That's bullshit. If lightning reaches an appliance, you're already too late. A fuse is too slow BY FAR to protect against lightning. And, most lightning will most likely enter your home as a power surge: if you're lucky, the surge protector in an extension cord will do it's job and cause a short, which will cause the main circuit breaker to trip. But there is almost nothing you can do against a direct strike: wires will just vaporize, fuses could even stay healthy as the voltage just arcs over the terminals on the PCB.
Only metal vehicles with metal roofs will protect you from lightning: fiberglass vehicles, like Corvettes, and golf carts with no metal roofs will NOT protect you from lightning! It is not the rubber tires that protect you from lightning; it is having a metal enclosure around you that protects you. If lightning strikes an all-metal vehicle, the charge will jump from the wheel's metal rim to the ground below it after it passes through all the metal on the vehicle.
