Universal ROM on Quadra 700

Short video about the Universal ROM 4 & 8 MB versions with a boot image. Universal ROM is the new version of ROM simm that works in a Mac II family and Quadra/Performa type machines. This image for the Q700 also works on the 950/900.

It’s all about having fun. The intention was to have it as easy as possible. A prototype had a switch on it but that dangerous.

Maybe. If it logic board has a simm socket or the location to add one, there is a good possibility a rom can be modified. We sell the roms with a simm socket a person can add or send the board to me or a person who can add a simm socket. I will also need to ask Joakim to work on that rom and have a tester person. He nor I have a 605 machine.

Dave, the 605 can use the same ROM as 610/475/575 so you can go to this page and get the rom image or have a ROM shipped with the image on it. github.com/CayMac-Team/UniversalROMImages go to the 475/575/610 folder.

Stupid question, but what do these ROMs do over the standard ROM? I have a Q700, so I’m interested!

People use hacked roms to bypass a long memory post check as the hacked rom bypasses the memory post check. The other benefit is having a boot image on the ROM that can be used to boot the machine. This is customizable (within the size limitation) and written back to the ROM if you have ROM SIMM programmer. More things coming in the future. You know about the ROMinator from Big Mess of Wires? That rom hack is for the 512K rom image machines but now with the universal rom, the 1MB rom image machines like the Quadras and others are also getting the same abilities.

I wish I could use my own compressed disk image with the Quadra 700. All attempts I've made have failed with the ROM Simm programmer software to combine for me.

Would it be possible to modify the rom to allow the computer to boot with a 68060 processor?

That is beyond the ROM ability. This is more a hardware limitation.
