- Carrots are notoriously tricky to grow at home. Not because they're hard plants to care for, but because they're hard seeds to *germinate*. In this video, I'll plant carrot seeds for a fall harvest and show you exactly how to prep your soil, space your rows, plant those carrot seeds, and keep them perfectly happy until they sprout.
Join us and let's plant some carrots together!

What are YOUR favorite carrot germination tips?!
P.S. These seeds germinated in JUST 5 DAYS =)
Great video, thanks! Glad I found your channel!
Glad it was useful! Did you get some seeds in the ground?
Big fan of the transitions and carrot b-roll in this one. Good stuff
Thank you sir! So glad you dug it =)
@NextdoorHomestead Thanks so much for the video! It’s been a few months and I’m wondering if you’ll be posting an update soon. Haven’t seen any posts for a while, and I’m looking forward to your next vid! ❤
New video next week! Although not related to carrots =)
Hope you check it out and thanks for following the channel!
Shade cloth is a great solution 🙌
Thanks for your videos. I really appreciate your explanations. Do you ever have trouble with squirrels or other pests digging up your carrot beds or other beds? How do you protect them? Thanks!
Just wanted to say, I miss your informative videos and I hope you and yours are ok!
Tbh carrots seem like more trouble than they're worth (for my small clay-y garden anyway) when they're so affordable at the grocery, but I watched the video anyway. Now I know what to do if I do ever want to try growing them! I do actually have some gifted seeds, so i just may next spring :)
Thank you so much for these kind words! We're working to get back into the groove of things making more videos after some curveballs =)
I can easily see carrots going into the "not worth it" category myself, but they have the potential to be much better tasting homegrown. I think they're worth a try to see if the difference is worth it to you!
Cool idea with watering the shade cloth
It really works well for us! Took it off yesterday after just 5 days =)

Would a thick layer of fall leaves work or would it be too risky with them blowing around and not being able to spot germination? Happy gardening!
@@marinarccisusm7116 In this case, I think fall leaves would be a mistake unfortunately. You don't want mulch really - they're not good at emerging through much of anything.
Definitely recommend something you can easily look and under and remove entirely when germination begins. Sorry =(
@@NextdoorHomestead thank you for the response! I’ll cut up some cardboard today 🙂
😂 my seeds were JUST WAITING for you!
Sorry for the wait! We've been SO BUSY these days. Hope it was helpful =)
I’ve never grown carrots but I sure would like to try. This video gave great information so I just might try it. We are on the cooler side this week in Northwest Indiana but we are going to get hit with 90’s next week. Thank you for this video. Very helpful
No problem! And I hope you give it a shot =)
Never hurts to experiment with some cheap seeds right?
Always like your videos. You always go in depth on information that a gardener would need. Very great interpretation. THANK YOU. ( Enid Phillips from Houston, Texas)
So sorry for the delay here - was quite I'll for a week! Thank you for watching and thanks for the kind words 😁
Hope you and the fam are okay, miss seeing your videos, but mostly just hope everything's well with you and yours.
Thank you for checking in! Genuinely appreciate it. Life and COVID have kept us... busy shall we say but I'll be back with more videos soon 😁
@@NextdoorHomestead Oh no, I hope everyone came through covid fine, and looking forward to seeing you back.
Thanks!
Excellent carrot video! I appreciate the heads up about faster germination in warm temperatures and slower germination in cooler temps. I experienced super fast germination back in July. I kept mine moist by spraying the surface every day with a spray bottle.
Thank you for watching and I'm glad to hear there was some helpful info in there for you. Spray bottle works beautiful 😁
Thanks for the video! Waiting for mine to be ready to harvest!
I hope you get an awesome harvest!
Thank you so much for this very informative video. You are really great at explaining how to sow carrots. :)
Well thank you very much for that! And I'm so glad to hear it was helpful, I've been thinking about making a video on this topic for a while!
I’ve tried growing carrots this spring but no matter what I do, the soil dries out too much in Utah since the air is so dry. I was watering them twice a day with a cloth over them and the soil was still getting dry. I am currently trying to germinate them indoors to transplant and don’t care if they look weird, as long as they will grow!
Southern Utah? If so, yeah that's a brutal climate! (and an AWESOME place)
Good luck with your new strategy =)

I've had bad luck with the wood, will def try the shade cloth! And I do the toilet paper deal with carrot seeds too, makes it much easier on me for planting since I have no raised beds.
Just thinned these out today! I hope your next round goes amazingly. I definitely prefer a lighter weight material.
Totally makes sense about the toilet paper. Cool to know so many folks have good luck with it.
What you really do need to....Carrot about! 1:32
How I wish that was an intentional pun. I would have said it twenty times in this video alone ;)

My tomatoes are still green (they didn’t get the message that I want I try a fall garden for the first time), so I planted carrots in between. Just checked on them and gave some water. I’ll have to up my watering game and make sure they stay moist.
Best of luck! If you do have to remove the toms while the carrots are growing, consider cutting them down at the soil line instead of ripping them out to protect the carrots
Why do you plant the seeds with 6 inches between the rows, when you space the seeds 1 inch between them
As a note for us old folks that can’t move around like you young people: Years ago I found taking wax paper and laying it on my kitchen counter then taking scott toilet paper misting it and putting the seeds on the toilet paper. I can space them properly then fold the toilet paper then mist again this prevents them from moving and if they do the furring strips, I place between the rows and leave until they sprout, keep them at least in a row in case of heavy rain.
That's a great trick and thank you for implying I can still move around ;)
@@NextdoorHomestead lol
Did you cover with any dirt or did you just place the toilet paper in the row and wait for the seeds to germinate. I love this idea! Thank you for sharing
I slightly cover it with soil. You can see the white in spots.
@@sherrifaye2492 thank you for replying
Can I plant the seeds into small pots in my mini greenhouse to begin with and then transplant to a larger area once the seedlings have grown?
It is possible! But generally carrots are just really tough to transplant without causing problems =(
Thank you
After I watched the video I think I know how I terminated my carrot seedlings a month ago,🤣🤣🤣 watering can was too strong and dug them out...😔
So easy to do! Best of luck with your next round 😁
My carrot seeds barely grew late last fall and overwintered. They grew really big in the spring/early summer unfortunately they went to seed and had no carrot only a root. Any idea what went wrong ?
Isn't 1 inch apart a little too crowded for them? Or is it with the intention of thinning out further and eating your thinnings?
There's certainly some debate, but no, I'm actually recommending a 1" spacing =)
Try experimenting a bit if that feels too crowded for you to start. And best of luck!
@@NextdoorHomestead Thank you for clarifying :) Luckily I've only sown half of the space so far, so I can try denser spacing for the other half and compare my results!
Between the rain and it being a cold summer my carrots are just sad and stubby😢
I hope they taste good at least!
