    RIP Damo. Thanks for taking a chance on a kid like me back in the day. Performing with you those two times, especially when I was so young, is an experience I will forever cherish. You and your music influenced my life in so many ways, you were one of the kindest, sweetest people I ever met and I'll miss you dearly.

    met Damo in Thailand in about 2000 in a cozy bar with a diverse music collection. I had no idea of his fame/reputation. Just an unpretentious, quirky, friendly guy that I liked to hang out with and talk about life, adventure, art, etc.. Months later, he very generously sent me some of his CDs as a gift, which I enjoyed, something different for my already pretty eclectic collection. Lost touch with him after a few years as my life got complicated and absorbed more of my attention. Being free but (human)-connected, following his instincts and curiosity certainly seemed to me at the time to be central to his values. I think we both tried to steer clear of political discussions -- probably we both recognized it as laden with baggage and expectations too cumbersome for us to have more of a "free" communication.

      @@pazuzu1 For sure, bro, but tell that to some average fan of some conventional artist, like Beyonce. 90% of those fans (i'm guessing) never heard about Damo but 99% of Damo fans (probably 100%, i'm guessing again) heard about Beyonce. That's make him a legend of non-conventional music.

    He REALLY doesn't like talking about Can, so I can see his restrained frustration. (I know him, so I'm not assuming, by the way).
    I feel for him and it's kind of hard to see but interesting, of course.

      NOWtheband is there a reason he doesn’t like to talk about can?

    • @hitmanTilliMDeaD
      @hitmanTilliMDeaD 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@Creaturefiendyo After doing some digging around, I'm thinking the reason is that Can was such a short part of his life, from 1970-1974, whereas he's been touring and making music from 1984 till now. So maybe he just wants people to talk more about the music he's making now.

    • @johnzuras6378
      @johnzuras6378 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny. That is always the case. I know someone who was so highly influenced by CAN and the same will be said about his projects that the youth only cares about.

    • @NOWtheband
      @NOWtheband 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnzuras6378 - I wouldn't say "always" the case. I know some older musicians who enjoy discussing their past creativity. Damo is the only artist I've spent time with who doesn't like discussing his past.
      :-)

      @NOWtheband 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Creaturefiendyo - He's never allowed me to dwell long enough on the subject to find out. Besides, I learned it was off-limits long ago, ha ha!
      Daniel Ellis may have a good point, though.
      Personally I think it may also involve some interpersonal band politics or relationship issue that none of us know about because he seems slightly TOO vehement about not discussing it, as if something went on behind closed doors involving just him and other Can members.

    After listening to this I am embracing instant composing. I sometimes have songs okay in my head, or when I have a guitar or keyboard I'll just play through something, and sometimes I feel like that wouldn't count in some way, but now I feel like recording and sharing that stuff is as valid as composing something overtime.

    Damo Suzuki hasn’t changed at all from the time when we shared the stage three decades ago somewhere in Germany. He’s no idea what he’s talking about. His self expression is so poor not just because of his poor English but because of his poor presentation of himself. Ridiculous to say that he doesn’t want to share things from the past with younger people in the audience due to the age difference. He’s not representing or speaking of the Japanese musicians I know and worked with. Just a bla bla talker. He was so lucky to join CAN at that time cause he was such a Dilettant. In one thing I agree with him: yes, you were not a cool singer or musician in Can. His musical contribution wasn’t as great as some people believe. He reminds me of Yoko Ohno. Without John she couldn’t have performed or recorded with anybody. Damo, wake up and become an adult! I’m SADATO. Do you remember me?

      @@rankus Sorry to hurt your feelings. Wasn't my intention. Just that you know how I came up with my comments about Damo: 1. I lived in Japan from 1974 to 2008. And I know the Japanese, Japan (music) culture and language very well. 2. I made a name there as a professional musician and worked with many respected jazz, punk, rock, noise and world musicians who I have a lot of respect for. 3. Japan is my 3rd home country.
      By saying so, I don't like when I hear from Japanese (musicians) outside of Japan representing themselves or their country in a way which is not true or authentic. If you don't agree with me, that's all right but I'm not schizophrenic. (Besides, I would love to be on a panel discussion with Damo and comment to his comments in person and in public.). In solidarity and music.

      @@musiciansformusicians4045 It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Damo isn't exactly a virtuoso singer or an excellent speaker (he's even expressed it himself). That in no way detracts from the genius or creative prowess of this individual who was never afraid to venture to honestly express his art, even if he had to give up fame to continue doing what he loved. From the content of your comment it appears that you are a frustrated clown who cannot cope with the fact that you are neither as creative and charismatic as Damo and thus as popular as him.
