Everyone seems to think this song is depressing but I think its the absolute opposite. To me, its about being down and out and coming back strong. Bad break up? You'll get through. Death in the family? They'd have wanted you to move on and live life. You get to take their memories and stories with you. Lost your job? Time to get a better one. Time to learn and grow. No one knows your strength better than you. What do you have left in tank?
You kno, "Lets see how far we've come" does not sound like "Yo, lets try again, next time it'll be better", it sounds much more like "Let's see how far we've come, now that everything is over." It sounds like "Now lets take a look at everything we managed to do, to see what we can write as Epitaph on our grave". No idea why song being depressive considered by some as something so bad that they need to somehow "turn it motivational" or smthn. This song is depressive, and its good. Finally, some song that is good-sounding, and not some whining about lost love, but rather actually meaningfull melancholy masterpiece.
@@loginlost_horizon6327 I don't see it like that at all. First of all the tempo and melody are not depressive at all. The tempo is quick and the melody is very up-beat and progressive. The symbolism in the music video also made a huge impact on me. In the music video itself you see a recounting of all the progress we've made through human history and how trying times turned into positive, progressive results. For me one of the key moments in the music video that demonstrates that the song is not actually about the world ending is at 2:27 where they say "Now it's over for me and it's over for you" before the video cuts out. When it cuts back in it cuts into fireworks and the atomic clock showing the year "2000" along with footage of people clearly celebrating the new year. Anyone who knows about the Y2K scare should recognize the significance of this part of the music video but in summary the Y2K scare was an event of mass hysteria where people thought the world would end when the clocks hit midnight, Jan 1 2000. But of course the world did not end and we all went on to celebrate the turn of the century. I personally believe that, by referencing the Y2K scare here, they were essentially saying "Look - the world didn't end. We all thought it would but it didn't." In other words the song is a hopeful one that points to moments of doom and gloom and says "all of those times in history where things were bad - where we thought the world was ending - after all was said and done we came out better for it. Look how far we've come." This is further reinforced by the rest of the video fast forwarding through events post the year 2000. The remainder of the Clinton presidency, Al Gore campaigning, Barack Obama campaigning, etc. There is nothing wrong with depressive songs or having differing interpretations of what a song means. With that said though there is also nothing wrong with pointing out valid points that could lead people to interpret this song not as depressive but as upbeat and inspiring. I've come back to this song numerous times over the past 15 years or so and it always makes me feel better when I am going through trying times or think that the state of things around me are not so great at the moment.

I was 15 when this song came out… I’m currently six months away from thirty… I didn’t understand the notion that whole years seemed to pass in days until times like these when I realize this song has been around for half of my life. What a long strange trip it’s all been.
I haven't heard this song in so many years and I completely forgot what it was called. The chorus just randomly came into my head and I've been searching for this for so freaking long. I love it!
y'know it's weird. i'm EXTREMELY depressed, have been for years, and i have basically no faith in humanity left. and yet...this song makes me happy. it makes me like myself. it makes me acknowledge all the good things i've done, and the fact that despite all odds i've made it this far. yeah, idk, like i said. it's weird.
Not weird at all, run with it, we all need something to make us realise the good and not the bad and if this song does it for you crank it up and play it on repeat, jump on the furniture and dance like noone is watching. Chin up, just remember on your darkest day you've got this.
One of my comfort songs when my depression is really bad is Bullet by Hollywood Undead, and that song is just straight up about suicide. But it sounds so upbeat. Trust me, you're not any weirder than the rest of us
I agree with how you are feeling, I sometimes feel that way too. And also agree with the comments in here that we just need to do a bit fine tuning in this country and we're all trying to figure out what that is. Now normally I would put a like to what you have just said, but in my heart of hearts I didn't want to effect that lil ol 69 number.... tehehehaha. 😉
Everyone so negative here. This song should show how much we have archieved in our lives. And we did so much. This song gives me good vibed. Especially love the pictures of the breaking of the Berlin wall. True freedom and joy was felt that day. Indescribable.
Our knowledge and experience has been suppressed throughout the years. If you think that we just now are finding out how to do things must've never seen ancient Hindu temples and lost mass civilizations nature took over in the rainforest. We even have cities at the bottom of the ocean . All with things done that we can't in 2020 replicate unless you use over sophisticated means of machining. They had stuff back in the days , the Vatican houses most the world's suppressed knowledge it's in there I'm sure .
I agree. This song makes me think of all the things we have accomplished. It’s not about the end of the world. It’s about thinking of the great things you have witnessed and done in your life.😁
Music is art and mostly up to interpretation. MaryArts, what is not up for interpretation is this song. He is literally talking about the rapture. "While there's life there's hope" - Stephen Hawking So if you're stress out, and had given up, please dont. Remember, human is by far one of the most intelligent creature on earth and we all have an ability to create something that have never been done before. So, don't give up and do what you love, and maybe you could change the world forever.
Said in disgust. Hope is a horrible thing, also are we so intelligent, that we killed our own inhabitence. That when society ends, will be another day.
I want to be hopeful for humanity, because individual humans can do so much good. But I'm worried for us as a whole. Our technology keeps increasing, but our wisdom does not, and it's like a testament to both our intelligence and stupidity.
There's no way that Hawking was the first one to say that. Off the top of my head (which is, admittedly, rather cluttered) the oldest place I've seen that quote show up in is The Hobbit, which was published in 1939.

My high school marching band played this and easily one of the best songs ever. It was kind of a tradition that one of the last songs seniors played in marching band was this song or they played it at our last concert.
This song just becomes more and more relevant, with both themes you can extract from it becoming more and more true, either being that the moments where things look bad for you is where you truly come into your own, or that it all means nothing because everything will end one day. Though it was absolutely angling for the 1st one, both are more and more relevant to the modern day and it's many problems.

I've come back to this song numerous times over the past 15 years or so and it always makes me feel better when I am going through trying times or think that the state of things around me are not so great at the moment.
Man I cannot believe this song is 14 years old. It's a genuine privilege to be able to enjoy this music.
I can't believe i turn 42 in a few months, i was 20 yesterday 😢. Time flies, my young friends. Live laugh and love. Try to make another persons day and leave the world a little better place than you found it. ✌️ ❤️
I absolutely love the comment you left! It feels so inspiring to read your post! 😊❤
This is one of my favorite Matchbox 20 songs ever! I mean they have a few other songs that I like but, this is the Greatest!
I love it!
Same thing happened to me just right now. Haha.
+Okaypizza I actually hunted for this song for yeeeaaaarrsssss......didn't know the title until recently

Kristopher Levine I
Kristopher Levine it's a great song
just a thought maybe its because everyday we are an inch closer to the end.
life is beautiful and cruel at the same time.
Fact
y'know it's weird. i'm EXTREMELY depressed, have been for years, and i have basically no faith in humanity left. and yet...this song makes me happy. it makes me like myself. it makes me acknowledge all the good things i've done, and the fact that despite all odds i've made it this far. yeah, idk, like i said. it's weird.
Yo, there’s plenty good left in the world!! Just have to look in the right places 😊
Not weird at all, run with it, we all need something to make us realise the good and not the bad and if this song does it for you crank it up and play it on repeat, jump on the furniture and dance like noone is watching. Chin up, just remember on your darkest day you've got this.
Keep fucking pushing bud! Let's see where we end up
One of my comfort songs when my depression is really bad is Bullet by Hollywood Undead, and that song is just straight up about suicide. But it sounds so upbeat. Trust me, you're not any weirder than the rest of us
I agree with how you are feeling, I sometimes feel that way too. And also agree with the comments in here that we just need to do a bit fine tuning in this country and we're all trying to figure out what that is. Now normally I would put a like to what you have just said, but in my heart of hearts I didn't want to effect that lil ol 69 number.... tehehehaha. 😉
It’s 2022… and this song is still everything.
And it has heavy relevance to the 2020 era.
I mean waking up at the start of the end of the world and it feels like every morning before describes the 2020’s perfectly so far

Our knowledge and experience has been suppressed throughout the years. I agree. This song makes me think of all the things we have accomplished. It’s not about the end of the world. It’s about thinking of the great things you have witnessed and done in your life.😁
Music is art and mostly up to interpretation.
MaryArts, what is not up for interpretation is this song.

… I'm waking up at the start of the end of the world,
But its feeling just like every other morning before,
Now I wonder what my life is going to mean if it's gone,
The cars are moving like a half a mile an hour
And I started staring at the passengers who're waving goodbye
Can you tell me what was ever really special about me all this time?
… But I believe the world is burning to the ground
Oh well, I guess we're gonna find out
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come
Well I, believe, it all, is coming to an end
Oh well, I guess, we're gonna pretend,
Let's see how far we've come
Let's see how far we've come

Then I can't remember caring for an hour or so
Started crying and I couldn't stop myself
I started running but there's no where to run to
I sat down on the street and took a look at myself
Said where you going man you know the world is headed for hell
Say your goodbyes if you've got someone you can say goodbye to

Now it's over for me, and it's over for you
Well its gone gone, baby its all gone

So if you're stress out, and had given up, please dont. Remember, human is by far one of the most intelligent creature on earth and we all have an ability to create something that have never been done before. So, don't give up and do what you love, and maybe you could change the world forever.
❤️
@@hllyenaylleth9576 being intelligent ≠ being clever.
Intelligence is the ability to use intellect to explore the reality that surrounds us.
Being clever is the ability to use our knowledge to achieve the most amount of good with every possible choice we make.

It brings back bad memories but I still love it.
It's a short song with one hell of an impact.
Great Band !!

2023 and this song is #1, for me; love Rob's voice and his eyes.
I heard this song since my 15 years, and I tell u, this song makes me keep going, with all my anxiety and depression cuz I want to see how far I will go. I want to see what my life is going to be. I want to see what I will accomplish...
"A person's steps are made secure by the Lord when they delight in his way. Though they trip up, they won’t be thrown down, because the Lord holds their hand." - Psalm 37:23-24
I've started listening to this every new years ever since a friend introduced it to me :'D
I feel like this song fits life more and more every day especially the last couple of months with all the bad things that have happened throughout the world!
It's gone. Gone baby it's all gone. There's no one on the corner and there's no one at home. Well it was cool. Cool. It was just all cool. But now it's over for me. And it's over for you.
I'm actually crying guys.
I miss my childhood.
God! Give me my life back!
😢😭😭😭
Quit looking to the past and move foward.
Young King [FPS Gaming] No! I'm tired of trying to put my life together. The ones that I love disappearing one by one. They are all just memories now. I don't think there is a good thing in the future.
Nothing better than growing up to my mom being into Matchbox Twenty, Lifehouse, Daughtery, The Script etc and now at 19 years old, this is all I listen to! Road Trips was the best listening to 90s/00s pop rock
I just heard this song on another video; I immediately realized it was a song I'd heard on the radio a long time ago but never found out what it was called or who it was by. I finally found it.....Absolutely elated right now!!!!
I remember being a teenager and this coming on VH1 when it was a new song and really feeling excited because the video made me think the world was going to be heading in a better direction. Sad that now I’m an adult and things seem much more worse and just complicated with the economy and politics than ever before. Great jam

How Far We've Come by Matchbox Twenty is musically cheering to listen to. The lyrics and sunny music hypnotically combine to create a fascinating contrast.
