Figured I might as well drop a comment, if anybody's curious what Mike actually has on his pedalboard (sorry Mike, good job keeping it a mystery for a while though!). Not 100% sure on all of the routing, but I think this way makes the most sense. Mike uses a Palmer Triage amp switcher for signal routing. The first thing on his board is a Boss tuner pedal (either a TU-2 or TU-3, can't tell which), which runs into a Boss PS-6, and into the Triage. His signal is split to 3 different amps from there. Contrary to popular belief, the tuner is just a tuner, he's only using one output on it. I believe he uses the non-bypassed output, so he can still use it as a mute, but it'll mute EVERYTHING since the signal doesn't split from that pedal. The first output from the Triage is the "regular bass" chain. It goes into a Boss LS-2, then straight into his bass amp (I think he's using a Fender Bassman now? He had an Ampeg SVT at one point...). THIS is what he actually uses to switch the bass sound in and out. The second output goes to an Electro-Harmonix POG2, then into a Boss GE-7. All of the faders on the GE-7 are turned down nearly all the way, presumably for a "lo-fi guitar" sound (either that, or they're turned ALL the way down to completely mute one of the two guitar amps). From the GE-7, it goes into a second Boss PS-6, then into a Strymon Flint tremolo/reverb pedal. This chain goes to one of the Fender Supersonic guitar amps (he used to use Ampeg GVT's but switched after the GVT was discontinued). The third output goes to a second Electro-Harmonix POG2, into a Z.Vex Mastotron fuzz pedal. This goes into the other Fender Supersonic guitar amp. Both POG2's use pretty much identical settings. Detune all the way down, Low Pass Filter up pretty high, Attack turned down pretty low. All of the "Voice Mix" faders are turned down all the way except for the +1 Octave fader (which is pretty obvious, since he's using the POG2 for the "fake guitar" sound). I believe the first PS-6 (the one after the tuner) is set to an octave down, basically turning the "regular bass" into a "sub bass" and the "fake guitar" into a regular bass! The second PS-6 is probably set to a harmonized fifth interval, Mike seems to use something like that on a couple songs. Not sure what the exact settings on the Flint are, but the Reverb/Tremolo knobs are both at about 1 o'clock, and it looks like Mike uses the '70s reverb mode and the "61 harm" tremolo mode. The Decay knob is at about 11 o'clock. No clue on the Speed/Color knobs. The Mastotron is set to a relatively low volume, with the fuzz cranked way up (2 o'clock, maybe even a little more). The Tone and Relax/Push knobs are at about 3 o'clock, and the PW knob is at about 10 o'clock. Not sure what setting Mike uses on the "subs" switch. The Mastotron/Flint settings probably get tweaked from show to show anyway. For basses, Mike has 2 Gretsch Electromatic G2220 Junior Jets (one black, one sunburst), at least one of which is in Drop D tuning. The other may be a backup or tuned differently, not sure. He also has a black Fender Starcaster bass in Drop C tuning (the Gretsch's are short scale, so the lower tuning doesn't work as well on them).
One of the Gretsch basses is also tuned to drop C# for songs like loose change, out of the black (when played live) etc The basses are key though, the shorter necks, string guage, passive pickups etc to help with the tracking of the POGs (although they'd do a pretty good job anyway even when I drive my Fender's active circuit through it) There are also a couple of additional pedals off his board which sit on top of the guitar amps live. I'm presuming they're either noise suppressors or additional EQ pedals, but until we get a bird's eye view of the amp rig we may never know!
Jin Bae Or you could actually watch some Royal Blood live videos and see that everything Mike is playing matches up perfectly with the sound that you hear, making your stupid "LOLOL SECRET GUITAR PLAYER BACKSTAGE" idea (did you REALLY think you were the first one to come up with that one?) complete rubbish.
hmm..interesting, looks like you've done some homework. I may rag tag it together with what's laying around. I've got a short scale mustang bass that might be suitable for this.
Brilliant cover - loved it! I've done a demo of a 2 pedal and 2 amp setup for people wanting to get similar effects on a budget. Royal Blood Bass Effects with 2 Pedals and 2 Amps I've also linked to your video in the comments & description for people wanting to know how to get a more complete solution - hope you don't mind!
Totally cool with me dude. You've highlighted a good point in regards to the Micro Pog having the seperate outputs as well which gives much better connection options for those just looking to add to rig without as many pedals (because it is such a dance sometimes with mine!)
That was awesome!! I love the Little Monster cover as well!! I got to get buy this sweet set-up for sure!! Insperational stuff dude!! Keep them coming!!!
+Adam Flanagan I will thanks very much for post btw. Question, would you have any idea how to pull off Tim Commerfords tones from RATM?. His rig is a monster, and so are his tones. Frightening. I believe 98% of bass players have tried and failed to replicate. Thanks again. :)
Hi Adam, I've been wanting to do something like this on bass ever since I seen the band Local H. Then I ran across Royal Blood and had that a ha moment !! Great job !!
Very cool video. I just discovered these guys, don't remember how I stumbled onto them. I was trying to achieve something like this several years ago. I pre-ordered the Fishman Vission when it came out and put it to use in my three piece band. I was only using it when the guitar player would take his solo, to creat a rhythm guitar underneath it. Worked out ok. The pedal did not track the greatest in my opinion. As usual the demo videos leading up to it, made it cooler than what it really was. Then again, the guys playing in the videos were much better players then I was. In any case, I sold it after some time. Now, discovering Royal Blood, I am wishing I would not have. The guy uses the same bass as I do, as well.
I just saw this a little late but anyway awesome sound. Just made a video doing the same song but the other way around with a guitar doing the bass and some vocals. Well. Cheers mate! See you around
Wow, geeat work!!! Thanks for sharing this, it's awesome imho. The rig is not for everyone though. A POG2 is € 525 where I live, the LS2 and big muff average €80 a pop, the deluxe jb sells for €2150 and you'd expect to shell out another say €2500 for two decent amps(bass and guitar each). The grand total is: 5860!! !! Nothing for the weak hearted hard accounting not exactly overpayed average bassist like me.I've seen a video titled 'how to sound like ...'. The 2 blokes there suggest using a pitchfork, I tried and was deeply unconvinced. Just does not cut the mustard, buzzed like hell, tracked poorly (admittedly not on the best off basses: an active inexpensive japanese workhorse) and thinned the crap out if my signal.i'm sure you folx have any other idea to cut corners on costs but not on soud, anyone?
Sup, Any bass would do the trick, but the bassist of Royal Blood uses a cheap Gretsch bass, probably under 300€ new. Pogs are expensive, but they are by far the best polyphonic octavers out there. Litterally no latency and a great sound. A Micro Pog or Nano Pog might do the trick, they are cheaper and they even have separated outputs for dry and effected, so if you don't want EVERY possible sound, you might skip the LS2 with these... But you won't have octave up only, unless you add a tuner with mute function AFTER the dry out of the Micro pog... Throw in one distortion for the effected output (octave up) and a bass fuzz (Bass Big Muff are excellent and affordable, with plenty of low end) after the dry outputs, and you're good to go :) So, where I live : Nano Pog (210€) + Guitar distortion, say 50€ top, + Bass Big Muff (80€) + any tuner with mute, say 50€, + Gretsch Bass (300€), you're in for less than 700€. But you already have a bass, and you can get used pedals for cheap.. :) Cheers
Also, check out the TC Electronics Sub 'n' Up, which seems comparable to the POGs in terms of quality of sound, way cheaper (120€), but without the separate Dry and Effects outputs, you'll have to figure some basic routing.
There's a rough write-up of what's doing what for this song in the description but yeah there's certainly a few other pedals that weren't used! I'll see what the demand's like and will do when I get some time. Thanks for watching!
awesome! beyond producing songs in this website, did you perform too with public in some occasions? it can be fun for you taping a collab-song beside fellow youtubers you might toy with Band-hub to record it
Very nice cover man ! ;-) Cool. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :-) Like probably a lot of people, i'm trying to find a 'similar' sound like Mike. You've done a really good job with that. Your explanation above looks very interesting, but it sound a bit 'chinese' for me :-) Could you post a kind of drawing or some kind of picture where i can see the exact connections of the pedals etc ? Do i really need 2 pog2's ? They're a bit expensive... ;-) What's essential (what do i really really need) to come close to his (your) sound ? grtz B
I am thinking of using this song as one of my solo performance pieces for my BTEC music course at college is there any chance you could send me the drum track as an MP3 file so that i can use it as a backing track, haven't been able to find one as of yet
Great job, just one possibly famous question; how did you get that "clean" distorted sound? Only by plugging it into a guitar amp and turning on the overdrive? Please, explain! Thanks!
so my Boss tu-3 should alway's start out first in line on my pedal board. All I got so far now is the Sansamp bass driver so i'm going Thnderbird bass guitar-sansamp bass driver-acoustic mini stack 100watt amp. So if I get the Boss tu-3 i'll be going Thunderbird-TU-3-Sansamp-Acoustic mini stack.....correct? Sorry i'm a better player then I am setting up lol. I went with the Thunderbird because Jare from KOL uses one and I love it!!!!!
Tuners should generally go first anyway to get the best readings but of course the Boss tuner has its advantages in regards to the RB sound so yeah run it this way
ok dude yea it's running like a cham so now I got 2 pedals my amp and my bass eletric and bass acoustic. So now its gonna b pedal city from here on out!! Can you do another R.B cover like Figure It Out?//
Fair game dude. I may do, the problem I've got is finding time to record new songs as I'm busy with teaching and gigs. Got some ideas for videos anyway but we'll see
Hell yea dude, if your busy doing all that keep doing what your doing man sounds like you got it goin on. I was just putting in a request for if you do another Royal Blood one day. Keep up the work! Pedal Out~
Your sound is just great Man, very good cover ! I've checked already your blog where you explain how you arrange pedals to get fake guitar sound and bass sound. Just one question please : Do you have 2 outputs with 2 amps or just one ? I've understood the bass guitar output is the sansamp, and the guitar sound is on the LS2 B loop, but where do you get back the LS2 output ? Thx a lot
Hey ya, thanks for checking out the video! Yeah it appears I missed that one sentence out so I'll update those blogs and stuff, apologies! Basically nothing runs back into the LS-2, so all its doing is working as an additional signal path which is activated when the pedal is pressed. What happens instead is the output of the NS-2 is going straight into whatever the guitar amp would be, which in the case of the video, the output is running straight into my interface and into a channel on logic which has a clean Orange amp emulator on it (one of the presets in Logic Pro X's Amp Modeller plug-in). When I've been using this live, it's been going into a Fender Mustang I one (the cheap little modelling amps they do) which has a similar patch on it like Logic. Still working on the live sound but its definitely working for beefing the sound of the whole band. I'll probably do a run down of pedalboard soon enough, but I shall also be putting up another Royal Blood cover soon enough as well!
I think now that there's plenty of videos online showing this that it's right to say its D standard/C# standard etc Its all down to setup really and drop D is easier to avoid changing guages, resetting up the bass etc Its quite cool that the majority of their songs work in whatever setup/tuning mind.
True say Adam! It is alot easier to play in D standard (I do it in C# tho cause its easier to sing live) but it is easier (tuning wise) to just do drop D and it sounds fine. I'm just talking about what Mike uses
A fair bit, bearing in mind it's a combination of bass and guitar effects over the years, but if you want just the basics I reckon could be done on a couple of hundred, maybe a micro POG which would save money getting a pog2 and something to line split the signal to guitar and bass amps.
Total noob here... Wondering if someone can give me a 'basic' rundown of what's used, how to do it and an estimate price? Doesn't have to be top end stuff, just something to get started with. Love the video dude, sounds incredible.
TumbleJamie What I did too get this sound (with just a regular guitar) is - 1) Get two cheap amps - one guitar one bass 2) Get a Cheap USB audio interface with atleast 2 line outs and a line in.. Assuming you have a PC of some sort. 3) Plug your two amps into the line outs on your interface, and your guitar into the line in 4) Get reaper (Free DAW) and route the one signal from your Guitar to the two separate outputs (amps) 5 - NOTE : This is where it comes down too taste!.. And gets a bit digital - ) Find a good bass sound with some twang on your physical bass amp. Then, on your reaper channel that routes out to the bass amp, find some plugins to add that Lower the pitch an octave, add compression, and add a Bass to your output. For this I used Amplitube for COMP, and wavves maxxbass + Stomp 6 for the Bassier signal + Pitch down. In total this should be about 200-300 (assuming you already have a PC and Guitar) and you get a killer sound (i'd argue that depending on how you configure all the plugins - you can get an even fuller sound than Royal Blood! Even with just a strat).. Step 5 can surely raise (or potentially lower) the $$ significantly depending on what software you use and how you get it (pirated or purchased) Hope this helps :)
Hey dude! Great video, just a quick question about your pedal setup, i see you use your tuner as a killswitch to kill the bass signal to get the guitar sound on its own, but how do you kill all the signal to tune in between songs? Do you use 2 tuners or change the settings on the line selector if that's possible?
hey guys i have an idea u know u can put the all riffs that is in hes video and usb it into hes computer special for it i can make it for u drums please like rock band 2016 for me ill do anything for that .
+Eduardo Sanchez De La Torre You can, although the tracking won't be as bang on. Any of the recent EHX pitch shifter pedals will do the trick perfectly.
+Denis Medvedev Pretty much just octave +1 similar to what a pitch shifter can do. The trick is to have a great amp sim after the pitch shift to emulate the overdriven sound. Try adding a distortion or fuzz after the pitch shifter and see if that gets better results. Hope that helps
On my board the 2nd one is for the bass signal (I use it for sub octaves/chorus sounds etc) but if you can get a 2nd guitar amp/amp sim then you could plug it into the LS-2 as well on a seperate output and make stereo guitars (like they do in RH)
+Denis Medvedev One of the things to note, in order to truly get that Royal Blood sound, it also has A LOT to do with the LP Filter on the POG2. Not just the 1+ octave step up. Great demo +Adam Flanagan. I can't really tell, but something else to take note to, is the fact that his bass signal is split 3 ways. Two signals use the POG2, and I'm sure he EQ's each guitar amp slightly different for mix reasons. The bass signal goes straight to his amp. Just like Adam here, he uses a BOSS line selector to turn bass on and off, in combination with a tuner to turn either bass or guitar off. He essentially treats his setup like 3 band members. 2 guitars and 1 bass. He often uses 1 guitar signal to start the song, and kicks the second guitar amp on and his bass. Giving it that 4 piece sound.
hey great but i think you missed a note(not just once that would be super assholwy) out near the(3:45) end i think you need to play on to the 6th frett as well
Nah, don't believe ya! :p May have mixed up the D notes (open drop 4th string) and the D on the 3rd string but for one take I'm not too worried. The bend at the end is wrong as well but again not going to lose any sleep on this! Thanks for watching!
One could only imagine how Mike Kerr plays this and sings, all the while switching various pedals on and off! Pure genius and awesome riff.

One of the Gretsch basses is also tuned to drop C# for songs like loose change, out of the black (when played live) etc
The basses are key though, the shorter necks, string guage, passive pickups etc to help with the tracking of the POGs (although they'd do a pretty good job anyway even when I drive my Fender's active circuit through it)
There are also a couple of additional pedals off his board which sit on top of the guitar amps live. I'm presuming they're either noise suppressors or additional EQ pedals, but until we get a bird's eye view of the amp rig we may never know!
or he just has a secret guitar player backstage

spot on cover Adam....great job!!!!
You got that tone down, sick!
See, you Royal Blood covers video tutorials with guitars' people? That's how it should be done!
Module79L ?
Module79L why does your grammar just suck absolute ass?
Damn dude!!! Awesome setup and killer sound!! Ty for the breakdown of everything
That was class man. Well done.
Dude! This is such an awesome cover!!!!
Very creative sound you are getting just with bass.
Dude..You killed that! Nice work
That was awesome, nice pedal setup. Love the sound.
Great job! Lots of coordination needed. Mike plays this in standard D tuning rather than drop D.
nice sound. love this band!
Brilliant cover - loved it!
I've done a demo of a 2 pedal and 2 amp setup for people wanting to get similar effects on a budget.

That was awesome!! I love the Little Monster cover as well!! I got to get buy this sweet set-up for sure!! Insperational stuff dude!! Keep them coming!!!
I think you've done an awesome job finding that sound. I love that sound. Good job! and good playing!
awsome....makes me wanna get a bass
Awesome cover man!!!You did exactly how RB does.Nice sound!!!
O_O ... I NEED this setup! This is amazing. Thanks for the research !!
Awesome. Very well done. Great sound.

Definitely worth a go, its great fun!
Dude. Awesome. Been thinking HTF does he get that sound!
Thank you so much!!!
You need to make a video explaining and demoing this gear!
Good job. Nice gear and bass btw.
that was sickkk. 2 pog2's holy balls!
good video thanks for showing close up of effects going to try and get similar sounds using big muff metal muff and ibanez tube screamer sans-amp etc
+Richard Lunn Cheers dude, hope you got close to the tone in mind!

That was great!
Does it work with finger bass playing too?
Oh my God! Perfect! =D
kickass !

nice job man!
Nailed it
Great!
Who's watching this in 2024?
Fair play to you

You should've ended the song on the 12th fret sliding down, Adam. They do this on the Album and it sounds a little better in my opinion ;-P
Nevermind, one note, and its still a D either way! :-D
Adam Flanagan haha yeah, I'm just nitpicking. It's a great cover man! :-D
Tobias Christensen lol no worries & thanks dude, all in the name of fun & games. Have a great weekend! :-D
+Adam Flanagan you too! :-)
Hey man, nice cover.. Was just wondering about the possibility of maybe acquiring those drum maps? We've got something in mind.
I love that it says "Jazz Bass" xD
I'm freaking out...
Alejandro Martín photo
I'm pretty sure he uses a zvex fuzz factory a lot for the tones you hear. I have one built into my guitar. Same as Matt Bellamy from Muse
I used a EH Big Muff Pi for this but would love a fuzz factory. Mike from the band uses a ZVex Mastotron.
10/10 top kek
I am thinking of using this song as one of my solo performance pieces for my BTEC music course at college is there any chance you could send me the drum track as an MP3 file so that i can use it as a backing track, haven't been able to find one as of yet
they should sell this pad all in one ser for $1000 dollars on amazon i would so fucking buy it lols nice band.
Hey I love royal blood and me and my band cover them but I'm a new bassit and I was just wondering would this song bee obtainable as a total newbie

Pedal Out~
Cheers dude :-)
Excellent, but one question the POG is set up an octave up or down? sorry ai´m new to this pedal world :)
And I think the basses he use with single coil pick ups help to achieve that sound too
Your sound is just great Man, very good cover !
I'll probably do a run down of pedalboard soon enough, but I shall also be putting up another Royal Blood cover soon enough as well!
what a feeling boy... xd
Boss!
Bad ass!
I can play it now at last ! 😀
perfect
So if I understand this correctly the LS-2 is here if you want to mute the "guitar" and have only your dry sound ?
Out of the Black is preformed by Bass
Everyone says he plays it in Drop D but really he plays it in D Standard and sometimes in C# Standard (BBC video)
Fucking gold man, keep it up
Adam Flanagan Hey, this is something I've really wanted to get into for quite a while, if you don't mind me asking, how much would this setup cost?
A fair bit, bearing in mind it's a combination of bass and guitar effects over the years, but if you want just the basics I reckon could be done on a couple of hundred, maybe a micro POG which would save money getting a pog2 and something to line split the signal to guitar and bass amps.
Great job! Sounds sweet! How did you get the drum track? Thx !
so fucking awesome
Total noob here... Wondering if someone can give me a 'basic' rundown of what's used, how to do it and an estimate price? Doesn't have to be top end stuff, just something to get started with. Love the video dude, sounds incredible.
Will do a rundown soon enough, gonna cover a few more songs using different parts of the board and then rundown should be soon after that!
Adam Flanagan That would be so awesome of you!
Thanks for replying! Can't wait to see the rundown video
TumbleJamie What I did too get this sound (with just a regular guitar) is -
1) Get two cheap amps - one guitar one bass
2) Get a Cheap USB audio interface with atleast 2 line outs and a line in.. Assuming you have a PC of some sort.
3) Plug your two amps into the line outs on your interface, and your guitar into the line in
4) Get reaper (Free DAW) and route the one signal from your Guitar to the two separate outputs (amps)
5 - NOTE : This is where it comes down too taste!..
Step 5 can surely raise (or potentially lower) the $$ significantly depending on what software you use and how you get it (pirated or purchased)
Hope this helps :)
Thanks a lot man! Really appreciate it, gonna try this next time I get paid :)
Hi!
You re awesome! How much did you pay for that?
Great job ! Can you give us the tabs please ?
+Chrissy Bliss I don't have a tab; I just learnt it by ear. I'm sure there's plenty about online.
whammy pedal can be use it if i dont have a POG2?
+Eduardo Sanchez De La Torre You can, although the tracking won't be as bang on. Any of the recent EHX pitch shifter pedals will do the trick perfectly.
What software did you use for drums?
How do you play
What kind of overdrive pedal are you using?
Very cool stuff! I tried to re-create your sound with Bias FX Desktop plugin, but it's not exactly the same sound. What is your POG2 settings?
+Denis Medvedev Pretty much just octave +1 similar to what a pitch shifter can do. The trick is to have a great amp sim after the pitch shift to emulate the overdriven sound. Try adding a distortion or fuzz after the pitch shifter and see if that gets better results. Hope that helps
+Adam Flanagan What about a second POG2? Is it in the bass chain? What us a settings and a communication of the second one?
Giving it that 4 piece sound.
is this in drop D
Yes
Is this standard tuning?
How did you get the drums?
Programmed them myself using the drum patches that come standard in Logic Pro X
hey great but i think you missed a note(not just once that would be super assholwy) out near the(3:45) end i think you need to play on to the 6th frett as well
Nah, don't believe ya! :p May have mixed up the D notes (open drop 4th string) and the D on the 3rd string but for one take I'm not too worried. The bend at the end is wrong as well but again not going to lose any sleep on this! Thanks for watching!
oh well at least you can take constructive criticism
