They only had a handful of radio hits but they never recorded a bad song. They’re still active and actually just dropped a new single called “Astronaut”. It’s excellent.
Actually that is not true they had a huge amount of hits. Mad world, Change, Shout, everybody wants to rule the world, Head over Heals, Woman in Chains, sowing seeds of love. The list goes on
Another compelling reaction. Almost anything by these boys is good. Their next album Songs From the Big Chair is very good, as is Sowing the Seeds of Love and also the Kurt-less Elemental.
From the UK weekly chart show Top of the Pops. Everyone was obliged to mime. Tears for Fears were a class act. Always had substance to back up the hits. Went through some primal scream therapy as did John Lennon. Listen to Shout.
I’m so glad you loved the Woman In Chains instrumental. I didn’t know Pale Shelter. It’s very good! Thank you, Scott and Lee! Head Over Heels is one of my favorites, too. (Don’t take my heart don’t break my heart Don’t Don’t Don’t throw it away)
This was in the very early days when they were very similar to a number of other ‘New romantic’ bands. Even then they were at the top of the pile. As they became more confident and gained more independence for their writing style they emerged from outright 3 min pop music to evolve something that transcended pop in its complexity and began to deliver amazing albums. Most of the rest of the bands from this period never got any further than this.
I was reading up on this song and I thought it was about a guy singing to a girl but it was actually said that it's more about parental love or lack of to a child... that's deep yo!!
This first album (The Hurting) didn't get radio play in the US. They didn't break through to the US market until the 2nd album (Songs from the Big Chair). This whole album is also phenomenal.
Laid So Low( Tears Roll Down), Elemental, and Break It Down Again, plus their brand new single Astronaut, all worth a listen if you are looking for lesser known tracks.
I especially used to listen to Songs from the Big Chair getting ready to go out in the 80s. 😁Every track was excellent and so layered. Head Over Heels probably my favourite.
Other great songs by TFF: Shout, Mad World, Everybody Wants To Rule The World and the very beatle-esque Sowing The Seeds Of Love. And if you want to hear another similar band in the British 80s new wave genre, check out OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), Enola Gay or Maid of Orleans are good starting points.
Mad World is also in Donny Darko isn't it? In a version by Gary Jules, but the original is from Tears for Fears. Another great song is Sowing the seeds of love.

Really good reactiin. They've just released a couple of tracks from their new album. Well worth listening to Astronaut - especially as a drummer. Every TFF album has a completely different vibe

I think this was mimed on the show at the time. I don't think it's dubed over. A lot of the 80's TV performances were not live and they hate miming. They are amazing live.
In my opinion, Woman In Chains is their masterpiece, closely followed by Sowing The Seeds Of Love (which is the best Beatles song that the Beatles didn't write), both have Roland on lead vocal. They have a massive catalogue of great songs, they've just dropped 4 new songs, The Girl That I call Home, Astronaut, Say Goodbye To Mum And Dad, and Emily Said, all 4 have the TFF DNA and are awesome.
Finally got round to this - TFF have been with me since 1983 when this album came out. Sometimes mentioned in the same breath as Lennon/McCartney. Consistently brilliant, I don’t know one mediocre TFF song 👍🏻 Saw them live in 1990 and they are releasing more material right now. One of the best bands in the world IMO. Check out Sowing the Seeds of Love from the same album as Woman in Chains.

Great pick Scotty! Thanks for posting the lyrics and the comment about the song being about paternal love. And for L33 - THERE WERE WORDS IN THIS SONG! I FOUND THEM VERY DISTRACTING!
