    I have several varieties of avocados at home and I like Pinkerton the most. It tastes great. And it gives so much fruit for its size, especially when it's a young tree and your anxious to reap the fruit of your labor. Pinkerton grows very slow. So it is advantageous to grafted on an existing tree already, which I did over the Sir Prize which grew fast but have very little fruits.

    My grandfather (RIP) and his brother created the Pinkerton avocado many decades ago. Their last names were Pinkerton which is why it is called the "Pinkerton" avocado. ☺

      The way you describe seems like there was cross breeding, research and development involved. But was it supposed to be a volunteer seedling tree that sprouted in the Pinkerton Ranch? Two years ago I went to the Pinkerton Ranch Rd in Saticoy searching for the mother tree, but it seemed like the tree and the ranch were all gone now.

    Hi Greg, I love Pinkerton avocados! They are so tasty and such a small tree. I put my order in a few days ago and I look forward to eating them soon. Great video Greg. Thanks for all your work.

    Been waiting for this one, thx. Grafted a seedling to Pinkerton over a year ago, grew over 11 feet, and now fruit developing, may not set a lot, but the baby avos don't drop like a lot of other varities, some the size of quail eggs. Started flowering in December, and still is. Love em.

    Does the neck of the fruit develop immediately or does it develop later? I bought a supposed Pinkerton tree and the leaves could fit the description, but not the now quite large fruit. It's barely got any bumps and no neck to speak of. It's larger than a hass, maybe almost 10cm long now. Could this still be a Pinkerton? Otherwise I guess it could be a Bacon or similar. Cheers

      Pinkertons are not very necky in locations close to the ocean. Is that where you are?
      The young fruit on a Pinkerton that will be necky are already somewhat necky at the young stage.

      @@gregalderdotcom Thank you very much for answering so quickly! I do not love very close to the ocean, at it's nearest it's about 200 kilometers to the northwest of us. Our climate is borderline oceanic/maritime and nights in late summer and fall get very cold. Is that maybe the determining factor? Or rather high humidity?

    Greg:
    Need some advice on tips to save my GEM tree that I shipped back from California recently.
    Can I save this tree?
    I sent a small GEM tree back to FL, from my Anaheim trip, in a 10" Quik tube from HomeDepot. When I replanted it, the tree stalk and a small root ball separated from the dirt in the container. It completely fell apart. I've read how sensitive the Avocado roots are to that kind of trauma.
    I watered it thoroughly when replanted and I'm adding additional water every other day to give those shocked roots enough to survive. I live on the beach in the FLA Gulf coast where I planted this tree in a mix of beach sand and topsoil which drains immediately. (If I dig a 1' hole, it's difficult to fill it as the water drains away into the sand so quickly.)
    Is there anything else I can do to save this tree?
    Many thanks;
    Jim

    Hearing the word precocious gave me hope, I have planted a pinkerton from seed three years ago, do you have any idea how long till it fruit ??

    • @frankyancy1347
      @frankyancy1347 ปีที่แล้ว

      A grafted pinkerton can bear a good crop the third year, my 3 year old has over 70 fruits...but an ungrafted seedling can take many years before it fruits and then may not fruit true to the variety.

      About one year. But the fruit can hang on the tree and maintain good quality up to around 16 months after flowering.

      Hi Ayam, Are you sure you are eating fruit from a grafted Pinkerton tree? Maybe you're not eating actual Pinkerton fruit or maybe the variety just does not perform well in your environment.

      @@gregalderdotcom i also thought so, but it happen to most people who plant pinkerton in my country. Other variety is fine like hass, gem, shephard, reed. Only pinkerton that come out not performing. And i know this bcos we have avocado farmer chit chat group.
