Hey Boogie because of you me and my friends starting playing Magic with each other the other day took us all day just to get deck builder box for each and to learn the game, but we loved it once we got it down. I started out with a black and white deck and loved it. Still learning but we love it spent like 5+ hours playing nonstop. Thanks

They really weren't needed. If anything, WotC puts out too much product every year and if anything was gonna be cut, Core sets were the best to go.
I never bought into a core set after my first few packs. They were boring and the same for far to many years.
EmpireToys a core set is the basic card set just rehashed and slightly reworked every year. But I love Chandra themed anything. so it may have just been me.
It was great when I first started playing the game. Nice way to get introduced. Generic themes that had wide appeal. Reasonably simplistic too. The flip side is that it got boring REAL fast. Even as a beginner, I started delving into the theme sets (Zendikar, Mirrodin) about 2-3 months into the game. The fall/spring block sets just have a lot more play value and interesting mechanics.
OmniNero for some reason the core set was always my favorite. I like theros and a couple other sets. But core is the big draw to me.
btw, for those who don't know modern and legacy, past in flames is used in storm decks as a weaker (but still powerful) Yawgmoth's will so that they basically replay all of their rituals and cantrips to reach enough storm count and close with grapeshot or tendrils of agony.

Death's Shadow Zoo in modern is really good. You get really low off of your fetches and shocks and Death's Shadow becomes huge
Past in Flames is used for Storm decks. So on turn 4 you can storm off and kill your opponent with grapeshot or goblins. It's a strong combo card for that deck
Past in Flames gets played in Storm! It's especially good now because the deck uses Gifts Ungiven to tutor up 3 different rituals and PiF meaning regardless of what your opponent sends to grave you'll get to fling a flurry of spells at them the following turn. It's strong.
Yeah no value, but it's definitely a card that gets played.

Past in Flames is a card used in modern storm -- it was $12 for a while (actually, probably at the time they were planning this set, right around SOI), but even before the reprint was announced it tanked to down around 3 or 4, probably due to being reprinted in Commander 2016 and gitaxian probe being banned which made storm weaker.
I love to see you open packs! Something i'd love to see a comparison with Magic online vs Magic duels. I played both and just picked up Duels yesterday. I would really enjoy hearing your thoughts on them. Maybe some game play!
I think you're right about patterns in the set, I think I've seen youtubers open fetchlands in the same order 3x now.

I would love to see them remake or add onto Kamigawa with a new set. That set was awesome nothing like sensei's divining top, umezawa's jitte, and a whole lot of samurai and spirits to have fun with.

The tier 1 deck in Modern right now is Death's Shadow Aggro Boogie, that's why it's worth a bit.
Death's Shadow is valuable because it's a 1 drop that starts off as a 13/13 and get's weaker based on life, so if you're at 5 life and you drop it, you're getting an 8/8 for one black. Only reason it's not worth much is in formats like edh.
Past In Flames, ironically, is used with the card you pulled in the pack previous, Gifts Ungiven. Modern Storm.
Boogie, death shadow is a deck that just has the player ping down their own life total, allows for a very large 1 mana threat around 4 or five turns into the game

boogie could you do a video explaining what formats you play like cube, standard etc and maybe a showcase of the decks you own? I think a lot of people would like to see that. Also if you have the cards i would give modern a try, it sounds like there might be decks you like in the format like burn or black white tokens and you might like it.

boogie don't know if you will see this but Storm in modern uses red add mana cards and manamorphose with goblin electromancer to combo a ton of mana and draws to use past in flames to do it again into Grapeshot for the win

Fetches are fine in standard as long as there are no fetchable duals. Once BFZ rotates they could print fetches. Without fetchable duals fetches are about the same power level as guildgates.

I'm sad I live so far from everything cool. I did get to go to one draft tonight though, so that was cool. It was made more cool by my pack 1 pick 1 of a foil Blood Moon. My Akroma duel EDH deck is happy to have another foil.

Your off camera box sounds strikingly similar to one of Rudys patreon boxes he opened. Starting to think these things are mapable. Lily and goyf seem to show up in the same box way to often, as well as most boxes have either no fetchs or 4-5 fetchs. Very little in between.
i just watched saffron open an almost identical box to this one. so yeah this seems to be very trackable. either you get fetches or you get valueable rares but never both, and mythics seem to be more miss than hit.
My friend plays Death's Shadow in his Mimeoplasm EDH deck. Easy 13 counters.

Death's shadow is part of scavenge combos. Most notably the commander, Varolz. Its a sick deck. But idk if that's what drives the price.
death's shadow is one of the hottest modern decks at the moment, since it is now becoming one of the top tier 1 decks. The basic idea is to get your life total to around 5-10ish in the very first turns and cast a lot of handdisruption on your opp. tarmogoyf, liliana, and deathshadow are the basic wincons, since the two creatures are massive really fast and liliana attacks opposing creatures and hands at the same time. this paired with some of the best removal in G R and B makes the deck very good in the current meta.
And yes, Deadeye is huge in Commander.
Deadeye is soo good in commander. A lot of people want it banned.
Deadeye Navigator is super busted in commander. It enables far too many combos

"deadeye navigator, I guess that's playable in commander" lol I had to laugh at this. just so you know, deadeye is a blue staple in commander and many commander players want to see it band from the format ( crazy infinite combos can be built with it)
Death's Shadow has play with cards such as Worship, etc. Not sure its worth in modern format though, never played in that format.

Ive played magic but not as mutch as warhammer.
The thing i like about warhammer is that you get to play 3D and build and paint but magic is MUTCH cheaper because there just cards

I guess you never looked at recent Storm lists if you don't know a deck that plays Past in Flames.
I suppose you could consider that an Hyppogrif.

Just got into playing magic. I need some help on getting the concept of tokens and clues. Someone please answer?
Usually tokens are byproducts of playing another card, such as Grave Titan whenever he comes into play or attacks you put two 2/2 zombie tokens onto the field, they essentially become tiny creatures but can be buffed fast or in my case i sacrifice them to Grimgrin my commander and he gets outta hand in a hurry. Alot of times tokens are sacrificed to make other things more powerful or to pull off better abilities, but in something like a zombie deck you can flood the playing field with them and it's pretty much GG without a boardwipe. Tokens and clues don't get shuffled into your deck they sit to the side and you use them when called upon or activated.

Hey everyone, I am not really familiar with Magic but would like to get into it. Could you guys give tips on how to start building a collection? Also any links on learning the basics of the game, and terminology? Any tips appreciated :)
benkse2010 you should start with deck builders, they are around $20 and they come with a bunch of cards to make some pretty good decks. And to learn the basics I suggest to go to the magic TH-cam channel and watch the beginner tutorials to learn how to play. Good luck, have fun!
especially as a beginner don't buy booster(cases). go to the nearest gameshop and aks the people to lend you cards or decks and try it out first to learn the basics. YOu also get a free deck from the store if you are new to the game which is not very competitive but serves as a first step into the game.
Then eventually when you understand the mechanics and basic principles you can decide what format to play and buy a deck by buying singles from the secondary market.
Attending prereleases is a lot of fun, since it is a fairly casual and friendly tournament, you get value for the money you spend and meet new people to play and trade with.
On "learning material" itseld just check out youtube, google, forums etc, theres just a load of info everywhere.
