I'd love to see more midweek meal challenges. James' looks really good, I think I'll give it a try soon. Especially the whole grilled leek is something I probably wouldn't have come up with, I usually use leek only for soup.
Do one "pass it on" challenge where the ones who have completed their turn get to watch the next person cook but not allowed to say anything... I'd love to see their frustration.. oh and Jamie definitely should be the last one to cook..
I made this suggestion a few months ago. I absolutely love that other people want to see the same thing and are commenting, better chance of actually seeing it!
I wouldn’t consider this a weekday meal because both Barry and James used so many pots, pans, and utensils. So here’s a challenge: I’d really want to see a small apartment challenge. I live in a studio apartment with only a single induction stove, a toaster oven, and a microwave, and limited tools. And because of this I really don’t cook all that much. I wonder how a chef and a normal would fare in a situation like this. EDIT 1: Make it a Chef vs Chef. I’d like to see if Ben and James can make a stunning meal without having multiple stoves, an oven, and other tools at their disposal. bwahahahaha EDIT 2: Idea from Jemima1377: Just one plate, a kettle, a microwave, one pot, one pan, one knife, a peeler, one cutting board, two bowls, one plate, one square meter to use for everything combined (except the hand washing and the finished plates, which are not included in space or utensils). Ben vs. James, three course meal in 1 hour, space and dishes MUST be washed at the end of the time as well.
Ariella Campos but the challenge isn’t just one pan. It’s the fact that you use a single induction stove (very finicky) vs a proper gas stove, and maybe just a single knife, chopping board, and pan FOR EVERYTHING. 😂😂😂 yes I’m evil lol
Marius Periwinkle been living in a studio for 2+ years now and while I cooked at first, it’s simply not feasible if you work 10+ hours a day and come home exhausted all the time. All the effort and washing up cooking at home creates often isn’t worth it, so I’m curious to see how the chefs (and even the normals) tackle this. Hope they see this comment.
Jamie: I was promised four plates.” Mike: “That criteria was ticked but you can eat them afterwards.” Jamie: “Great.” What a Jamie thing to point out 😂
I'm very impressed with how well Barry handled himself for the first 25 minutes. Only started falling apart in the last few minutes, and put up a good looking plate of food.
“That seems like a lot of garlic” *later in the video* “You May have used garlic in this-“ Let’s all be clear, garlic is amazing, you measure that sh!t with your heart and don’t let the haters stop you
Only thing better than garlic is more garlic. I highly recommend the receipe ‚chicken with 40 cloves of garlic‘. It’s amazing! BTW to peel a lot of garlic, break them apart and soak in boiling water for 2 minutes. So much faster and does not change the taste.
I think for this one I would have picked Barry! For the next one I think I’d like them to pick their own basket but secretly they’re picking their opponent’s basket id like to see Ben and Mike go head to head.
I was rewatching some of your older vids and realised we haven't seen any bloopers for a while. Would absolutely love to see them if you have any, thanks guys! 😁
I've never been here this early before! Woohooo! Fridge cam! I would love to see the new pass it on as a "beat a takeaway" challenge as most takeaways take about 45 minutes to an hour to get to you. Can you guys do better in the same amount time?
Yeah I'd love that, order a takeaway and you have until it gets there to coin the same thing as you ordered and then you blind taste test which is better
I yelled through the house, "A new Sorted!"... and my 11 year old son came running to watch it with me! So, thank you fellas for letting my son and me have SOMETHING in common at his age!
When I was that age, my mom and I would watch something on food network (or Rachael Ray or something), go to the grocery store to get the ingredients (or she would get them because she had watched the episode earlier in the day) and we would cook the food that we just watched get made. It was honestly so much fun and it prepared me so much when I went off to university.
Paul Bocuse, a very famous French chef that started his career in the 60's/70's, participated in the first new formats of cooking shows on the french networks at the time, on how to make dinner for a family with affordable ingredients and with a High end restaurant quality (some sort of Less angry Gordon Ramsay). And when seasoning, he would always says " Always, ALWAYS, use freshly ground black pepper, never anything else!"
Ben knowing EXACTLY what James was looking for in the herbs makes me so giddy. It's like chefs have a separate mindset that only they can access and all share thoughts with each other. It just goes to show how experts in their fields are so good at their craft that they know exactly what each other are going to do. I strive to be that good at anything in my life
Boys, I had an idea for an episode: just in time for Mother's Day - Homestyle Chefs. The boys describe and cook their favorite meals they had while growing up (just like mom used to make), and then the chefs create 'cheffy' versions of their favorite meals.
I love how Mike's all annoyed at how Beat the Chef Barry is different to Pass it On Barry! 😂😂😂😂 There is a difference though! Both dishes looked really good! Though, I'd probably prefer James' as I'm not a huge fan of garlic.
That's the earliest I've ever been to one of your vids, great as always, keep it up, or else I don't know what I should re-watch while procrastinating school work!
I can't believe James' meal took half an hour....the mash looked amazing as did everything on his plate....but both dishes required oven, multiple pots/pans, microwave, chopping boards...James also used quite alot of bowls, as well as other equipment, such as masher, whisk, etc. That's an awful lot of washing up. It's prob second nature, he's a chef, so he wouldn't exactly cook like a normal, or be subjected to normal constraints. There's no way Im going to that much trouble to make a mash and hollandaise from scratch midweek though. A midweek meal challenge should come with a restriction of tools/equipment/utensils/crockery, and see who could make a better dish with that constraint!
I loved the out-takes at the end - Barry dropping the first spud, then ducking the other two - and James catching all three. Also: is "pancake cod" now a recognized dish?

I wonder if it would be possible for the judge not to know who participated in the challenge until the end? The judge wouldn't know if there were two normals, two chefs, or a combo of normal and chef--seems like that could remove any potential bias. Plus, it would be fun to see the judge guessing who the cooks were based on the dish presented. Well, let's be honest, it would be fun to see the judge guess a normal for the chef's dish....lol
Watching this it felt like Barry's confidence/chance of success started off pretty high and slowly descended, as it were, while James began slightly restrained and became the more confident the closer he got to the finished dish.

Hello from Texas! Love the "Chef vs Normal" vids! I'd like to see "Normal vs Normal vs Normal - Mystery Box" challenges with both Chefs judging, scoring 1-5 (or 1-10), then the dish with the highest added score wins! Or do the same but with "Chef vs Chef" and have all three Normals judge the same way. As always, loving y'all from across the pond!
Love this! Could you start adding the mystery box ingredient list to the description? I would love to see comments about what other people would make with the same things, and think about it myself.
I like it when you explain why you're doing something - that gives me transferable knowledge I can use across the board in other areas of cooking. Top stuff.
Yes they have, it's a sponsored series called Now Cook It. They have videos on knife skills, poaching an egg, etc. Very beginner friendly. They also have episodes about recommending high end vs. budget kitchen utensils and equipment by the chefs.
Basics I can tell you without pictures(I was a chef for 5 years) Chefs knife is pretty much good for anything, paring knife is for finer stuff like coring tomatoes etc, unless you really wanna spice things up and start filtering your own fish and butchering your own meat (don't know why you would) those are the only two knives you really need in a home kitchen. In terms of knife grip you hold the blade between your thumb and for finger with the rest of your hand on the handle, this gives you much more control over your knife and makes it much less likely to slip out of your hand, it also means you can put more power through your wrist if needed for chopping firmer things like pumpkin, turnip etc. With the hand not holding the knife make curl your fingers down so the finger tips are touching the thing your chopping and rest the flat of your knife against the knuckles, this makes it less likely to cut your self because if the knife moves it doesn't have far to travel so less momentum going into your finger and you're more likely to just stop it. Finally the most important thing I can think of is parallels and straight lines, watch James and Ben their knife is perpendicular to the board and parallel to the edge of the board, as is the thing they're cutting unless they want it to be cut on an angle in which case they'll move the thing not the knife, they're also square on to the work surface with head straight down this position gives you the most amount of control. Hope this isn't too long and helps 😊
Looking forward to being a part of the sorted club in 2020. I love the little tips about seasoning the flour and finishing the mash that Ben and James give. I find little tips like what I should be looking for to be super helpful when I'm in the kitchen. Cheers guys!
Can we have a pass it on in which one person is secretly chosen to sabotage the dish (Person 2/3/4). I think it would be very amusing ;} Also more reaction videos to pass it ons please
When Jamie looked at the herbs and at a glance saw he didnt have what he wanted and without apparent conversation Ebbers followed his train of thought to Thyme was such a Chef moment.
Love beat the chef! Two things I'd love to see return/more off: costumes and the chefs table. Also, have you guys had any thoughts of including weekly meal prep ideas?
It's an older video, but a couple things to point out to anyone else watching: 1) Have everything you're going to cook within reach. This means food, seasonings, cookware. If it's not in sight, it's a waste of time. 2) When cooking multiple components, timers or cues are your friend. 3) Goes with point 2, but start with the items that take the longest to prepare. 4) Have a clear vision for the dish. Moments of inspiration are fine, but bringing in a brand new component can derail the timing on everything else. 5) Remain calm and in control. Panicking in a kitchen space can lead to serious injury or a waste of food. 6) Taste throughout. Alternatively, season lightly and then taste at the end before applying a finishing touch. 7) Presentation is secondary to flavour. Prioritize the taste over how it appears. 8) Have fun. I enjoy the Sorted videos - it's a very different format from the usual cooking stuff I watch, so I hope you guys keep at it!
When are you bringing back ultimate battles?! I miss the 3 normals all having their own recipe and messing with eachother along the way, those are some of my favorite episodes to this very day. Please bring it back!

I miss the old into song!😢 : "I'm gooey in the middle , baby let me bake"
Looking forward to being a part of the sorted club in 2020.
I love the little tips about seasoning the flour and finishing the mash that Ben and James give.
I find little tips like what I should be looking for to be super helpful when I'm in the kitchen.
Cheers guys!
This is the coolest I've ever seen Barry . Well done both of you
Can we have a pass it on in which one person is secretly chosen to sabotage the dish (Person 2/3/4). I think it would be very amusing ;}
Also more reaction videos to pass it ons please
That is a good idea, mwahahaha
@@SortedFood is this Jamie speaking? Coz I can see Jamie speaking and making evil plans 😂
They do that on their own
Plot twist. It ends up their most successful one yet
We need more of the ones with the wrench thrown into the challenge like they used to do
No one:
James the CHEF: OW I’ve just forked myself! 😂❤️
More of these please!!! Love beat the chef!
When Jamie looked at the herbs and at a glance saw he didnt have what he wanted and without apparent conversation Ebbers followed his train of thought to Thyme was such a Chef moment.
I've never heard of eggs and fish being on the same plate. I'm going to give it a go it sounds interesting.
Shirley Castle
It’s a lovely combo. The runny egg provides a nice creamy texture and flavour with the fish.
Love beat the chef! Two things I'd love to see return/more off: costumes and the chefs table. Also, have you guys had any thoughts of including weekly meal prep ideas?
Highlight of my Sundays!
9:07 "It does also show you what's very possible in 30 minutes..." Come on Ben! :D
Barry turned his hob off, what's happening?
It's an older video, but a couple things to point out to anyone else watching:
1) Have everything you're going to cook within reach.
The outtake is brilliant. Look at James acing that catch!!
James' mash is everything 😍
"I'm going to take a leek"(my inner child "teehee, he said leek")
James' reaction: "STOP CALLING IT A BLOODY PANCAKE!"
I could watch these Beat the Chefs all day
I love this series so much, please carry on!
So I'm guessing that James no longer has a runny bottom?
“ I’m taken a leek “ did no one else catch them laughing in the background when Barry said that lol a little after 4 min mark
Barry: I'm gonna do what I always do
Me: yup that's my life
