Im with you bro. At 70…since JA and then Hot Tuna… cherished times. Barrel House and Fur Peace we met and talked, about the old days, 4 hr. Shows…”We don’t do that anymore”, you said. I feel so fortunate.
Thanks to Johnny Depp and the movie Transcendence and me watching it back in 2014 when I was 24 years old, I found this masterpiece. I’m going on 32 now and haven’t stopped listening to it since. What and amazing musician and a timeless masterpiece.💙💯
Yeah, I easily cry listening to this song.. I like to write, I like to create melodies with my guitar, but I cannot even imagine the state of inspiration he must have had to combine both in such masterpiece..
The midrange tones of big, rosewood Martin guitars are quieter than the bass and treble ranges. Jorma uses this to perfection here. He sings right in that pocket of beautiful fingerstyle. What touch!
I remember when I got my first good acoustic guitar. A Martin DCX1E, which is behind me on its wall rack. I knew I had to make this the first song I learned on my new spiffy geeetar, lol So that is what I did. One problem is that while I have the tune down on the guitar note for note, easy now.(was not that easy way back then) but I can`t sing and play at the same time.If I tried to do that way back....?
I still remember hearing "Genesis" on a local small radio station. I called repeatedly for months to hear it. Then I found "Quah". These are events that are etched into a young brain forever. Bravo!
probably you're right.. but there are other shades of music that can bring me without words somewhere else this song cannot take me to.. let me know if you want about "Boards Of Canada - Seven Forty Seven" "M83 - Noise" "brian eno invisible" (the first result).. clearly totally different things but everyone takes me somewhere.. and also Brian Eno composed one of the best songs of all times, "Just another day"
i love you Jorma, Thank you for a lifetime of music. Thank you for the pleasure you have given me and so many others. the real, feeling, caring world loves you,
Thanks, Jorma. I'm 66 in 2023, and I've been... not following exactly, but appreciating your guidance since I was 15. I would love to come to FurPeaceRanch, but I've got these cats to feed... I've never looked away. And you have helped.
The time has come for us to pause And think of living as it was Into the future we must cross (must cross) And I'd like to go with you And I'd like to go with you You say I'm harder than a wall A marble shaft about to fall I love you dearer than them all (them all) So let me stay with you So let me stay with you And as we walked into the day Skies of blue had turned to grey I might have not been clear to say (to say) I never looked away I never looked away And though I'm feeling you inside My life is rolling with the tide I'd like to see it be an open ride Along with you Going along with you The time we borrowed from ourselves Can't stay within a vaulted well And living turns into a lender's well So let me come with you And let me come with you And when we came out into view And there I found myself with you And breathing felt like something new Along with you Going along with you
Gonna see Hot Tuna in 6 days!! Im going to be on cloud one million when jorma plays this. Im 27 years old and have dreamed about the day I get to see Airplane, and since Im sure that will never happen Hot Tuna will do just fine!!! Extremely happy I get to be a part of such a great time in music. Forever Tuna forever Airplane!!
Sorry if I am too late but he rarely does this song live. You would think it was a staple in his set...but I have never seen him play it live. Let me know how your show went. I know you saw a damn good show, Genesis or not!!!
Jorma is an underrated guitarist. He has always been an excellent musician. Top rated guitarist with a unique sound. From a generation of individualists.
I HAVEN'T HEARD THIS IN 40 + YEARS!! WOW- MORE THAN I WANT TO ADMIT. THIS MAN IS BETTER THAN FINE WINE! HIS VOICE IS A PURE AND SIMPLE GIFT ! WHICH HE PUT TO GOOD USE!
One of my greatest concert experiences was sitting backstage of the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago and watching Hot Tuna doing an all acoustic set. I was about 20' for Jack and Jorma. Fast forward 37 years and I have tickets for Hot Tuna at the Bijou in Knoxville. Ninth row center, and I am thrilled.
Last night I was surprised to hear Genesis on the radio (WFUV). It's a song I could hear forever with my wife at my side. My hat's off to Jorma Kaukonen.
I'll always remember my dad and his friend jamming on their Gibsons, working on learning this, and just jamming in general. Both have passed over ten years ago, and I still feel the draw of the guitar. May all the guitar masters pass along the knowledge/talent they have when they can.
Thank you Jorma. You, and your music are timeless. So comforting in our time quarantine. I learned this when I first started finger picking in 1976, and still struggle with that A7 pinky bend. It’s those little details that separate the great players from the rest of us.
JORMA I FOLLOWED YOU SINCE THE JEFF.AIRPLANE DAYS AND NOW AT FPR. YOU ARE TRULY A AMERICAN ICON,A GREAT MUSICIAN,Guitarist,SONGWRITER,JACK CASSIDY,JOHN H,WILL ALWAYS REPRESENT,FREEDOM,LOVE ,THE PRECIOUS EARTH AND OF COURSE MUSIC HISTORY AND TO ALL OF YOUR FAMILY,s I TRULY WISH YOU ALL THE BEST IN LIFE 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶✌️😎BOB.
Jorma, you haven't lost a beat or a note in all these years, your voice is just as I remembered it from your days with Jefferson Airplane......each note as if it were from the original recording! Jeez........you're still so good, don't ever stop the music..........
Jorma's singing on this song is more refined now than it was when I first heard it - in the early 70's. I wasn't more than 15 feet from him , those were the days.
My father had Lewy body dementia. A secondary Parkinson's dementia. He had fallen into total numbness, into the most irremediable rigidity. He then he took the guitar, sang this song. And the agility of hands and mind magically returned. The human body is something indecipherable, mysterious and, in some ways, fascinating.
The time has come for us to pause And think of living as it was Into the future we must cross (must cross) And I'd like to go with you And I'd like to go with you You say I'm harder than a wall A marble shaft about to fall I love you dearer than them all (them all) So let me stay with you So let me stay with you And as we walked into the day Skies of blue had turned to grey I might have not been clear to say (to say) I never looked away I never looked away And though I'm feeling you inside My life is rolling with the tide I'd like to see it be an open ride Along with you Going along with you The time we borrowed from ourselves Can't stay within a vaulted well And living turns into a lender's well So let me come with you And let me come with you And when we came out into view And there I found myself with you And breathing felt like something new Along with you Going along with you
I just received Jorma's book "BEEN so LONG" and in the foreword by Grace Slick she mentioned "Genesis". So here I am on TH-cam for my first listening and I'm not disappointed. Thank you Jorma for for the music from Jefferson Airplane and the "Embryonic Journey"...now back to the book.
i saw you do this in Trenton NJ in the late 70s or very early 80s. Thank you. My heart was full then and is full now with you. We love Captain. We always will. Love Wayne and Cindy.
Jorma, your music inspires me on a daily basis. You truly are a master of folk music and showing that you can do it yourself in a way that defies expectations on this day and age.
Two things, 1) this is a masterpiece. It's everything I want in a song. Jorma is getting us, and if you get the chance see him. The right answer to the question "how many times did you see Jorma"? is every chance I could. 2) how did 21 people dislike this song enough to give it a thumbs down? Sad.
I always liked Jorma's music - the stuff he has written - above and beyond the classics that fill his sets. I've been out of touch but wonder if he has ever done of a show of just his compositions. His lyrics show the depth of his genius. Genesis is so beautiful.
This song now takes on a new dimension for me, having the good fortune to have read an advance copy of Jorma's book "Been So Long" that comes out in a few weeks 8/28/18 . And like a bonus track, I learned that it was our mutual old friend, the late great Mallory Earl , a recording engineer and idea man extraordinare, who suggested the strings on the original recording on "Quah" . Listening & Reading = Learning
Freaking me out. I cued a number of tunes on the "watch later" feature yesterday and a couple of hours ago I had listened to five of them and then stopped to watch the movie "Transcendence" which we had just bought earlier today... ...and this video, which I had cued next on the list, followed by the 1974 recording, sung and played by Jorma, is throughout the movie... ...most would call it just a random coincidence... I know better.
I was late coming to discover him, though Embryonic Journey stood out and blew me away when I was very young. What a perfect mix of voice, instrument, and writing. Awesome indeed.
I believe I was 17 when I bought Quah. This song got me through a lot. Just love the way he plays. Never gets old 50 years later.
Im with you bro. At 70…since JA and then Hot Tuna… cherished times. Barrel House and Fur Peace we met and talked, about the old days, 4 hr. Shows…”We don’t do that anymore”, you said. I feel so fortunate.
This is pure genius, passion, wisdom and talent. What a gift he is to the world - and what an enchanting piece he has created. Thank you, Jorma!
This is my go to tribute song to my late wife...speaks to me in a profound way and always bring the tears..beautiful song.
May she rest easy....
Amen 🙏
Thanks to Johnny Depp and the movie Transcendence and me watching it back in 2014 when I was 24 years old, I found this masterpiece. I’m going on 32 now and haven’t stopped listening to it since. What and amazing musician and a timeless masterpiece.💙💯
I saw that movie. It was in the very beginning of the movie. Ahhhhh! Transcendence=Genesis pretty clever !!
I love to watch old rock stars age gracefully. He was and is great.
Jorma has socks older than most of usa
I saw him in concert a few years ago and totally agree!
Have been listening to this gorgeous song for over 40 years. It still gives me shivers. Thanks, Jorma!
What album did it first appear on?
Sends chills up and down my spine. I'm 19 years old again!
it makes me wish I was born to live those years..!
exactly... 17... a visceral memory.. summer nights in Harvard Square, coming of age..
Jorma's voice , tone and notes are like no other . It touches one soul , it brings tears to the eyes .
What touch!
Amazing-I felt like crying too-so very soulful yet peaceful-there’s a super old version-that’s even better clearer-I know but haven’t found it yet
Such a beautiful song. One of my all time favorites!❤️
Love him, and I’m so happy to have actually met him.. 40 years ago❤
I still remember hearing "Genesis" on a local small radio station. I called repeatedly for months to hear it. Then I found "Quah". These are events that are etched into a young brain forever. Bravo!
Dylan once wrote...a song is anything that can walk by itself...this song will always be the most beautiful ever written
probably you're right.. but there are other shades of music that can bring me without words somewhere else this song cannot take me to.. let me know if you want about
"Boards Of Canada - Seven Forty Seven"
"M83 - Noise"
"brian eno invisible" (the first result)..
clearly totally different things but everyone takes me somewhere.. and also Brian Eno composed one of the best songs of all times, "Just another day"
One of my favourite Kaukonen originals since the release of the Quah album in 1974.
Quah was such a fundamental album....... this song brings the same feeling back each time its heard.......perennially beautiful.........
I still listen to Jorma or and Jack they calm me down during the pandemic
i love you Jorma, Thank you for a lifetime of music. Thank you for the pleasure you have given me and so many others. the real, feeling, caring world loves you,
I do agree...poetic, noetic Jorma
Thanks, Jorma. I'm 66 in 2023, and I've been... not following exactly, but appreciating your guidance since I was 15. I would love to come to FurPeaceRanch, but I've got these cats to feed... I've never looked away. And you have helped.
I will always love this song...and he sings it just as perfectly as he did 40 yrs ago!! GREAT!!
So so glad I watched transcendence or I'd never have come across this beautiful song
I HEARD THIS SONG ABOUT 40+ YEARS AGO AND LOVE IT TODAY MORE!
"And though I'm feeling you inside, my life is rolling with the tide..."
Beautiful Jorma ⚘
Our lives have been enriched and blessed by you being there. Happy birthday Jorma, from Greg and Julie Moon, Los Angeles/Long Beach. Thank you.
Amazing! His voice is much softer and velvety-like than in the 80ies. I Love Jorma. His music has always been a part of my life
An underrated song master...his music belongs to the ages...
Going back to about 1970, I learned more about guitar from this guy than any other. A master.
One of the Great Master Acoustic Guitarist going today.....Great Lyricists....What can you say about Jorma except Genius.
This guy just keeps getting better every year. And he was excellent 50 years ago.
The time has come for us to pause
And think of living as it was
Into the future we must cross (must cross)
And I'd like to go with you
And I'd like to go with you
You say I'm harder than a wall
A marble shaft about to fall
I love you dearer than them all (them all)
So let me stay with you
So let me stay with you
And as we walked into the day
Skies of blue had turned to grey
I might have not been clear to say (to say)
I never looked away
I never looked away
And though I'm feeling you inside
My life is rolling with the tide
I'd like to see it be an open ride
Along with you
Going along with you
The time we borrowed from ourselves
Can't stay within a vaulted well
And living turns into a lender's well
So let me come with you
And let me come with you
And when we came out into view
And there I found myself with you
And breathing felt like something new
Along with you
Going along with you
He's changed the wording here. He never asks, "let me....". Instead he says, "I'd like to.
.."
It's very sweet.
Thank you for your lovely comment. @@elissaaleph
Never gets old.. Thank you Jorma..
Yes, indeed, music of a timeless quality!
Absolutely one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written and recorded! A true masterpiece 🤩
Jorma !:! Beautiful, Astonishing !:! Jorma wrote this beautiful spiritual song ... weaving magical guitar and whispering lyrics to feed my soul.
Gonna see Hot Tuna in 6 days!! Im going to be on cloud one million when jorma plays this. Im 27 years old and have dreamed about the day I get to see Airplane, and since Im sure that will never happen Hot Tuna will do just fine!!! A gentle giant of a guitar player. Beautiful song straight from the heart. One to one communication.
Such a poignant, beautiful song! Always brings tears to my eyes.

Among my favorite songs. Just beautiful. No one like Jorma on this planet!
Jorma is an underrated guitarist. He has always been an excellent musician. Top rated guitarist with a unique sound. From a generation of individualists.

And now, one year shy of 50 years. Unforgettable!!!

What an amazing performance!
The first concert I ever saw was Hot Tuna in 1972, and Jorma has remained one of the most important musicians for me ever since.
Right there with you...
This song nestled into my soul in '74; still lives there like an old love.
Last night in Portland ME Jorma ended his show with this beautiful song. ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you Jorma. You, and your music are timeless. So comforting in our time quarantine. I learned this when I first started finger picking in 1976, and still struggle with that A7 pinky bend. It’s those little details that separate the great players from the rest of us.
surreal song, amazing, the softest shit combining all the most badass folk guitar and singing

Takes you right along with him, thanks.

That is as beautiful now as it was the first time I heard it , .........More so than then !
OMG, Jorma, you are so special. Thanks so much for singing your classic.

always loved this song so beautiful!!!

The human body is something indecipherable, mysterious and, in some ways, fascinating.
Loved your 4-5 hour shows in the mid 70’s in Passaic NJ. Great memories. You still sound great. Thx
Always so new and fresh.
Love the lyric + progression + what a great touch. Does life get much better than this?

Jorma, il musicista dei miei sogni, divenuto realtà una sera d'estate del 1986 alla Rocca di Cesena...❤...love you forever...
Remember songs with emotions and people who could really play instruments? This one's a gem by Jorma.
makes me cry every time

GOD YES! now I have something to watch and listen to learn this song.. tabs are not for me.. but this is The Thing, man, thanks for the upload!
Love this so much
Where is the love button?!?!!!!
Or the AWESOME button. Discovered Jorma when I was 15 and starting to learn guitar. I'm 42 now and still hold him as a personal musical god.
I was late coming to discover him, though Embryonic Journey stood out and blew me away when I was very young. What a perfect mix of voice, instrument, and writing. Awesome indeed.
A gift from Heaven.
Thanks John for "The Old Homestead" - I love that tune! Joel from "Brush"! Jorma, terrific as always!
