Compilation of traditional Irish music recorded in Belfast mainly in the 1970s and 1980s by the now defunct "Outlet" label, run by the late Billy Burnie, I believe, who deserves a lot of credit for making these recordings at a time when it was a very difficult commercial proposition to do so.

@@brianmccarthy5557 Hi Brian - you're welcome, always happy to spread information. You - and anyone else with an interest in Irish traditional music - might be interested to know that many of the "Outlet" catalogue recordings made by several of the musicians in the list above are available for download very cheaply on "iTunes".

Beautiful shiny gems. However the bulk (75-90%) of these tunes were once part of an improvised Gaelic oral tradition. These old lyrical songs were then simplified during persecution and the break up of musical orders, into tunes which could be written down and more simply understood for dances. Going even further as the music was taken out of the context of language once valid techniques and sections to melodies are relegated to become mere ornament tricks to layer on to simplified written tunes. Sheet music etc. even reels and jigs are all after affects of the music being assimilated, diluted and simplified away from its original form. Long story short the character, definition and texture of these tunes is drastically dependent on the musicians melodic understanding of Gaelic music and language. I feel this music is especially sensitive to sounding not nearly as good if the rhythms and tempos, key notes and pauses are inaccurate or sped up, this is mainly because its been changed from its original form so much already. If a few of these tunes were changed any more they would be just a repetitive jumble of notes. The true character of Irish tunes is usually more evident in airs because they haven't been as altered as much as in dance tunes have and are hardly written down to be sung. This is lyrical swinging music with great sensitivity to subtle breaths of rhythm and melody the way tunes are played all timed, divided and monotone nowadays literally invalidates this chief quality. Like its cousin Sean nos singing tunes should mean "A good performance classically involves substantial ornament and rhythmic variations from verse to verse."
