  • This Caddis utilizes CDC feathers that have been used already on other flies. Many times (with quite a few patterns) you will use just the tip of the CDC feather. Therefor you have almost an entire feather unusable for your following flies. But I utilize a clip to get all the goodness from each feather I can. You can use other colored CDC here as well to create different colored caddis. Its easy to tie, and floats super high because of the CDC. And best of all, no need to use floatant as CDC has a natural oil in it that keeps it afloat. Get creative with different feathers for your wings and create whatever type of caddis fly you want.
    The review of these chip clips came out earlier this week, if you want to see that video and a closer detail of the clips, you can view that here... • How this kitchen tool ...
    Just letting you know, even though I did not use someone else pattern to create this fly (basically just came up with it on my vise), that does not mean someone else has not come up with this pattern or something close to it in the past. I didn't go off of other's patterns for this, but I am sure somewhere along the way I probably saw something similar to this. If you know of a pattern similar, or the same that has already been tied, don't hesitate to let me know. Just keep in mind, I am in no way trying to steal someone elses pattern, so I would appreciate you not getting angry, just simply tell me where you have seen it before, and Id be happy to mention that fly here in the description section. With so many different patterns out there, someone probably has come up with a fly like this before, and it might even be a fairly common pattern. Just not one Ive personally took note of in the past. Thank you!

    i have two buckets that i keep where i tie my flies. one bucket is for new materials and my threads, the other is what i put all my fly tying "trash" into. i hate wasting stuff because i dont like to spend money. i also have a small box that i keep feathers that i find at the river it has goose feathers, many pigeon feathers, a variety of duck feathers and some partridge hackle which is where i get white dubbing

      Yep, same here! Only mine aren’t buckets, they are gallon sized bags. Same thing though, I sort my different materials. One bag has feathers, another has synthetics. And then one other for materials I use regularly.

      Cool! Here is a link to some stuff I find a bit better priced for how much you get. Hareline is a common brand and yes they sometimes skimp a bit on the CDC. But it’s hard to find the right colors available with the polish quills brand CDC as they are regularly sold out. competitiveangler.com/shop/body-materials/feathers-hackle/polish-quills-polish-cdc-feathers/

    For your wing feather try eastern partridge or the small brown breast feathers from a mallard. Google the Nancy’s Prayer caddis emerger, or Eddie Raif’s West Branch caddis to see an example of the wing feather.

    I've also been known to use my cats under fur. I don't know why but this cat has extra fine under fur just like rabbit hair. And it's like a grayish blackish color which really fits a lot of applications

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool! Hopefully you don’t shave your car just for this. Lol! Probably wouldn’t work on a dry fly, but a good way to maybe save money on rabbit dubbing?

    grabbing the tip of lead wire to the shank with hackle pliers allows it to be turned and helicoptered off with zero waste with only a minor manipulation required to wrap the small tag.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put lead on a bobbin holder and I waste nothing also.

    • @jasrobsny
      @jasrobsny 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@McFlyAngler Even on a bobbin holder you have to do something with the starting tag. Holding the tag with fingers leaves a much longer length to fiddle around.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not for me, I do absolutely no waste, I’ve seen that other trick, but I can do the same thing with my fingers instead of a hackle plier. Just makes it a little quicker

  • @jasrobsny

    If I have anything kind of strand left over (wire, floss, tubing, super hair) I tape it to the original package so I use it up first before grabbing any more out of the package.

  • @alkinceratfafterthefly6284
    @alkinceratfafterthefly6284 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I use the fluff from my craft fur as dubbing. Isn't aaaas thin as regular rabbit dubbing but it does work.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya for sure! Good for different applications. In fact some flies probably would benefit from the extra coarseness

    That looks like A great pattern with little waste. I'm cheap so I always save every last little piece until it is completely unusable. Do you have any suggestions for fly's to tie for brook trout in new Brunswick Canada?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can suggest flies for brookies, but not for brookies in Canada. Never fished anywhere in Canada before, sorry! For the most part your trying to mimic your local big hatches. But I just don’t know what yours are.
      Glad you like the video, yes I’m the same way... I don’t like to waste. Haha! Some call it being cheap, I call it smart. Lol!

      Oh for sure, I actually waste a fair amount of material in the videos themselves because well, I'm filming and that takes some extra effort. But, I for sure save as much as possible when im not filming.

    • @jasrobsny

      @@McFlyAngler I get it but on other channels often they will tie a bundle of fibers for wing case and cut off and waste a half an inch of the bundle instead of pulling them through under the wraps. I just don't get that; it costs a couple of seconds to waste none.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree! At times I’ll do that, depending on the material. But for expensive stuff like CDC, or hackle feathers, nooo way! Lol
