- 1979: Following the McGovern-Fraser Commission, America's major political parties shifted away from the selection of presidential candidates in "smoke-filled rooms" and towards state-by-state primaries. Proponents of the primary system argued that the new process was more democratic and transparent, while opponents argued the media has too much influence in the new method and that the primaries tended to elect candidates who looked good on TV, but who could not govern. Who's right? A panel of experts debates the issue.

well. no. one would still have to gather enough support for party leaders from more than just the key states in the old system
