As a gay man who was politically active in the early 80s I know that politics is voting for the person that can at least be moved in the direction you hope to see one day. That pragmatic approach meant that I often voted for people who just barely tolerated me. That slow, stead pressure worked but it took decades to go from someone who could be charged with a felony for having sex in some states, to someone who is married today. No politician gives you everything you want. Voting is not a zero sum game. Everytime that someone casts a protest vote ALL that happens is the side closest to them loses.

Polls have a systematic problem, being unable to predict turnout by group, while relying on group weighting. Truly random polls should make a comeback. Not sure they will, but they should. Not because they are accurate, but because they are useful. These manually adjusted polls where pollsters tweak it to be safe regardless of outcome are worthless.

My Dad died from COVID when Donald Trump weaponized his pandemic 'response' by sending 170 broken ventilators to California, March 29, 2020, the frontline of the outbreak where he lost the vote. Now we find out May 21, 2020 Trump sent 200 working ventilators as well as COVID test kits to Putin. This is who he is. @@fr33usa73 #PutinsPuppet
"It is a truism that many who join a rising revolutionary movement are attracted by the prospect of sudden and spectacular change in their conditions of life.
With a fading of the individual’s creative powers there appears a pronounced inclination toward joining a mass movement. Here the connection between the escape from an ineffectual self and a responsiveness to mass movements is very clear. The slipping author, artist, scientist - slipping because of a drying-up of the creative flow within - drifts sooner or later into the camps of ardent patriots, race mongers, uplift promoters and champions of holy causes.
The desire to escape or camouflage their unsatisfactory selves develops in the frustrated a facility for pretending-for making a show-and also a readiness to identify themselves wholly with an imposing mass spectacle.
All active mass movements strive, therefore, to interpose a fact-proof screen between the faithful and the realities of the world. A peculiar side of credulity is that it is often joined with a proneness to imposture. The association of believing and lying is not characteristic solely of children. They inability or unwillingness to see things as they are promotes both gullibility and charlatanism. Failure in the management of practical affairs seems to be a qualification for success in the management of public affairs.
The revulsion from an unwanted self, and the impulse to forget it, mask it, slough it off and lose it, produce both a readiness to sacrifice the self and a willingness to dissolve it by losing one's individual distinctness in a compact collective whole.
Propaganda ... serves more to justify ourselves than to convince others; and the more reason we have to feel guilty, the more fervent our propaganda. When the weak want to give an impression of strength they hint menacingly at their capacity for evil. It is by its promise of a sense of power that evil often attracts the weak.
The weakness of a soul is proportionate to the number of truths that must be kept from it. It is a talent of the weak to persuade themselves that they suffer for something when they suffer from something; that they are showing the way when they are running away; that they see the light when they feel the heat; that they are chosen when they are shunned.
Totalitarianism spells simplification: an enormous reduction in the variety of aims, motives, interests, human types, and, above all, in the categories and units of power.
Unless a man has the talents to make something of himself, freedom is an irksome burden. Of what avail is freedom to choose if the self be ineffectual? We join a mass movement to escape individual responsibility, or, in the words of the ardent young Nazi, ‘to be free from freedom.’ It was not sheer hypocrisy when the rank-and-file Nazis declared themselves not guilty of all the enormities they had committed. They considered themselves cheated and maligned when made to shoulder responsibility for obeying orders. Had they not joined the Nazi movement in order to be free from responsibility
Passionate hatreds can give meaning and purpose to an empty life. These people haunted by the purposelessness of their lives try to find a new content not only by dedicating themselves to a holy cause but also by nursing a fanatical grievance. Whence come these unreasonable hatreds, and why their unifying effect? They are an expression of a desperate effort to suppress an awareness of our inadequacy, worthlessness, guilt and other shortcomings of the self.
Nationalist pride, like other variants of pride, can be a substitute for self-respect. Collective unity is not the result of the brotherly love of the faithful for each other. The loyalty of the true believer is to the whole the church, party, nation and not to his fellow true believer. True loyalty between individuals is possible only in a loose and relatively free society
All mass movements generate in their adherents a readiness to die and a proclivity for united action; all of them, irrespective of the doctrine they preach and the program they project, breed fanaticism, enthusiasm, fervent hope, hatred and intolerance; all of them are capable of releasing a powerful flow of activity in certain departments of life; all of them demand blind faith and singlehearted allegiance.
Hitler, who sensed the undercurrent of admiration in hatred, drew a remarkable conclusion. It is of the utmost importance, he said, that the National Socialist should seek and deserve the violent hatred of his enemies. Such hatred would be proof of the superiority of the National Socialist faith. “The best yardstick for the value of his [the National Socialist’s] attitude, for the sincerity of his conviction, and the force of his will is the hostility he receives from the … enemy.
Hitler, who had a clear vision of the whole course of a movement even while he was nursing his infant National Socialism, warned that a movement retains its vigor only so long as it can offer nothing in the present-only “honor and fame in the eyes of posterity.
A just society must strive with all its might to right wrongs even if righting wrongs is a highly perilous undertaking. But if it is to survive, a just society must be strong and resolute enough to deal swiftly and relentlessly with those who would mistake its good will for weakness."

Friend, I'm Egyptian and I'm a nervous wreck on behalf of my fellow American brethren. I cannot fathom a world where Trump wins again. Worse still, I cannot fathom the amount of damage, moral decay, and absolute vengeance he will wreak on your people and future generations. In one singular presidential period he managed to completely poison your politics probably for the next 100 years. He destroyed your Supreme Court and filled it with corrupt and biased shills. He robbed all American women of their right to abortion. And he split the country so divisively that half of the country is convinced that the other half is trying to kill them and are therefore debating whether they should kill them first.
He did all of this naturally, comfortably and instinctively. And he didn't even have a plan the first time. But he's been building grudges, anger and a desire for vengeance and nursing it for the past 4 years. If he gets in again, he will ensure that there's nothing to salvage after he's gone. He's going to hand the entire country to extremist Christians, to white nationalists, to Nazis, to Putin, and North Korea.
Honestly, I'm scared for all of you, and I pray that you can triumph through voting and declare as a single nation that you will not stand for a criminal, felon, rapist, authoritarian, violent psychopath as your elected leader.

He refused a covid vaccine. He got very sick, and it wasnt until he was on his deathbed that he realized he had made a mistake. He died within 2 weeks of getting sick.
When we cleaned out his house afterwards, despite him being on unemployment, we found at least a thousand dollars of guns he never used, with all sorts of Trump and NRA thank you letters throughout the place. When we told his friends what happened (who were friends of ours as well), and suggested they get the vaccine. They threatened us with violence and said the most vile things.
Donald Trump and the republican party used my uncle as a mark. Their misinformation killed him, drained his wallet, and brainwashed his friends. He was one of his most loyal followers, and they did the most terrible things imaginable to him. And I can only imagine how many people can share the same story.

Honestly, I'm sad John Oliver couldn't run for president. If there was ever a case to say those born outside the US should be allowed to run, this would be it. I started watching John when I was fairly conservative. Over time, not because of John, but because of many circumstances, I've slowly changed and I could say that I'm a solid moderate. But from day one, I have respected him. I haven't always agreed, but he has very valid points and cites sources; something I have more respect for than someone who agrees with me but doesn't have any footing on why they have their view. I wish all the time I could have my parents watch Last Week Tonight to get them to see the logical standpoints of why they are misguided, or to at least have an understanding of the other side. Alas, they would be too offended by John's humor to even focus on the core content. However, even a result of that, it's refreshing to be able to watch someone almost every week that can produce such thorough and informative content and assure me that I'm not alone in my beliefs.

I am utterly terrified! Here in Germany a tv show host would never publicly express their political opinion, let alone suggest what party to vote for. The fact that you did made me realize even more how dire the situation really is, both for you guys in the US, but also for us in the rest of the world. I feel like this is a vote of the severity of the one in Germany in 1933, that could lead to a lot of suffering in the aftermath, except we now have the gift of hindsight and some people still choose to vote for the one that wants to be a dictator "on the first day". I don`t think I´ve ever been this anxious about an election, not even for my own country. My university will do a live broadcast in the audimax and I am nervous already. Not that I´d ever thought I would write this, but PLEASE, for the love of god, vote for Kamala Harris!!

As an American I've always found it fascinating how many people from other countries take an interest in our election. And I completely understand why. Who gets voted into office in our country has real world implications for many outside our borders. But Americans take very little interest in other countries politics. If there was a presidential or prime minister or whatever you have in Germany election going on, you would be lucky if one in a hundred thousand Americans even knew the election was taking place let alone who is running for office. Americans have a well deserved reputation for ignorance for a reason. That's how we found ourselves in this mess with Trump to begin with. Even though I never have or would vote for Trump, I still feel like I should apologize to the rest of the world for this disgrace of a human being being put on the world stage.

I’m over in the UK, and we’re just quietly sweating as the U.S. election unfolds-like the world’s most nerve-wracking reality show where we don’t get to vote, but we definitely have to live with the winner. It’s almost funny, in a dark way, that this one election has all of us on edge, like ‘Please, America, let’s not hit the ‘villain arc’ button on democracy.’ I almost wish the rest of the world got a symbolic vote, even if it’s just a desperate ‘SOS’ on the ballot. If I could, I’d join you in voting for Kamala Harris and praying for a plot twist that doesn’t end with us all in the apocalypse spinoff."
