    I wish that they kept fey passage. Imagining a gaint unraveling into a string of light and going through a keyhole is pure whimsical delight. Going into someone's body would definitely be a no go because like the name suggests you need an open space on the other side to appear in.

He can fly in, rage, hit the barbarian wild magic table, then start whacking with a battle ax, which he can use two-handed. He's a short little punk fairy with lavender skin and dragonfly wings, and tattoos.

    6:23 for barbarian fairy you'd have no reason to invest in much str anyways since you can't reliably use heavy weapons so just invest in dex and con flavor it as you being so small you're extremely hard to hit and use a rapier if you're going all in for barb levels or a shortbow and rapier if you decide to be a rogue with levels of barbarian to be a nimble durable powerhouse with pretty decent saving throws and ac

      Another idea would be ancestral guardian and reflavor the spirits as a swarm of fairies to make it difficult to attack others also dump str since you won't need it for heavy weapons since a rapier would be your best weapon and you wouldn't have to focus on 3-4 ability scores you could just have minimum 13 str incase you ever want to multiclass (also only two abilities from base barbarian rely on str and that's the rage damage bonus, which is minuscule and hardly matters, and reckless attack which is a small positive and a huge negative because any creature that attacks you will have advantage until the start of your turn which could easily get you killed for example I know someone who played a barbarian in a game I was in and they fought a Dullahan and the barbarian reckless attacked and as such the Dullahan had advantage and crit which means the barbarian lost their head and died, the ability is only a detriment

    honestly, the 5e fairy race is very disappointing for me. They removed pretty much everything that actually makes you Fey other than the creature type, which goes against established lore with other races, such as those that have Fey blood somewhere in their history, and as such gain things like advantage against charm effects, or the inability to magically be put to sleep. The reason this goes against the lore already established with the previously released races for the edition is that you only need a tiny fraction of Fey blood to gain these benefits, but a full blooded Fey, and one of the ones meant to be on the higher end of the magically inclined? nah. I can understand why they decided to go with having the race be small sized, since for some reason 5e is afraid of having player characters be anything other than medium or small, but if you're going to do so, you should leave a race meant to be tiny out of the options all together imo, at least the Fey Passage ability allowed you to roleplay as though you were tiny at least sometimes, but they decided you aren't allowed to have fun with having the race meant to be tiny at least think it was tiny. personally, I don't know whether I would have preferred them completely leave the fairy race out of 5e as being playable or not, based on how they decided to butcher it.

    • @EvelynNdenial

      they should have done fairies right or not at all. introduce a level adjustment for monsterous races with any powerful abilities, like the fairies casting, and write some god damn creature size rules.

    If I was a DM for a fairy PC (or knowing the people who DM for me I think this would be a valid ask) I would allow a version of Fey Passage with the stipulation that you have to be in Reduced form from the Enlarge/Reduce spell. That way it keeps the cool aesthetic gameplay mechanic, but offers limitations in terms of amount of times the PC is able to do it per day and the time limit of one minute.

    Honestly one of the biggest downers of the switch from UA to the book was the removal of the wingless option, only because I just didn't want my fairy to have wings.
    That said, nearly every character of mine is going to be a fairy.

    • @Vespuchian
      @Vespuchian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an easy talk with your DM. I'm running a Fairy right now and cosmetically they don't have wings but follow normal flight rules. The kicker for the rules was that the UA specified that Faries 'could hover' and that the flight was explicitly magical, which means they wouldn't fall if they were knocked prone, had speed reduced to zero, or otherwise unable to move (thus, zero downsides to flying all the time).
      Rules-wise removing 'can hover' means flight isn't situationally overpowered, but as for physical wings? That's cosmetic and an easy ask to the DM.

  • @Mariwend

    they should technically have free access to misty step. The way the spell works is that you slip through ethereal passages that are basically mini feywilds. (Honestly i would personally say they were in the astral but in cannon they aren't,) So a fairy of any type should be able to recognize and use these passages. Even a druid that knows barely anything about the feywild can do it sometimes. Some warlocks get better things than that.

    How does enlarge/reduce replace being able to slip through a one inch gap, I thought they were the size of halflings so like 3 feet tall that means the absaloute minimum height you'd get with the spell is one foot. A one foot tall thing is not getting through a one inch gap unless I'm imagining this wrong.

      Contortionists can fit through almost anywhere they can fit their head through, and a humanoid one foot tall may very well have a head only an inch across, making it possible to squeeze through the 1 inch hole.
      As far as I'm aware, Fae creatures don't grow old, and in fact, the more youthful-looking and beautiful the faerie, the older and more dangerous it probably is. As such they only die if something kills them, and in some cases like familiars, even death just sends them home.
