My general understanding is that increased glutamate activity may contribute to cell death from glutamate excitotoxicity and play a role in some motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease, and drugs which reduce glutamate activity have shown some promise. But the details of this are not an area of expertise for me so I'm happy to be corrected if I'm missing something.
