Bought my first Leeds replica shirt around 1972 from Arthur Clues' shop and it was Arthur who served me and my Dad and had time to ask me about my school team. Lovely bloke.
I missed Arthur Clues. If I'd been a Leeds boy I'd probably have seen him play for Hunslet, but I was fae Glasgow and knew nothing of rugby league until arriving in Leeds, aged 12. My first knowledge of the game was through his sports shop, very near a model aircraft shop in Merrion Street where I used to spend such money as I had on balsa wood etc. He would have been just one or two years retired then, and "Jock" was soon informed by other lads who he was. It was not until later I learned he'd previously played for Leeds as all my friends were Hunslet supporters and they didn't mention that! Will there ever be real hard-fought Leeds derbies with an uncertain result again?
Have fond memories of my younger days spent shopping and browsing in Arthur's shop. Lovely bloke to talk to.
