Great review Rob. Bruichladdich really hit the ball out of the park with the peat levels in their Octomore expressions. Cheers 🥃!

On point Rob, these are surprisingly approachable. Tried 5.1 this weekend and was impressed. 7.4, v8, 10yo seem to be what’s avail near me. “Wheel of straw” cracked me up man! I’ve watched a good number of your vids and its interesting to see your journey, the palette develop thru the years.

Jason Fisk lol couldn’t think of the words bail of hay for the life of me in the moment. They really are great whiskies. I’m always impressed by them.

Thanks for walking us through another Octomore. I will re-watch when I get closer to buying . Sounds like I may be more interested in the one you did on Friday.

Ya definitely the better of the two. If I were you though, I'd be scouting mom and pop shops for the 6.3 or 7.3.

Grat review! I think a big difference in peat is the fact, that Bruichladdich gets its peated malt from maltsters from the mainland. So they use mainland peat, wich is very different to islay peat used in port ellen maltings for laphroaig, lagavulin, caol ila and bowmore...

      That definitely makes sense.

As a bbq enthusiast, these Octomores sound awesome with the smoked ribs or pork smell. I get that with the Bruichladdich PC. Cheers buddy

Nice one Rob. Glad to see you review the Octomore series. I will try to get this one if I see it. My favorites are 6.3, 8.3 and 7.3, in that order. 8.3 is nearly a tie to the 6.3. Although I should say these 3 are the only Octomores I’ve tried so far. 7.3 wasn’t a favorite for me with the wine finish but it has improved with time. All that means is I wouldn’t replace that bottle but the other two I would in a peated-heartbeat.

Whisky In The 6 Then I guess I have some exploring to do. The journey continues. How would you compare this to the Lagavulin 8 yr old? It’s basically twice the price here in NS.

Haven’t tried the Laga 8 yet but I like most Octomores better than Laga 12 if I’m honest.

I think I need to go to a real whisky bar and get a pour of some Octomore and see if I like it or not. I do really enjoy Port Charlot, Caol Ila, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Who knows , maybe Octomore is something I would enjoy.

This finally hit my local market and I snagged a bottle for $149.99 ISD. It gets added to my Octomore collection with my 6.3 and 7.1. IMHO, this is the worst of the three. Still good, but I bought backups of the 6.3 and 7.1, but will not backup the 8.1. Just a little thin with more alcohol burn than depth of flavors.

  • @Gachain
    @Gachain 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rob:
I have only had the 7.1 but I agree, OCTOMORE is a well crafted whisky. It is interesting that the 8.1 has that Barbecue note like PORT CHARLOTTE, Islay Barley. I need to research where they sourced the Peat.
    Thanks for another interesting review.

      Hey Rob:
Checked the Bruichladdich website and indeed they use barley from mainland Scotland in the OCTOMORE 8.1. Where they sourced the Peat is not stated; quite possibly it was sourced at Caithness on the northeast tip of Scotland, the same place they source their Peat for the current bottling of PORT CHARLOTTE, Islay Barley, which also has a Barbecue note.
I e-mailed the distillery to get more information. They were forthcoming with my inquiry on PORT CHARLOTTE so I am interested to find out more about OCTOMORE 8.1. I cook and I am also in a creative field so learning about the Craft of whisky making enhances my enjoyment of whisky.
BTW Cool Old School LEAFS Sweater.

      Hey Rob:
Concerning the Peat and Barbecue note in OCTOMORE 8.1. I got a response from the woman I have been corresponding with, below is the info.
IMO, I feel it is the Peat and where it is sourced. It is in line with the Terrior concept; since peat is organic material and different plants and animals live on the Northeast tip Scotland as opposed the the Islands however Slightly. Of course slow distillation encourages more contact with Copper imparting more notes in the New Make as you know as well.
All of our barley is malted by Bairds in Inverness using Caithness peat - all Bruichladdich/Port Charlotte and Octomore malt. So it is very possible that the barbecue note comes from the peat….or is it the exceptionally talk stills we have that clarify the spirit, or is it the speed of distillation??? Tis a minefield of variables, which is what makes it so fascinating.
      Cheers, Lynne
