I spoke Chinese at Vietnam's border with China and this happened 🇻🇳🇨🇳

  • 🇻🇳🇨🇳 Welcome to Lao Cai, a small border city in northwest Vietnam. Borders are always strange regions in a country. An "imaginary" line separates peoples of two cultures, who speak different languages, and have different personalities, interests, and lives. Border cities, however, are even stranger. They often have mixing of peoples from both sides of this line. And so here in Lao Cai, we went in search of Chinese food, to enjoy a different cuisine, and also to speak Chinese. But we found something I was not quite expecting. Hope you enjoy this confusing video.

As a Native Vietnamese, I can confirm Chris's Vietnamese is near-Native (closer to the native on the spectrum).
To show an Asian criticizes everything, there are some critics:
      1. His word of choice is still not very natural, this is probably an English-native thing because Vietnamese usually use really specific words that usually got cut out on translation.
      2. His pronunciation and grammar are still a little bit off sometimes for being a native. His stressing sometimes applies the stressing from English. Probably from the IPA but still.
      9.8/10 for Chris's Vietnamese (10/10 is native).

His thumbnail is him and his fake 'Grab driver' sneering down at a little 'baby man' local who is WHATT ME BABY CONFWUSED as he looks up at the great ginger godman who can speak in his language! It's nearly the worst 'ambassadorring' you could hope for. I was in Ireland and a lot of Vietnamese spoke English, some very well and some almost perfectly if they were setting it up for a video made to show how well they speak English. So far as I know, none are posting videos where Goof Irish Natives are Baby-Men utterly WHATTT?!?! and cannot BELIEVE this Vietnamese guy spoke in fluent English with them.

There is something wrong with you if you'd be super happy to pull a 'prank' and humiliated some little man by shocking him with your superiority.
      You shouldn't take it.
Sometimes I'm surprised when someone speaks my language. But by 'surprised' I don't become a flabbergasted caveman "HUH WHAT HIS MAGIC GODLIKE POWER HERDERRR!?" and if the person took my surprise by hovering over me and sneering "phht...look at this fool in awe of me hehehh" then I'd be very disappointed.

21:55 those clear chewy noodles are actually known as either 冬粉(dong1 fen3) or 粉絲 (fen3 si1) in Chinese, and are made from mung bean or sweet potato starch! The 米線 (mi3 xian4) you are thinking of is a different noodle entirely (though shaped the same) that is white in color and made from nonsticky rice, hence the name. Former type is usually more of a north/costal style noodle & sold dried at supermarkets, while the latter is south/central China thing and sold fresh.
So you and max were both half right (you on mixian and max on "glass noodles") just mixed the two together hahaha! 😆
(Also just a heads up, the Chinese I typed is in traditional characters since that is what I normally use and it's a hassle to change settings, so will probably look different to what you are used to😅)

It's not really a talent. It just takes hours and hours of time. If you think this is amazing, drop into most any part of the USA and you can find millions of people who speak English, speak Spanish and (example) a Philipino dialect. This would be normal. you'd find it everywhere. You'd find many (most?) people in his very videos speak at least 2 different languages fluently. But to the point, its not a special talent so much as it's just being willing to spend endless hours practicing. Then again, we could say having the patience, nothing else better to do and maybe some driving need for the ease and security it will bring is a kind of study talent I suppose.

That was NEAT! You were really intrigued by the proprietor who spoke many languages and had a fusion restuarant. I liked it a lot. And Max knew what "glass noodles" were which was cool. I always thought they were made by diakon? A vegetable, and those are rubbery and stretchy. They really have no flavor except for the sauce that is put on them in cooking. My dad has a hang over story about those noodles and about rum and coca-cola, but this isn't my channel. Back to the restaurant. It's a fusion restaurant. I like how you get to chose your ingredients and it's it's cooked in a hot pot with noodles. I could hear the ingredients being cooked when you pulled up front. I like this place. They were very interested after a while when you were friendly and asked questions and "ribbed" them a little. Good advertisement for them. A little hard to find, but a nice place. ❤❤❤🌸🌹👍

I’m Singaporean, so when I heard the owner speak in English I was wondering why he had a very Singaporean accent, especially since he’s Indonesian. Like you, I thought he was from Jakarta or the like. And then when he said that he’s from Batam it made perfect sense LOL

Not a good idea to consume food that have not been properly prepared, ie: unrefrigerated, served w/ barehands, unwashed utensils/plates .... Once your GI system is infected w/ parasites, they become permanent residents. Very exciting to speak the native tongue and to explore the different dishes in a foreign land, and to make money on top, but you are putting your body at great risks for tropical parasite infections. Very unwise.
