The pride of the Philippines. My dad used to rave about this guy a lot when I was a kid. My piano teacher thought he was the greatest jazz pianist. He was introduced at a show once as the number 3 ranked jazz pianist in the world. Bobby being Bobby interjected and corrected the host saying,.." excuse me, number one ☝🏼." 😄This guy was a class act. Truly the BEST
He is the Manny Pacquiao of Piano. When I was in high school me and my two band mates wondered into the club in the city during the week (Manhattan). We were in our teens. Bobby was playing. Not many people in the club. My keyboard player literally had tears coming out of his eyes watching this guy play. It was just him. He was playing all standards. Just killing it. Back in the eighties. You wont get lucky like that today.
All these Cats are top shelf but Bobby takes the cake. When you hear a musician of this caliber it's just breathtaking. Richie nicked named Bobby the Wildman for a reason. There you have it ! Love all his music !
He was a self taught pianist. He started as a percussionist so that explains his attack on the keys. Saw him at the Manila cafe in NYC back in 1988. Legendary Bobby Enriquez.
I caught Bobby Enriquez, here & Richie Cole & Co. jamming in 1980 at the ''Marrakesh Jazz club in Waikiki & at 315 AM & They were still on 'Fire!...... Late May 1980 'a few moons ago'
As a musician of over 50 yrs. all over the us, still one of my fav vids. Anyone that took sax from PHIL WOODS, etc., and can get BOBBY AS BACK UP on keys has lived the dream.
Bobby's loud, raucous, exhibitionistic playing literally using hand chops and elbow jabs was both fun and impressive. But the lyrical side that I didn't think he had I heard and saw when with the late Ely Sayson we dropped by the Calesa Bar in Hyatt Manila on the night of his wife's birthday. He played a short but beautiful melody he had composed especially for her, and I and the audience were completely blown away!!
guy is fantastic. never seen such a unique talent in my lifetime with his superb control of the keyboards using fingers elbows fists etc. he is a hallo of famer.
Yeah, the tune still works with this rhythm. Way back in the sixties . . . my hands used to get tired playing this rhythm for any length of time. But no problem listening :-)
Randy Weston smiling somewhere 'cause so firing , joy and beauty the Madness hi flyed his very special composition! So proud to listen to jazz at this level!
Bobby Enriquez is truly a Hall of Famer in Jazz. There's another Super talented Filipino Jazz keyboardist who's based in the US right now. His name is ROLAND "BOY" KATINDIG. I think Boy K is probably the last of the great Filipino keys player still active right now. Better enjoy his music while his still around making great jazz music.
Wow! Hard to believe It's been 2 yrs. I got a chance to jam w/a study of Oscar Peterson , and Jamey Aebersold, who was friends with James Moody and Chic Corea!
@@iahna8855 oh nice, it’s crazy how this family is spread out all over the world and I’m constantly finding new relatives because of this man haha. If you have an Instagram, mine is isaacezekielmusic if you’d like to DM me - would be interested in learning about your side of the fam as mine is located in NJ/NYC area!
I had this taped off of A&E in 1984...I also have the record, but "Hi Fly" Is not available there-in fact it's all screwed up order wise-the first cut is "Punishment Blues" for example...I also have the DVD release, but it omits stuff like "Alto Acres".("Yardbird Suite" is thankfully included) Neither release has "Island Breeze"...
Some excellent cooks can't read a recipe. Playing music and listening are integral. Bobby knew where the notes were located on the piano and the notes don't move when your fingers reach for them.

Sad! There are few Filipino Jazz Musicians nowadays.
Mainstream Music is more predominant here. Only few have an acquired taste in Jazz.

from what I understand, he did not learn to read music, and didn't have a piano at his home!
