Just finished our baler here in NZ. This is a pretty crazy way to do it for most people, IMO. But it does lead you to more self reliance and is economical on storage space. Plus if you live in a high wind area(like us) then a haystack just blows away so that's another bonus. ...Not to mention it's good exercise.
So the weed eater with the blade works for cutting hay? I was told it would chop it up too much. But I’ll def do that if it works! I’ve got about 4 acres to do (lol)
Making hay bales by hand with a box is relatively new, not "old fashioned." Until the mid 19th C., people just stacked hay, which was quite an art. Then mechanical mowers and balers came along at about the same time. Boxing hay bales is not something farmers did. It's a new fashion, but not authentically historic.
it's the old-fashioned way to make bales, what's new is baling hay at all, unlike straw. Quite a lot of early mechanization went into handling loose hay as well.
