Seeing the importance of Havan, scientists of National Institute of Botanical Research, Lucknow also did a research on whether Havan actually purifies the environment. They found that it destroys viruses after collecting the Havan material mentioned in the texts. Then they also researched about different types of smoke and saw that by burning just 1 kg of mango wood, the virus present in the air did not reduce much, but as soon as half a kilo of Havya material was put on it, it was present in the room within an hour. The bacterial level was reduced by 94%. In addition, they further tested the bacteria present in the room’s air and found that 24 hours after the room door was opened and all the smoke was gone, the level of bacteria was 96 percent below normal. After repeated testing, it was found that the effect of this one-time smoke lasted for a month and the virus level in the air of that room was much lower than normal even after 30 days.
This report has also been published in the Research Journal of Ethnopharmacology in December 2007.
It was written in the report that the Havan destroys the bacteria that harm the plants and crops along with humans. The most important fact is noteworthy here is that the formaldehyde obtained from the rituals of Yagya is also used in the treatment of influenza. Given the side effects of spraying mass alcohol sanitizer, the law of morning and evening yajna can prove to be a good option without any side effects for the purification of the environment.

The purpose of Hawan is to enhance the energy of the human body and make it healthy and progressive. The therapeutic value of Hawan is based on the ingredients used (Table 1). One of the main ingredients used is cow “Ghee” or “Clarified Butter” which has enormous beneficial properties. This ghee when burnt like oil will produce natural fumes that heal the respiratory system and clear any blood clots and bacterium affecting the nasal, lungs and veins. In the bible, the Book of Samuels, Chapter 2, “the burning of sins, using the sticks and clarified butter” infers that ghee was frequently used for fire rituals in biblical times. Essential oil constituents that penetrate the nasal passages, skin or lungs have direct actions on the autonomic nervous system that can be grouped as relaxing or stimulating in terms of basic responses such as heart rate, blood pressure and respiration, in addition to localized dermal and bronchial effects.36-42 The direct neuro-pharmacological properties of an essential oil, aroma of the oil may exert a pleasant response via the olfactory system in turn, altering the hypothalamic control of hormones and neurotransmitters. The medium chain fatty acids in pure Ghee get converted into ketones and supply the epilepsy patient brain with the energy it needs to survive and if given on a continual basis will support processes in the brain that are involved in healing and repair.
Another important ingredient in Hawan is “Camphor” from the plant Cinnamomum camphora. When the camphor is burnt in the fire ritual, the body’s breathing system is cleared quickly and the person will experience a “high” or elevated feeling during the ceremony.

If you use the right amount of ghee and samagri (and the samagri should not be adulterated) and the right kind of firewood, you will reduce pollution as well as reduce microbes around you. When the havan is performed the air touches the fire, gets purified and becomes lighter in nature. So this light air goes up and replaces the cold/ the impure air and this process continues (as we studied in geography ; how the lighter air from the plains replace the heavier air from the poles) and the air keep getting purified till the ritual is being performed.

While performing the ritual of havan it has to be kept in mind that there should absolute combustion of the material in the havan samagri to tap the maximum benefit of the havan.
I remember the fact as a child when we used to attend the havan ceremony in Arya Samaj that the seniors always laid stress on how to arrange the samidha (the wood used in havan) in the havan kund. They ensured it that enough space is left for the proper circulation of the air, and moment there was smoke; seniors used to say loudly “ghee dalo aur Agni prajawalit karo” means that pour enough ghee so that it catches fire as ghee is known to help in the process of combustion.
Other than purifying the atmosphere Havan has the capacity to influence the local rains Since, the havan is performed while chanting the holy mantras; so the havan ritual charges the atmosphere with positive energy also. Havan smoke is like inhalation therapy derived from Ayurveda and as described above it relaxes the mind and heals the body and has positive effects spiritually too because of the holy verses (mantras) chanted during the havan.
Earlier we didn’t have any proof for such beliefs but now because many foreigners are getting involved in such practices - they are conducting experiments with proper scientific equipment to prove the claims made by the founders of these practices. One such example is Agnihotra - It is a Yagna performed at the time of sunrise and sunset. It was claimed that it helps purifying the atmosphere and reduces the air pollution. People with scientific mind had an obvious question that whenever something burns it uses oxygen and adds more carbon in the atmosphere; so how come this ritual could reduce the pollution?

Agnihotra Effect on Bacterial Population: A preliminary experiment was carried out to study the effect of Agnihotra on the bacterial population in a room where Agnihotra was performed. For this study, two rooms of equal dimensions (13¼’ x 8’ x 11’) were selected. In both rooms fire was prepared from dried cowdung cakes in copper pyramids and the basal reading of number of microorganisms in both the rooms was taken by exposing blood agar plates at four corners of the room for 10 minutes. This was done exactly half an hour before Agnihotra time. Agnihotra was performed exactly at sunset in one of the rooms. Bacterial counts were taken again in both the rooms in a similar manner at half hour intervals. Thus readings were taken in both the rooms up to two hours after performance of Agnihotra. It was quite interesting to note that microbial counts in the room where Agnihotra was performed were reduced by 91.4% whereas the room where only fire was generated did not show appreciable changes in the microbial counts. This leads one to think that it was the process of Agnihotra which was responsible for the reduction of bacterial counts and not the mere presence of fire.
Two other similar experiments revealed similar findings. The phenomenon could be explained by giving two reasons:
- Agnihotra fumes are rich in formaldehyde and other substances which have inhibitory effect on microorganisms.
- A phenomenon like smog formation and its diffusion in the upper strata might be a likely postulation.
In the regions of North and South poles, many times, carbon particles accumulate to form a layer called “smog”. When fire is lit the hot currents push the smog into the upper strata and it is diffused in such a way that the carbon particles are no longer harmful in the residual concentration. In the present study perhaps
Agnihotra fumes might have dissociated the microorganisms in such a way that the residual population was no more harmful and was well within tolerable limit to human beings.
