The very best thing about Ra's auctions are they are asymmetrical. A tile set on offer may be tremendously valuable for one player and useless for another. Taking advantage of that when it's your turn is one of the great gambits in the game.
The first time I played Ra, a friend of mine was the only one left in the second epoch. There was only one Ra tile remaining. They filled up the ENTIRE track, one by one, with tiles. The rest of us kept chanting "Ra! Ra! Ra!" but Ra NEVER came! They got all the tiles for cheap! It was amazing.
I watched your video about talking to the students and how you were in a bad mood while making this one. However I bought this game because of this review. So I hope that makes you feel good.
I have seen players "shoot the moon" in that way multiple times in Ra, and every time it's hilarious because it's a direct result of the bystander effect: "oh man, he's got 3 tiles left, someone has to stop him!" 'Well, I'm not calling an auction on two pharaohs and a civilization with a 10, you do it!' Classic
I absolutely love your reviews! at 95% of my board game purchases are from your reviews. It brings attention to games I, would of never thought of to look at. Me and my 3 brothers play a board game every week and I think is going to be this week's one. Keep up the great work!
Once in Catan I had an ore port and had 3 cities built on an ore tile, and another city built on the same number for wheat. I went from like 3 cards to 10 and cashed it all out through my ports to get what I needed to win, it was great.
I think it's probably my favorite auction game. The push your luck element is so tension inducing. It has the perfect blend of luck and strategy and it really seems like a game show that's exciting to watch even if you are out of the round yourself. When you are the only person left and are trying to push your luck while not drawing ra tiles people around the table are chanting "ra, ra, ra," hoping that you draw that tile that ends your round. The only thing I would say about this new version is thst the older version looked better. I like the board, but some of the tiles are very hard to make out (like the Nile tiles) in the new version. I wish they just kept the old look, and maybe changed the colors of the components.

It's one of our favorite quick filler card games. It is super simple but has the same surprisingly deep and interesting choice/betting mechanics as you were describing.

I played for the first time with my family the other day so 3 of us, and I found everyone just calls ra immediately because whoever has the 13 first is just going to win? Like you can get everything and then on your turn call ra on everyone else ? Am I missing something?
Whoever has the 13 first is going to win the first auction, then they swap the current number (1) with their 13. Whoever wins the second auction will get the 13, and so on...
@@MrMoonwalkingBear you can only use your 13 tile *once*. Then it's put in the middle of the auction board for the winner of the next auction. Remember, the winning bid gets the tiles and the bid token from the previous bid.
@@cdlftw_ I know but look at it like this the first round happens and the player with the 13 lets the tiles to go up a lot and then wins it as they have the 13. Then they lose the 13 but they are leading as they got the tiles. Now everytime it is their turn they call RA, so nobody can catch up to them as they only win one or two tiles each time it is their turn. So maybe that is it you just can't play it with 3 people
@@MrMoonwalkingBear it plays great at 3, I played it just this weekend with that count. It doesn't advance the turn counter when they invoke RA. Plus, the player who has used their 13 only has 8, 5 and 2 remaining (per setup). So *anyone* with a 9, 10, 11 or 12 could easily win the action.

One of my absolute favorites. Had about three different "Eureka!" moments as I learned this game and saw how the systems linked up. Perfect.

I passed on this version of the game and bought the dice game version. It has become one of our favorite super-casual games to take on vacation.

I'd agree if it had a cleaner, slicker design (e.g. cut the Location concept entirely). Great ideas in that game though.
