their children and all the restof my line .
+mastersx99 I definitely want to reread it as well. I'll wait until the epilogue is out so I can have full continuity when I reread, but it'll definitely be worth rereading. And I'll keep recommending it to people.
+Tejas Gokarn Thank you for listening - I'm glad you liked it! I wasn't aware of the piece until [S] Collide, but after I heard it in that, I wanted to arrange it.
So maybe I shouldn’t be commenting but, welcome to 2019, 3 years after this was made and Homestuck officially ended, and a couple of days since the infamous Homestuck^2: Beyond Canon came out. With this comic and Hiveswap 2 making its way, I can safely say that 2019 nearby declares a new, although minuscule, wave of Homestucks. The time is now people, the space between the past and present closing ever so slowly, yet in the light of what has happened thus far, the world must prepare to have its breath taken away very, very soon. You have a feeling that 2020 is going to be a long year. Let me tell you about Homestuck.
I didn't cry at the end of act 7 because I guess it wasn't as moving as I thought it was gonna be but this just drove me to tears. This is composed so beautifully
Found this video again after so long and all I can say is thank you for playing so beautifully, the nostalgia trip is real and this makes my heart so full
+Skylar Capricious I wanted to have something for 4/13, and this seemed the most relevant thing to do. And, while it required a fairly intense week of work preparing it, it's not ridiculously hard.
i was playing the bass part to this while watching it and it was so satisfying to hear the fill at 3:50 be completely synchronized with my playing. this is an amazing cover. keep up the fine work.
i know this video is going on five years old, but wow. this is seriously breathtaking (no pun intended). i play piano pretty casually, but this... this is what i aspire to. and i don't know if i'll ever be able to achieve it, but god, seeing you play like this makes me want to put in the work to try. i don't know if you'll see this comment -- if anyone will -- but, truly, you are such an incredible inspiration. i hope you're doing well, wherever you are, and that you're still gracing the world with your gorgeous arrangements. thank you!
As that was a practice room piano, it's probably on wheels, which makes that a bit easier. But yes, pianos can shake a little bit when you're particularly emphatic. Thanks!
There's so many emotions connected to this song. It's truly a masterpiece. It makes you feel how worn from the battle they are and yet how determined they are to win the fight... Their dreams, their memories. The stronger focus is on the humans (especially the four the comic started with) with each having their part in the song and their instrument in it. Though I feel like it's especially strong on John's side. First off the song is called "Heir of Grief". Who of the main characters is heir? John. Why grief? Well, he is the John from the pre-retcon/GAME OVER timeline after all. He remembers another outcome to the final battle. All of his friends had died before and he took all the blame for it. Though surely this battle was very emotional for him, him remembering everyone that died and fighting on for them....making this timeline have a better ending.
I mean, there will keep being reminders, like the eventual epilogue, and Hiveswap, and whatever they do on the Homestuck Official channel. (But thanks)
This may be the hardest piece I tried so far. I hope that someday I will be able to play it myself, too! :D thank you so much for sharing! Keep up the good work and don't you ever stop playing cause you're soo great!
I'll keep doing these! And good luck with learning to play it. You might also try playing A Taste for Adventure - while that one's long (and was difficult to record for that reason), it's one of my less difficult arrangements technically (and if nothing else, you could learn the easier sections of it). Sburban Jungle is probably the easiest arrangement I've done, if you can find someone to play it with.
I believe you mean your favorite Human, Troll, and Cherub History Soundtracks. Because, as we all know, ANIME IS REAL, and so Act 7 depicts 100% True Historical Facts.
This is amazing! Congratulations on being able to arrange AND fantastically play this piece in 6 days or less! You did an excellent job and it's such a good arrangement, now I really want to also learn to play this piece thanks to you.
You did a beyond amazing job with this. Your piano arrangements always translate so well from the original audio. This song is just as epic on piano as it is on electric guitar. I'm trying to arrange Black for piano and it's proving to be a huge challenge. I look forward to seeing what you do next!
Always so beautiful with your playing fam! I love this song so much! I'm also very surprised on how quick you can learn to play them! Keep up the excellent work!! x
+FandomTrash 3000 Normally I don't do them this quickly; they normally take a few weeks. But I wanted something for 4/13, so did what was necessary (and this actually isn't a super hard one).
holy fucking shit...this hit me in the hardest way. the sequence that went with this song in the flash animation made me freaking cry because of the whole thing about homestuck ending and shit, and I saw one synthesia cover that looked nigh impossible, and here you freaking are. you sir have gained a sub, a thumbs up and a favorite
Thank you very much! To play every note in the original would be impossible for one person on piano, although this arrangement is not one of the harder arrangements I've done. I mean, it's not easy by any means, but around the middle in difficulty.
I started listening to this thinking "Yeah, it's alright." Then it kept going and I just felt the care and emotion really build up. Absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to see what else has been covered!
This is one of my favorite songs in Homestuck, and I really have to thank you for arranging sheet music for this! I'm slowly learning it, but still far from getting to your level; so good job with your piano covers, and keep up the excellent work!
Thanks! I'll always post sheet music with these arrangements; I have to make it for myself anyway, and it's not much extra work to post it for anyone who wants it.
The way it changes from strong to fragile, it's like when you cry and someone gives you a hug...
Tensei did that really well - and it comes out in Collide where it shows the kids' past, and Jade's more playful style.
It really kills me everytime

+Ry Bread Thank you!
This was absolutely awesome! I've been looking for a piano cover of this song for a while since I first heard it! You are amazing!
+This is just an account Thank you!
a very great arrangement! this never gets old. i am merely a fan of your work.
Thank you!
i was playing the bass part to this while watching it and it was so satisfying to hear the fill at 3:50 be completely synchronized with my playing.
this is an amazing cover. keep up the fine work.
i know this video is going on five years old, but wow. this is seriously breathtaking (no pun intended). i play piano pretty casually, but this... this is what i aspire to. and i don't know if i'll ever be able to achieve it, but god, seeing you play like this makes me want to put in the work to try. i don't know if you'll see this comment -- if anyone will -- but, truly, you are such an incredible inspiration. i hope you're doing well, wherever you are, and that you're still gracing the world with your gorgeous arrangements. thank you!
so beautiful, I'm getting chills :3
Thank you!
I am overcome with emotion. Sir, you have outdone yourself, thank you for doing this.
+vividObscurity Thank you! It was an effort to get it done so quickly, but I'm glad I could put it together.
play so hard the piano shakes, nice.
by the way, positively amazing work, can't imagine it done better!
Though surely this battle was very emotional for him, him remembering everyone that died and fighting on for them....making this timeline have a better ending.
your channel name is awesome! Also awesome job on Heir of Grief
i tried to play this and my hands just could not props to you for being awesome keep doing what you do (please you're seriously amazing)
I'm going to keep doing this - the next arrangement's coming a little later than hoped, but it'll come, as will more after it.
OH GEE THANKS FOR MAKING ME MOURN HOMESTUCK AGAIN WITH YOUR BREATHTAKING TALENT.
I mean, there will keep being reminders, like the eventual epilogue, and Hiveswap, and whatever they do on the Homestuck Official channel. (But thanks)
oh... OHHHH!!!!
MY
GOD
My hands hurt just watching this! XD Can you do Dance of Thorns I'm trying to learn it and watching you will probably help.
Dance of Thorns is a good track - it's probably not one I'll do particularly soon (there are others that are higher priorities), but maybe someday.
You are so talented, thanks so much for making this, sometimes I go back to this video because it really makes me happy and nostalgic.
I'm glad you like it - Thanks for listening!
+Do The Musicy Thing Thanks for playing! Pun intended
Oh god, it's so beautiful! I wish I could play piano that good! I think I'll just keep trying to be as good as you. You inspire me! :)
+Heliwarp Thank you - Best of luck with playing!
this is just beatifull, it brings tear to my eye :')
Thank you! Tensei composed a good piece.
This is the best undertale fan song I've ever heard
*****
Just listening to it fills me with determination
*shakes head*
I believe you mean your favorite Human, Troll, and Cherub History Soundtracks. Because, as we all know, ANIME IS REAL, and so Act 7 depicts 100% True Historical Facts.
Do The Musicy Thing
I just knew... I just knew that when Act 7 was released I was going to have a
bad time. ¬_____¬
And so was a green/rainbow monster when a few colorful souls fought him together.
This is amazing! Congratulations on being able to arrange AND fantastically play this piece in 6 days or less! You did an excellent job and it's such a good arrangement, now I really want to also learn to play this piece thanks to you.
Thanks! It was an intense week putting it together, but it was worth it. Good luck with learning it!
This inspired me to actually learn it on piano. Thanks!
That was beautiful ! I'm litterally crying ;^;
Thank you!
+Do The Musicy Thing You're welcome :)
You did a beyond amazing job with this. Your piano arrangements always translate so well from the original audio. This song is just as epic on piano as it is on electric guitar. I'm trying to arrange Black for piano and it's proving to be a huge challenge. I look forward to seeing what you do next!
+Bubpuff Thank you - I appreciate it! And good luck with Black - that's a complicated one.
Do The Musicy Thing Ah fair enough that makes sense!
So good! Great job!
+Orange Karpusi Thanks!
this is sooooo beautiful
+Beachy The Space Pirate Thank you!
This was amazing!
+Kagome Coco Thank you!
AAAAA THIS IS SO GOOD
This will be the second arrangement I learn from you :'D
Good luck on learning it!
holy fucking shit...this hit me in the hardest way. the sequence that went with this song in the flash animation made me freaking cry because of the whole thing about homestuck ending and shit, and I saw one synthesia cover that looked nigh impossible, and here you freaking are. you sir have gained a sub, a thumbs up and a favorite
Thank you very much! To play every note in the original would be impossible for one person on piano, although this arrangement is not one of the harder arrangements I've done. I mean, it's not easy by any means, but around the middle in difficulty.
THIS. Just. THIS. I can't. Just. Asdfghjkl. This is too beautiful. Thank you so much.
Thanks for listening! Tensei did a very good piece.
Subscribed as soon as I saw your channel name. Good job.
Thanks!
I started listening to this thinking "Yeah, it's alright." Then it kept going and I just felt the care and emotion really build up. Absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to see what else has been covered!
+Rory O'Driscoll Thank you! I hope you do like some of the others (there have been several by now).
Oh wow this must be a great way to relieve anger
THIS GIVES ME SO MANY FEEELS
+Tera Wolf Be careful you don't fill up your Sylladex with all those feels.
Maaan you're the best this fucking song is so emotional. Keep going!
