This song was performed by Ronnie Dyson, and for those too young to remember (or weren't even born yet), he was a successful R&B recording artist of the 70's, with hits like "Why Can't I Touch You?" "One Man Band" and "I Just Don't Want To Be Lonely." But sadly, he experienced health issues by the end of the 1970's, which kept him inactive for much of the 80's. The recording of this song was probably one of his last projects, and even though his singing on this recording is quite good, when you compare this to the songs he recorded in the 70's, you can tell that his voice was weakening due to his failing health. He tragically died in 1990 from heart failure at the tender age of 40. RIP Ronnie.
Thank you spike Lee for enhancing my jazz palette. It’s because of your movies I went to Grambling State University 1988 I felt like I was in School Daze and She’s Gotta have it movies.
[Lyrics] There’s a girl that I one knew who often had a friend or two. She gave him time, love wit and rhyme sublime. They would come from far away and often gather there all day to show their love and see which one would stay But to her it mattered not for loyalty not her lot Her answer was for not for them to know. There she goes On her merry way though she’s only queen for a day. Boy and girl often take this whirl So you’d better mind what you say. My advice to you,my friend Is try to find what it’s about. And then you take into account your role. Do no take some sugar in your mouth that may be sweet to you,but bitter in your stomach later on. What is good for you may not be good for me,so a different stroke for different folk could be a real good rule. There she goes On her merry way though she’s only queen for a day. Boy and girl often take this whirl So you’d better mind what you say. ... [INSTRUMENTAL] Now it’s time to bid a adieu it’s been a pleasure knowing you I’ll see you when it’s time to meet again.
I love this song! I have a best friend who had male friends that would come over and sit. They would all try to see which one would leave first. I would just sit back and laugh while looking at the whole seen. She's married now and a faithful wife.
Excellent soundtrack that is nearly impossible to find on any format. I wish that a copy of the soundtrack was included with the dvd movie. I was surprised to find it on TH-cam. Thanks for posting!
Wow, no comments on this gem of a song. When I saw the movie, the voice sounded familiar. Then looking at the credits, I saw it was Ronnie. GREAT song...written well and wonderfully sung.
I m in love with Bill Lee s music , particulary this beautiful waltz that i played twenty years ago when i started to played piano , all the tracks of this album are great also !!! of course i have the original LP !
@MusicLova84,..I still own and love this movie, although Spike has said he can’t watch it anymore as he can only see the flaws…I’m quite sure he doesn’t have that same feeling about his Fathers superb Jazz soundtrack. Thanks for taking the time.
In 1986, I believe Spike did the best he could with the resources he had. And I understand what he meant about "the flaws". I feel the rawness adds to the authenticity. Like I said, it loved the film. It was his first mainstream project. We live, we learn.
I know Spike, like most of us, is probably his own toughest critic, but I love She's Gotta Have It (1986) just the way it is. A big part of the charm of that movie is its rawness. I loved it then and love it now! And Bill Lee... sublime! No other versions of this song (and I own a couple) can top the original. Thanks again for uploading this.
First time i listen and recorded in my tape recorder this song was late 80's, a little after i finished school. It was my favorite but I did not know the tittle and i did know the singer. I was trying unluckily to find the performer for many years until yesterday (30 years later!!) listening to a cover of this song (driving to the office). It made my day! Shazam helped me out to find the singer (JoseJames) and the tittle, then the original performance by Ronnie Dyson. What an excellent piece of music!!! Superb!!
I know that father and son had their issues, but here Bill Lee composed the best film score, worldwide, of the 1980s, and after seeing this film I wished for much much more from him. I know he does a lot of other music work, but DAMN, if you take in the full SGHI, the score just leaves you breathless with (apologies) "awesome vibes": it is so confident and relaxed, both modern and timeless. IMHO (okay???), This holds a place along with Shoot the Piano Player, The Magnificent Seven, I Want to Live, Breathless, The Battle of Algiers, Enter the Dragon, Fargo, Raise the Red Lantern, Love in a Puff, Never Let me Go, Never on Sunday, Zorba the Greek,The Seven Samurai, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, Walk on the Wild Side, Shaft, The Pink Panther, The Third Man, Sorceror, and La noire de...as the loveliest original post-war film scores that are just as addictively listenable without the movies. Sorry about John Williams; sorry about The Godfather, Lawrence of Arabia, Rocky, and Dr. Zhivago: they sound bombastic and silly outside of their films. Ah....Fort Greene in summer, in 1986. The opening credits are the best.
This Song I didn't remember I guess I wasn't paying attention to it when I was 15 now that I'm older I appreciate the way Mr Spike captured that moment in time on film I can't stop rewinding that whole scene the clothes, the park , graffiti everywhere thankful for this director
Thanks for the post :D I saw the movie yesterday for the second time in 20 years and I can't express how much I dig Spike's movies & soundtracks(especially from '86 to '96) it's awesome to see his sister Joie playing the double bass and it's always great to see his father Bill(on piano and bass,at the end)
You are absolutely right,I must see Four Little Girls...hopefully,Spike's here to remind us all what happened a few decades ago :( Thanks to you for taking time to post this and answering me.
@Fjord76,It was a great movie and I can't recommend the Soundtrack highly enough, although I'd stretch "86 to"97 to include the very important Four Little Girls. Thanks for taking the time!
Neo,Thanks for the comment,I also had to check the Movie credits to find out who the vocalist was on this fine composition. Sadly, this song doesn't get the airplay it deserves.
