Chaz, wow, I Just love how clear and articulate you are in your explanation of Mosaic. No assumptions from you whatsoever and though some may see that as redundant or boring I think it’s great. I just feel bad Rodney only managed to score 3 points at the end of the game (lol). You are a great addition to this channel. Cheers!
Heyhey, thanks so much for the kind words! I must confess, Rodney did such a great job guiding me through the process of making this tutorial that I almost feel bad that he only scored three measly points in the sample game. Not bad enough to not mention it or show his score on camera. But almost. Thanks for watching and sharing a comment with us! :D -Chaz
UPDATED! The following items are now in this corrected version of the tutorial: 1. In the "SET UP: Trade Goods Tokens" chapter, removed an extra token that was in an illegal location on the board, and should not have been there. 2. In the "SET UP: Make the Tax & Tariff Deck" chapter, added the instruction that an equal number of Tax and Tariff cards should be used when constructing the Tax & Tariff deck. Previously, this instruction was missing. 3. In the "SET UP: Make the Build Deck" chapter, corrected the instruction for adding the Scoring card to the Build deck. Previously, it was instructed to split the deck in thirds. This has been changed to splitting the deck in half.
@@EgeTunca To be clear, these aren’t corrections needed for “this” video, but a note for people who saw our original upload (that was missing these updates). This new upload includes them, so for everyone coming to “this” video now (which will be most people), this isn’t something they need to be aware of. Hope that makes sense.

I think it's very, very impressive when a designer can take something that is usually humongously difficult to grasp and distill it down into a much easier game. I've heard this game does a great job of simplifying civ game mechanics & concepts.

Thank you so much for this. I got this game from Santa (wife) and can't wait to play it. I'll read the rulebook but these videos are always a leg up. BTW, I couldn't tell if you were saying cavalry or calvary but it's cavalry for sure. Common mistake.
I have the game, I played a ton, but I still don't understand this Trade Goods Token setup... I use a house rule and just use a draw bag to fill up the spaces with face up tokens instantly, after that I remove the X tokens and it's all set. Why bother flipping the tokens face down, then flip everything face up.
Excellent video, as usual. Thanks Chaz! Side note: When I saw the video thumbnail, my first thought was "Oh, that beard looks good on Rodney. Makes him look more serious." 😅
I played Terraforming Mars a few weeks ago, and I thought that game was complicated... Tonight my friends want to play this. I think they hate me. Thanks for the tutorial video!

@@WatchItPlayed I had fun. I came in last place. The first place player beat me by exactly 100 points. They said I did really well at holding my own for my first time playing. I actually think I liked it a little more than terraforming Mars because there was less things to do per round, even though there were more options.
Wonderfully concise and clean 'how to play' video. But I am confused by your placing of a 5 population token in your supply at start of play at 6:05 in the video. I cannot find this in the rules. Please help me with this. Thanks!
Hello. I believe that is in the "Select a Player Board" paragraph on page 9 of the Mosaic rulebook: _"At the start of the game, each player receives 5 Population."_ I hope this information is helpful! -Chaz
Don't worry, Casey! Everything okay; it will be alright. And by that, I mean certain doom is imminent. But other than that - everything's peachy. 🙂👍 -Chaz
At 2:06, I don't get why you place the tokens in those bottom 2 hexes. They don't show all six sides and so are incomplete/covered and doesn't the rulebook say to not add them to there? Just seems a little confusing why those incomplete hexes were chosen to have a token but others weren't.
Great question. If a hex space has 6 sides (even if some of some of its sides are shorter, due to being cut off by other graphics on the board) then it is considered to be a complete hex space, and a token would go there. That's why tokens would go in those two spaces shown in the example: even though the box area those hexes (for Tax & Tariff cards, Holding Area, Military, etc.) overlaps those two hexes, the remaining portion of those two hexes that are shown can still be traced to show six different sides. I hope this information is helpful. Cheers! -Chaz
@@matebrunner5195 I can appreciate the confusion, but we work directly with the publisher on all our tutorial videos, so they are checked over before they go public. That doesn't mean a mistake can't sometimes slip through, but this was a specific question we asked the designer during the creation of this video and I can say with confidence, Chaz's answer above is correct. The unfortunate reality is that rule books sometimes contain errors, or aren't clear, and these videos give us a chance to make things clear, or correct those errors - this means sometimes the videos are more up-to-date than the rule books themselves. -Rodney
Excellent question. Fish always equal 5 food. In that scene, I should have included an additional, second fish token in my payment. I apologize for the confusion that this oversight may have caused. Great question. The rules to Mosaic itself weren't changed or updated. There were just three minor corrections that needed to be made to our video. The items that were changed in the video are listed in its description, and in a pinned comment. I hope this helps! -Chaz
Good catch. I hope that didn't cause you confusion. I've added a note to the video's description that addresses that I accidentally used 7 Food to purchase a card that costs 12 Food. (One of my Fish tokens, worth 5 Food, fell off the table right before I slid them into place, and I didn't notice the error.) Five more units of Food than what are shown on-screen should have been used to purchase that card. -Chaz

Great teach! Thanks! Question: Some city cards say “Add 5/10 coins to the Tax & Tariff bonus area” while other city cards don’t. Is this a editing error or for these cards do we add double the amount of coins? Thanks!!!
Hello! I had that same question during the research for this tutorial. I looked through my notes to double-check, and found the confirmation from the publisher that the Tax & Tariff fee text that appears on some cards is just a reminder of the rule. It is not an additional fee to pay. I hope this helps! -Chaz
That is a good question! In this thread (on the game's BoardGameGeek forum (boardgamegeek.com/thread/2961959/article/41192986#41192986), I found a link to a FAQ document that states: "The "?" Trade Goods tile is used to represent the wild trade good obtained via the "Craftsmanship" Technology card." I hope this helps! -Chaz
Very helpful thank you! Last question I had was for the government tile, if you flip to replenish a row but then buy a new government tile you can now use the action again. So is it once per tile per game I.e. potentially 6 replenished rows, or if you switch governments but later buy a previously owned government back, do you now have the ability again or does it go into your play area already flipped to the used side?
I double checked with the publisher, and confirmed that every time a player obtains a government tile, they receive it ready to use. So, in the scenario you described, the player would be able to use the ability of their previously owned government tile once again after they re-purchase it. I hope this helps! -Chaz
Are you sure if a government tile goes back to the pile it resets the arrow? I thought the flushing of a deck was only allowed once per game for the government tiles.
Yep, the arrow is reset when the government tile goes back in the pile. We were able to receive a confirmation from the game's designer as well: _"Yes. Each new government tile comes with that free action [clearing a card offering]. If a player replaces their government with a new one, they may clear one of the four card offerings on the board again. If they can pull off two governments, or three (!!!), they would have certainly earned the right to clear an offer more than once."_ I hope this information is helpful! -Chaz
