I really love seeing people's faces the first time they hear Child in Time. Never disappoints 😁
This was being recorded and more then likely the audience was told to not react until the end. It's a anti-war song in particular about the Vietnam war in which my husband was a part of. The cadence, or drum roll signifies troops marching and the ensuing mash up of the chaos was representing what it may be like under fire. My husband served for four years and when he got out in 1973, Deep Purple was one of the first bands he saw live in our hometown of Chicago. That was almost 50 years ago and about 7 years ago we saw them together outside of Houston, Texas and they were still great!
Nonsense, this song has NOTHING to do with Vietnam, someone somewhere just decided that it is & others have followed like sheep.

The audience weren't told not to react, the majority of the audience weren't even Deep Purple fans, it wasn't advertised so many were family and friends of Granada TV employees who recorded the show in Manchester.

Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath were called the Unholy Trinity of Heavy Metal. The audience here were instructed not to move. They director didn't want anything to distract from the performance.

This kind of music was fairly polarizing at the time as well so they may not have had the the "right" audience that evening. I can't see a lot of period metal heads in that crowd.

It was something completely new back then, most of the audience has probably never heard a (Hard)Rock Band before and had a hard time "understanding" it, and even more to "know what to do to it". This can be seen on most of the broadcasted videos from those days (and even on live concert clips). If it's a "first time hearing" today we are definitively "used" to metal and hardrock, so emotionally it's a different level. And just to remember that "back then" (Hard)Rock was widely considered "noise only" :)
@@alexiserni1152 Indeed. This was "Top of the Pops" or something similar to that in 1970? Look at what else was on the charts in 1970. It wasn't this and this isn't what any of the people in audience were there to see.
By that I mean that they did do well in the charts, but no the best and certainly not mainstream yet.

The thing that makes this performance so special , is how Ian Gillen hits those A-5 register notes , and then makes a transition - a seemless transition to deep lower registers so flawlessly.

Ian Gillan was chosen to be the voice of Jesus Christ in Jesus Christ superstar. His voice is sensational. JC Superstar was released also in 1970 on the brown album. He won my heart and soul then with his voice. The audience was specially formed for the recording. They were not allowed to respond until the end as a condition to being there for this amazing video.
Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull are my big five bands of that period from England and The Allman Brothers from America 🎉❤

The audience WAS asked to not be distracting from the performance. It was TV in Britain in the Seventies they didn't want anybody screaming and ruining the sound, the way young girls did The Beatles only a few years earlier.

This is one of the few hard rock groups I enjoyed in the 60's-70's. "Smoke On The Water" is their most popular song. Everyone has heard that famous riff. Some of my favorites are their covers of Joe South's "Hush" & Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman". Also like "Highway Star", "Woman From Tokyo", "Lazy", "Fireball", "Speed King", "Space Truckin'" etc.
Actually guitarist Ritchie Blackmore hated Smoke on the Water at the beginning because it is too simple for them as great musicians.
Ritchie Blackmore is one of the best guitarists in rock history. he was also part of Rainbow, another wonderful band with vocals by Ronnie James Dio. A song suggestion Stargazer - Rainbow.😊

Deep Purple came before Black Sabbath and was one of the biggest Influences on heavy metal of the 70s and 80s. Smoke on the Water and Highway Star are great too. Smoke on the Water has the most iconic riff in rock music and one of the first riffs people learn on guitar.
Deep purple is one of the first bands I got into way back in the early 70's. They were and still are iconic. I got to see them live and it was one of the best concerts I have ever seen. This song was a protest song about the Vietnam War. I feel lucky to have grown up in the 60's and 70's because I got to experience the best music ever recorded :). Thanks for this!

Deep Purple are the band that got me into Heavy Metal . They were my inspiration during my teens . They’re still touring .
Deep Purple are in my top 5 bands of all time. I got to see them live in 1984 and again in 2004. They have so many great songs including HIghway Star, Burn, Speed King, Perfect Strangers and Hush.
I saw them in '84 also. In Michigan.
The studio audience was instructed to be quiet during the recording for a tv special. This was pretty standard for live studio recordings in England at the time. Also, I'm not sure this audience had any idea what was about to hit them, as the 1970 album this song came from had recently been released and was a complete departure for Deep Purple, who had replaced the singer and bass player shortly before the release of Deep Purple - In Rock. This album had a much HARDER sound than their previous albums, and may be the very first instance (or among the very first) of what came to be known as HARD ROCK. Stunning performance!

Loved "Hush" so much in 19686, then Gillan and Blackmore came in - totally different.
@@StanEngland Small correction: Gillan and Glover came in 1969/1970. Blackmore was there from the beginning. He formed the band and played on Hush.
The reason that the crowd was not animated was as you said the sound issue .. any noise from the audience would be picked up so they are strictly told not to make noise .. Inside they were rocking 😀👍.. Deep Purple were one of the most influential rock bands of the 70’s .. on same level as Led Zeppelin… Try Smoke on the water .. had one of the most famous guitar riffs in history.. you’ll definitely know it .. 😀☘️

This is the classic Deep Purple line up from the 1970s. They got together again in the 1990s and you might enjoy them playing this song again on the 'hell or high water' tour. It's awesome, especially Richie Blackmore's guitar solo.
Smoke on the Water is their most famous song. Yoy must hear that. So many kids played it in guitar stores, driving the workers crazy, that they often put signs up forbidding it.
Every single person who reacts to this performance comments on the crowd...this was a television audience, and they were asked to remain quiet during the song for the sake of the broadcast.
Deep Purple was/is an incredible band that spanned many decades and several lineup changes. This was the "Mark 2" lineup, featuring singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover, together with drummer Ian Paice, keyboardist Jon Lord and the immortal Ritchie Blackmore on guitars (Blackmore would later go on to form the band Rainbow with singer Ronnie James Dio).
Another legendary performance by this band is the CalJam performance of the song "Burn"...this is by the "Mark 3" version of the band, with singer David Coverdale and bassist/vocalist Gleen Hughes.

This is one of the best performances I have ever watched. I had the same face as u when he was going higher with his voice shocked and amazed. Part of this song is in one of my favorite movies which is Twister. I definitely recommend Smoke on the Water and Highway Star for future reactions. Great reaction Biss!!!
Yes! It confused the hell out of me for a minute, though, because the little TV in the "Barn Burner" was actually showing a Rainbow video while This song was playing. 🤣

This performace inspired singers like Rob Halford of Judas Priest & Bruce Dickerson of Iron Maiden... That's saying something about the power of this song and band!
Highway star, Smoke on the Water, Lazy, Woman from tokyo, Burn, Hush, Fireball, Mistreated, Black Night, Speed King, Stormbringer, Soldier of fortune and the list goes on and on.
DP is on the pantheon of heavy music pioneers alongside with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. These three were the segway from Rock to Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Never knew why DP did not gain the popularity of the other two, dispite that theirs is the most recognisable riff in the histroy of heavy music (smoke on the water).
This performance was a live studio recording and the crowd was told not to move an eyelid so that there would be no unwanted noise captured from the mics. I guess they did exactly as they were told!
The guitarist (Richi Blackmore) along with R.J.Dio formed Rainbow in 1975.
Other bands from the same era with similar vibe: Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep, Camel, Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy and of course Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

This is one of the greatest anti-war songs ever written. I had the great privilege to attend their concert in Cape Town in 1998, There was a lot of smoke on the stage and in the arena that day.😆

My Dad brought me up with Deep Purple, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and so much more and honestly it is the best music education a child can have and hope that it continues for future generations. Great reaction, and I'm glad you were led to DP.
My recommendation would be Marc Bolan & T-Rex, an absolute genius if I do say so myself, which goes under the radar for how influential they were, especially Bolan.

Now you really entered my world of music. Deep Purple is my favorite band, saw them multiple times, in Helsinki couple of times, Jyväskylä, Joensuu, Tuuri & Kuopio at least. And Child in time could be the very favorite of very many incredicle songs the band has written in their 55 year career

A beautiful song. My uncle (And my dad and me ) was a huge fan of Deep Purple and this song was played as an instrumental at his funeral on the church organ. He even did the solo! It was the most epic performance of the song I have ever heard and it's such a shame he wasn't there to hear it cause he would have loved it the most!

And here's some non-gatekeeping for you :D You should absolutely watch "Stargazer" by Rainbow (with the amazing Ronnie James Dio on vocals and Richie Blackmore on guitar--that same guy from Deep Purple). You'll be blown away.

Quick personal anecdote: The studio version of "Burn" by Purple, 1974, first album post-Ian Gillan for them was THE song, being played occasionally on the radio, that spurred me on to going to a record store to buy my first album. The live versions of it are cool but the *studio* version is amazing..so clear, so good.

This guitarist left Deep Purple to form Rainbow in 1975. Ronnie James Dio was the singer. Their classic is "Stargazer". Many reactions to it on youtube, would be curious to see what you think of it...

I'm surprised u were never actively suggested listening to Deep Purple. They are right next to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath as the "Unholy Trio" of British rock that created the foundations of the genre of hard rock & heavy metal music 🤘🤘😈
Unlike most British bands that were usually formed by friends getting together, Deep Purple came together in 1968 after a band of professional musicians in London were recruited for the band Roundabout... The line-up solidified in 1968 and changed their name to Deep Purple after an old song which was a favorite of the grandmother of Ritchie Blackmore (guitar)... Jon Lord (organ) was a classically trained pianist... Ian Paice (drums), Nick Simper (bass) and Rod Evans (vocals) was the original band and recorded 3 albums of pop rock material and became successful in the US w/ early cover hits like 'Hush'... 'Kentucky woman'... 'Lalena'...
In 1969, the band heard music changing and wanted a change too... Ian Gillan (vocals) and Roger Glover (bass) replaced Evans and Simper. This was the iconic "Mark II" line-up of the band... Deep Purple heard the new 'heavy rock' sound of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix Experience, and wanted to go down that route musically, despite a 4th 'Concerto' album in 1969 which the band recorded w/ a symphony orchestra.
In 1970, Deep Purple released the single 'Black Night' and the album 'In rock' after... they wanted to reintroduce themselves as a 'heavy rock' band and got a huge fanfare in Europe and the UK... This TV performance was filmed live in Sweden, and the audience in 1970 had never heard anything this intense and visceral from a rock band... plus, they were instructed not to 'go wild' (Deep Purple shows in the 70's were very destructive as audiences actually caused damages to the venues).
The band toured and released the albums - 'Fireball' (1971) and 'Machine head' (1972)... but it was the live album 'Made in Japan' (also 1972) that broke Deep Purple to massive worldwide popularity by 1973 and the album 'Who do we think we are'. However, there were clashes between Blackmore and Gillan, and Ian Gillan announced that he was leaving Deep Purple in 1973... Ritchie Blackmore agreed to stay if Roger Glover (bass) was fired (Glover quit when he found out). Blackmore's temperament always made the band a tense and unpredictable situation...
David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass + vocals) joined Deep Purple in 1974 (Mark III line-up) and recorded the 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer' albums, becoming even more successful... But a disgruntled Ritchie Blackmore eventually quit the band in 1975... He went on to form the band Rainbow w/ singer Ronnie James Dio... Deep Purple recorded 'Come taste the band' (1975) w/ Tommy Bolin (guitar) joining the band (Mark IV line-up) but few wanted a Deep Purple record without Ritchie Blackmore... After a series of mishaps, Deep Purple broke up in 1976... David Coverdale went on to find success w/ his band Whitesnake... Tommy Bolin passed away from an OD soon after (R.I.P.)
After years of making music in separate bands, the 'Mark II' line-up finally reunited in 1984 for the album 'Perfect strangers'... Gillan, Blackmore, Lord, Paice and Glover were back on tour as well... but tensions rose again making the album 'House of blue light' (1987)... Gillan was fired and replaced by ex-Rainbow vocalist Joe Lynn Turner in 1990 for 1 album - 'Slaves and masters'... For Deep Purple's 25th anniversary in 1993, the band decided to re-hire Ian Gillan (vocals)... but Ritchie Blackmore was fed up and quit Deep Purple in late 1993.
In 1994, Deep Purple hired American guitarist Steve Morse and carried on w/ 2 more albums - 'Purpendicular' (1996) and 'Abandon' (1998) and were seemed happier, despite the lack of commercial success... Jon Lord (organ/ keyboards) left the band amicably in 2002 to work on his classical music projects... Sadly, Jon Lord passed away from cancer in 2012 (R.I.P.) Don Airey (organ/ keyboards) joined Deep Purple in 2003 and carried on w/ the band for several more albums.
In 2002, guitarist Steve Morse left Deep Purple amicably and was replaced by touring guitarist Simon McBride... the band is on tour for what may be the last dates of their career.

Yup, it was a secret, welcome to the world of Deep Purple. About the audience, other people have already commented on other channels, it was a requirement of the time to maintain total silence. Besides, most of the audience didn't even know who those guys were who made that weird music hahaha.

Songs by Deep Purple one is expected to know are listed in other comments. I strongly recommend "Burn" (with different vocalist(s) and basist, by no means less excellent), the whole album of "Perfect Strangers", and from SLAVES AND MASTERS (with yet another singer, this time slightly inferior to the other two, but music is good) "Fire in the basement" "Love conquers all" "Breakfast in bed" and "King of dreams" and from BATTLE RAGES ON (with Ian Gillan, singer in this video) - the titular track, as well as "Twist in the Tale", "Ramshackle Man" and "Time to Kill". Their latest album "WHOOSH" is quite interesting as well. OH! And "Stormbringer" and "Soldier of Fortune" from STORMBRINGER (with David Coverdale as lead singer, the same as in "BURN"). BTW - to me "BURN" is one of the best rock songs of all time with amazing solos on organ and guitar, but it's cover by "hair band" (unjustly underrated) MR.BIG is absolutely amazing, especially the solos.

The audience is like that because Deep Purple is one of the 3 British pioneers of Heavy Metal & Hard Rock, and that audience is in 1970 and never heard such a sound so far, and they don't know how to react on it. Up to today, every music you listened and which have some elements on those music genres, they all inspired by Deep Purple at some measure...

Welcome to the greatest rock band of all time playing possibly the greatest rock track..this was a very early performance - to hear it at it’s finest, then listen the version on the album Made in Japan - which even now, 50 years since it was recorded, is still regarded as the finest live album produced.. no band comes close to how good these guys were

Deep Purple is been one of my fav bands nearly 50-years. One good suggestion for a Deep Purple reaction could be Hard Lovin' Man.
The audience was asked to not make any noise during the performance since it was being recorded. Also Deep Purple's first singer was Rod Evans. But after guitarist Ritchie Blackmore heard Led Zeppelin's furst album he wanted a singer like that so they canned Evans and got Ian Gillan.
I can hardly believe you never heard this one before. Here in The Netherlands it ranks in the top5 in the top100 of all time almost every single year. (Together with Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rapsody, Hotel California, etc.)
