The Haitian Revolution is completely separate from France and the French Revolution. It was a war against slavery so obviously native or African slaves had been fighting before then. They didn't include Makandal's Rebellion. It's the precursor to the Haitian Revolution were he and Boukman tried to poison the white slave owners. But it failed after someone was tortured for information.
The Haitian government was the very first one to recognize and send embassy to the revolutionary government of Greece during the war of the Greek independence- a courtesy of people that used to be enslaved to " brothers " that are fighting for their freedom ❤❤❤❤❤
It's fascinating that this colony was so close to revolution that you had multiple factions, all of which were aiming for different goals and opposed each other as much as the government they wanted to change or overthrow.
And in the end that in-fighting between the priviledged classes meant the slave uprising for once could succede. If only the free-black and poor-white weren't such assholes, and the rich-white so greedy.. justice might never have been served... ehm, never mind then :D

Because of this revolt many other islands in the Caribbean revolted against the masters including my own island (curaçao)when former slaves of Haiti sailed to curaçao to help start the big revolt.

I have my fingers crossed and I'll wait until the end; there's a video with millions of views that does an atrocious job of covering this topic. I do like the fact that the map for the colony of Saint Domingue is accurate as I often see people using the modern day map of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. EDIT: Another thing that is accurate is that a large number of the slaves that were arriving had military experience fighting in civil wars in their homeland. So the French colonist were actually importing a trained army.

This affects me personally. I have Haitian heritage and my family took part in the revolution. I've always been proud of my family heritage. After the revolution my family took in the new goverment for several years till the dictator took over and many of my family were excuted or fled to the US. Thank you for doing a show on it 🇭🇹

The Extra Credits actually did recommend this podcast (and Mike's previous one about the history of Rome) a couple of times, like in the previous episode of "Lies", when talking about the upcoming series, or in the special prequel episode of the Gracchi brothers series about Gracchus the Elder, which was written by Mike Duncan himself.
Just to clarify, the revolution was not fought with machetes, at the revolution time, the former slaves had a well disciplined and well equipped and powerful army fully battle tested by driving the British and the Spanish out of Saint Dommingue.
In fairness, this is complex. In other fairness, even a very incomplete explanation can help familiarize people with the basic terms and people's involved and make more accurate telling easier later.
I saw this notification and did a double take. I am Haitian and I thought that I’d never see a series devoted on my country’s/ancestors history. This is such an important event in history. unfortunately the repercussions have stunted the potential rise of this country’s greatness because it did (and still does) have the potential of being successful. I’m just grateful for this series because now thousands of people around the world can learn about this monumental event in history that they probably won’t ever learn about in textbooks. I can’t wait to see the rest of the series and I thank extra credit for shining a light on my people’s history. I could shed a tear ❤️
What I like abt this channel is how their story telling and illustration are both equally entertaining and flowing seamlessly. More often I listen to the channel while driving, yet I could understand the stories clearly.
I read about this a few years back, and the Wikipedia pages on various topics related to this are frustratingly spotty in places, or at least were at the time, so this is amazing and helps summarize matters into something highly digestable that'll serve as a good jumping off point. It's super useful, too, and this info is relevant to some historical fantasy fiction I'm writing with a couple of friends. Thanks!
I have wanted to see a video on this. The first person in my family who came to America was a French slave owner who had a plantation. He was killed in the revolution but they didn’t kill his wife and child and let them escape to New Orleans. And after this my family just stayed in Louisiana.

I love Haitians independence. I am so excited! I hope extra credits covers the bad in both sides. However they are known for bias unfortunately. For those who don’t know, after the Haitians become independent they burned the entire nation. All plantations and infrastructure. It economically crippled them and they still deal with it today.

This is a great topic to talk about. I hope you'll evoke Louverture's complicated role, the British turncoating from the slavers to the slaves, the republic abolishing slavery, Napoleon's biggest mistake in re-establishing it, and Dessaline's gruesome fate.
One of the most interesting and unique revolutions in the world. Happened roughly at the same time as the revolution against the Ottoman rule in my native Serbia and bearing some interesting parallels with it (albeit with the skin color rather than religion being the main rallying factor although the real divide was largely social/judicial in both cases). For those who don’t know, after the Haitians become independent they burned the entire nation. All plantations and infrastructure. It economically crippled them and they still deal with it today.
Thank you for making a video on the Haitian Revolution! We learned about it in AP World and my teacher dedicated an entire day on it, describing how underrated this event is in history.

@@HexCopper Dr massacred Haitians in 1937 to scapegoat a recession, brought Haitians to work in the batayes, and begged the UN to stay in Haiti even though they know Haitians hated foreign troops.

Fun trivia: the haitian revolution was a thorn in the side of america when it itself became an empire, so haiti was invaded multiple times by american marines last time being I think it was 2008 or 09.

This is a great topic to talk about. I hope you'll evoke Louverture's complicated role, the British turncoating from the slavers to the slaves, the republic abolishing slavery, Napoleon's biggest mistake in re-establishing it, and Dessaline's gruesome fate.
One of the most interesting and unique revolutions in the world. Happened roughly at the same time as the revolution against the Ottoman rule in my native Serbia and bearing some interesting parallels with it (albeit with the skin color rather than religion being the main rallying factor although the real divide was largely social/judicial in both cases). Can't wait for the sequels, with rise and fall of Francois Toussant Louverture. Keep up the good work 👍.
