    I love the way you seem to be so passionate about this song. I don't know if you watched his interview with Howard and he has mentioned this in other interviews before. He is a huge fan of Peter Gabriel and has said that he thinks everything about this song is perfect. You mentioned this being sacred ground for you but I think it's sacred ground for him too. He thinks this song is so good the way it is that he doesn't like the idea of changing it up.
    I noticed that when he does a song from one of his heroes he doesn't like to deviate from the original. He changes it up in other covers, his cover of ultralightbeam by Kanye West for example is very very different than the original.
    Also in this context he was specifically performing it as a fan of this song and not as someone who like had an idea to do something different with it. He's never performed it anywhere else so they're probably not comfortable improvising it. He said he was thinking about doing it on tour, I wish corona hadn't ruined everything because by now he would have been comfortable with it enough to have done a version where he mixes it up a little bit. Or maybe not since I think newer artists are kind of afraid of changing up classics ever since Taylor Swift got so much heat for her cover of September by earth, wind and fire.

      A S I know exactly what you mean. I couldn’t watch the entire interview - didn’t like how he interrupted When Harry was speaking. I didn’t know much of Harry Styles music until it came up on TH-cam and I immediately clicked on it to see what this cover sounded like. I’m impressed by Harry and his band. Great cover of a song that was a favourite of mine back then, and still is.

      @@noelenehazell8454 Harry's music and musical taste are amazing. His vocal tone is beautiful! What irritated me about the interview was Howard always implying stupid stuff, "this song had to be about someone you were sleeping with", "you've got daddy issues" (excuse me???), You're going to seduce your therapist". He shows zero respect, and his assumptions show that he knows nothing about Harry. Not everyone has their head in the gutter 24/7, Howard.

      A S T I totally agree. A lot of Sterns comments about women and Harry lacking a father figure were just downright rude. Harry has a loving dad and had a much loved and admired step father until he sadly passed away. Harry and his bands performances on this show were second to none but Howard Stern I can do without.

    • @shannonn9575
      @shannonn9575 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is Howard’s interview style. Ultimately, he’s better at interviewing people closer to his own age, but he didn’t treat Harry any differently than any of the other countless people he’s interviewed throughout the years.

    Yeah I think right before performing this song he told Howard that he thinks that Peter Gabriel album is the best mixed record of all time. He got in his studio and claimed he had to play this song. Great reaction! Would love more Harry reactions/reviews.

    • @graceelizabeth3050
      @graceelizabeth3050 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cassidy Arles which is why I said small changes to SOME. Ultralight Beam, he took a lot of liberties with just by leaving a lot of stuff out of it. I like his rendition better. I’ve noticed he leaves the classic stuff alone. Girl Crush, can’t really change that up or it would have ruined the whole thing and would have been a different song. I think Harry could cover anything and make it sound good though. So proud of him for how far he’s come.

    The very first comment from "J" pretty much summarized everything what one needs to know about Harry's approach when covering songs he himself a huge fan of. He is practically a geek when it's about the music of the 60s-70s-80s
    He's usually very true to the original versions. Exception is Ultra light beam - where his version is even better than the original.
    What the others haven't mentioned yet, that when it's about his own songs, he does make changes when he performs them live vs. the album versions.
    Sometimes only small changes, which seems like he had a better idea after the album version released :) I would mention "Eversince New York" - live performance on SNL live 2017.
    th-cam.com/video/3Jx3wWiFUfw/w-d-xo.html
    Other cases he comes up with an acoustic or a bit stripped down version for a live show.
    For example "Lights up" on SNL live 2019 - with a gospel choir and trumpet
    th-cam.com/video/OzkkchcSBkA/w-d-xo.html
    Or "Watermelon sugar" form the very same show
    th-cam.com/video/-3jOuuJ3WbQ/w-d-xo.html
    Or the most notable example is "What makes you beautiful" - this was One Direction's very first hit and music video back in 2011 (a 4k enhanced version just has been released for the 10th anniversary of the band)
    th-cam.com/video/S3IQwuYX_ls/w-d-xo.html
    And this is Harry's adult version of the song, a lot of fan of the original hate what he did with the song. I personally think his new version is killer, while the original was only a catchy bubble gum pop song
    th-cam.com/video/mQT7Xby85xg/w-d-xo.html
    Would be great to hear your reaction to one of these songs.
    Oh, before I forget: Peter Gabriel also loved Harry's cover. He tweeted him 2x clapping hands :))

    They weren’t gonna do a different take on a classic on Howard Stern... you don’t understand the kind of abuse they would’ve gotten if they’d improved. He tried it with Ultralight Beam and Kanye West fans dragged him to the pits of hell.

    great reaction! i can understand how an artist/song has true meaning to someone it can be difficult to compare at all to the original, but i liked this one a lot, and i do love peter gabriel as well, if you want more of an understanding of how he started his mom signed him up for the X factor when he was 16 and then he got through and put into the boyband, which had their 10 year anniversary yesterday, and they blew up bigger than the Beatles which is- insane to me. they released 5 albums and went on 5 tours in 5 years, which i never realized how much that is, their management was- :/ but later on one of the members zayn left for his mental health, and then they said they were going on an 18 month hiatus but it’s been like 4 years, from then he released hs1 and fine line which are both outstanding albums, if possible could you react to his cover of girl crush? and you should also check out his cover of the chain, but my personal favorite is girl crush sorry this was so long lol

    I'm sure, if they changed it, hardcore Peter Gabriel's fans would say he butchered it and he shouldn't have touched this perfection and should have stick to original sound. Personally I love the original and I certainly love Harry's version))
    I think Harry is one of the realest and authentic artists out there now. He's so genuine in what he does, it's admirable. What I see here is a reverance to the original artist. When he makes a cover, it somestimes close to original because he just adore the author too much. The Chain is close but it's still amazing and the arrangement is a little different still. You should check it out - The Chain (live at bbc radio 1 live lounge). Another great cover is Girl Crush originaly by Little Big Town. And of course his duet with Stevie Nicks. They sang Landslide and Leather and Lace at one of his first solo live shows and imo it's endearing.
    For originality you should react to his original songs more. I'd recommend Two Ghosts, Kiwi, Sweet Creature, Falling, Medicine, She, Fine Line, Cherry.

    Good example and I don't think you have reviewed yet is disturbed version of Simon and gardunkles sound of silence. Paul Simon enjoyed their version so much and was impressed that he officially handed the song off to disturbed and told them., it's your song now. Surely Simon saying that should be enough to convince a guy like you to bring to the shed.
